A little screwing around today.......................
Put 200 miles on the engine today. Have verified that I can only run to 8 psi of boost with the waste gate in the non modified condition. Thats just fine for engine break-in. Noise is still present, have determined that it is in the head and not in the bottom end.
I did do some Autobahn time today. Had a Mercedes 200 CDI thinking he was fast and I got a little carried away in the joy of dropping him. I hit 150 mph (indicated) before I came to my senses and slowed down. Holly shit, 150 easy on 8 psi. Just wait until I raise it to 20 psi. Will be in the states though..I'm going to jail for sure.
20psi? That's a whole lot of power for the flexy e28 chassis...Ever think of installing a roll bar/cage or foaming the frame rails to increase rigidity?
Nope...................give away the sleeper status and I would hit my head on it getting in.
Tell about the "foaming" of the frame rails.

There is a special foam you can use to fill the frame rails and makes the chassis A LOT stiffer. I recall a Sport Compact Car issue where they tried this on an import (Sentra SE-R maybe?) and said it increased rigidity almost as much a roll cage would have.
Only downside to this foam is, if it isn't injected properly, it can trap water and cause the frame rails to rust.
I dont recall the name of the product...

What's wrong with 150 indicated ? If the brakes and susension are up to it, why not?
I've had my M5 at 140 before. The unrestricted zones of autobahn are so nice and wide.. if you know the car is setup well why not ?
At those speeds you might want to make sure you've got good aero on the car... the E28 is pretty brick shaped and i suspect the front end gets light at that speed.

Matt,
The Euro M535i and M5 have the engine underscreen which helps to significantly reduce front end lift. Before my Euro M5 engine broke, I drove it to speeds above 145 mph on several occassions and it was rock solid stable, even with the small Euro M5 front spoiler and no rear spoiler.
Ethan Turner who Euro'd bumpered/spoilered his US M5 found the same thing when he installed the engine underscreen.

Nothing. I have no problem with that speed. I did not want to be doing that while breaking in the engine. As Rich said, my car is very stable at that speed and above. The M-Tech kit does wonders.
Raj, I will look into this foam in the ststes. I don't notice a lot of body twist though. I have not tracked the car though, lots of straight Autobahn shots.

Duke,
IMHO, you won't be able to hit 20psi consistently with a stock head gasket, even with the head studs. It may hold short term, but not long term. It may be 500m or 5k miles, it will blow with 20psi. Ask Todd! I'd set the EBC to 15psi for most driving duty, then bump up to higher boost for dyno pulls other limited time events(scarrying the crap out of friends).
Great to hear the system is well, look forward to seeing it one day.
