Very Nice M535i

Post by rodpaine »

This M535i, sold by Bahman Cars in Europe is a very nice example, as the pictures show.

Ah, yes.......I've had copies of those pics saved in my "great cars" file for quite a while. Not only a great M535i example car, but a great example of good photography from a seller.

:alright:

Yes, I always suggest to people who are photographing their car to visit this site for good consistant examples. Only thing I wish they would do is use a fill flash for the engine bay shots and quit putting that shiney stuff on the water hoses.

everything looks good on that car ... but once I see those stupid small tires on the front ... makes my eyes hurt ... and putting that shitty shiny staff on top of the engines makes them turn yellow later -shame

What are those high pressure hoses (two of them) on the driver's side of the engine bay? The two that seem to go into the lower radiator area? Are those lines for an oil cooler? Never seen those before.

Yes.

Notice it is a green motor in this unit and no a/c?

I noticed the no AC but educate me as to how you spied the difference between the green and dirty motor. Thank you.

I can one-up Rich slightly on the engine specs. It's not only the green motor, it's the green motor with EGR. 060 ECU I think, which is moderately rare. The e28 only came equipped that way for the few countries that required it.

The exhaust manifold is clearly different and it has a pipe leading from the exhaust manifold to the top of the front of the air box.

I thought the 060 ECU was for a high comp B34 with a cat and EGR. ~210 BHP, IIRC.

Looking good! But I would adjust the exhaust to be in the middle of the rear bumper and put that lid of the front tow eye in its place before taking pictures.

Damn, did I get it backwards? EGR was an emissions option on the dirty motor? Somebody help me out here.

060 was in the dirty 10:1 218 HP engine.

NOx reducer for the dirty motor in certain markets I guess. 060 is specifically for the EGR cars, 061 is the typical dirty motor ECU.

So is this a "dirty" or "clean" motor? TIA.

And it's not academic for me. I will be over there in a few weeks and if the car is still for sale it might be "on my way" for a daytrip of some sort.

The listing clearly states it has been sold. It also would not have made sense, at least financially, to import this M535i to the United States now.

I understand. However, it seems it is often the case that companies that have these cars -- places like Enthusiast Auto and Hatch & Sons -- have a "line" on additional examples. Moreover, under NHTSA regulations and EPA regulations importing these cars is now fairly straightforward because many of them meet the age cut offs (21 years for EPA, 25 years for NHTSA, both are, I believe from manufacture date).

See Section 3.1 of the attached PDF for a summary of EPA requirements: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/imports/documents/420b11015.pdf

Also see Box 1 of the NHTSA declaration form: http://stnw.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/hs799short.pdf

I contacted staff at EPA and NHTSA to confirm my reading of these provisions is correct. I wanted people to have the benefit of this information in case they wanted it, especially if people here in the US are willing to pay $18k for a beautiful Euro look-a-like car. This obviously does not address shipping costs or the duty fee, but when I checked about having a much newer car imported a few years ago, those fees were not the issue. The issues were EPA and NHTSA. HTH.

Yes, I am extremely familiar with the importation guidelines under DOT, EPA, NHTSA, and all of the FMVSS. In addition to my previous post, I also want to point out to that no M535i ever left the factory in this exact configuration-- the car's history is questionable. This M535i would not make sense to import and you are fortunate that it has sold and are not the owner.

Trust me that I would never buy a car like this without contacting you!

The other thing is that because I first owned an E28 in 1990, it doesn't dawn on me immediately that these cars are now old enough that alot of the rules that used to apply are no longer relevant. Maybe you know but the exercise was good for me. Thank you again.

I would be delighted to help you. I keep close tabs on every M car including this familiar one which I wished you were the owner of before it was flipped: http://www.shiftbespokeautomotive.com/w ... a/3164541/

Feel free to send me a message anytime you have a question.
