AC on, but hot air also
Hi,
Just recharged my AC. It blows cold air. Not mind blowing cold. But it'll do.
Notice though after a while driving that there is hot air down by my feet (drivers side) and maybe the window vents on top of the dash. Just seems like a wall of heat above the dash. Maybe from the black dash getting hot in sun, or the roof since it's black paint...
Or from the engine. One of my vent covers inside the engine compartment is gone... (those to baked rubber flap cover things on the underside of the hood close to the window) maybe it's heat sneaking it from engine.
Is there a switch in the engine compartment for the AC or something? Any ideas? Thanks.

Those "vent covers" are insulators, not flow blockers. Additionally, the A/C is recirculate-only, so their condition is irrelevant.
If your car is pre-mid-'85 build, you need to manually close the fresh air flap (center slider all the way to the left). After that date, the flap automatically closes if the servo is working properly.
You need to pull the under-dash cover and look to see if the clutch supply & pressure holes in the firewall are sealed. Note I didn't say "if you have a manual transmission" -- the holes are there either way.

interesting
cool. thanks.
thought the center slider was supposed to be all the way on. will check that and the firewall seals.

Re: interesting
Nope. If you do that, you're mixing outside hot air with the cooled air.smokey+ wrote:thought the center slider was supposed to be all the way on.
rats
tried it with middle slider turned off. still getting heat on left foot. have to look.
put all sliders to left and there's a lot of hot air coming up from the window defogger vents.
hmmm. is there a switch in the engine compartment that makes the heat stay on. i had no heater core for a while. maybe i forgot to switch something back.

Re: rats
Is that a statement or a question? You used a period.smokey+ wrote:hmmm. is there a switch in the engine compartment that makes the heat stay on.
Assuming it's a question, there is no "switch," but the heater control valve is in the engine compartment.
footwell
hi,
yes, i feel heat on my gas pedal foot. also can feel heat with my hand seeping from dash vents by front windshield.
going to try heater valve to see if that does anything.
seems like there's a lot of heat caused by the engine. curious if others have run into issues like this.
thanx.

While there are insulators up there, there are seals on the edge also. Some people have had missing or dislodged steering shaft boots. 20+ year old flap seals don't work well either, so some air getting by is to be expected. You may also have a heater valve that isn't shutting off as I once did. A new one, or kit at least, Bosch even. So you may have more than one problem.
