Is that a little rust at the hood gasket, near the left edge of the picture?

Looks like a leaf...but likely rust.

I have seen this car, and if anyone is interested, I can look at it again for all of the details, but I decided to pass on it. The biggest negatives are (1) the front spoiler, which is badly cracked and needs to be replaced, (2) the rear bumper which has a 6-inch corrosion bubble on the aluminum under the black coating, and (3)several large (up to 1-inch) chips on the RF door that go down to bare metal. (4) The wear on the driver's seat is awfully heavy for a car that is supposed to have 51k miles. (5) The exhaust system is shot and will need replacing. The good things: It is pretty much rust free despite having spent most of its life in IL and IN, and if there is any paintwork, it is on the RR QP and done so well that I cannot tell for sure. There are a couple of medium scratches that will remain visible even with thorough detailing, and the hood was too dusty to check carefully for paintwork. The brown spot on top of the QP pictured above is of a leaf, not rust. The motor sounds like it should, but I didn't drive the car since I had lost interest at that point. With at least $3k worth of work, the car could be a 'very good' driver, but probably not more than that. Again, I can get to the car easily and provide a more detailed description for anyone who is interested. I gather from my conversation with the dealer that some other local people have looked at it, but they won't be back. --- Art

When I got my 535is with 66k miles the driver's seat had some scuff marks on the left bolster. When I got my 535i with 132k miles the driver's seat was pretty much shot.

It does seem that the car has well over 50k miles. I'd go on condition rather than odometer reading. Maybe a Carfax would help determine consistent mileage readings. Looks like the previous owner may have left a broken odometer unrepaired for an extended period of time...

The history and mileage of this car is accurate. The car's multiple-owner history and environmental factors due to ownership in Illinois, Indiana and Delaware likely explain the current condition. Potential buyers should pay attention to the installation of the audio system. Overall it appears to be a good example of the model.

Having driven in the NE for years, I agree that the exterior will age faster than else where, except the Chicago area. The roads/potholes are brutal - all considerations when buying one of these. 2x the mileage elsewhere may yield a better looking (exterior) example. And the driver's seat bolster is always an indicator of who the car taker was. $12.5k plus paintwork...

Has anybody actually test driven this M5, or plans on driving it anytime soon?

This car (VIN: WBSDC9308J2791899) has been re-listed and is now better represented on eBay by a different seller.

Leonard,
You're slipping, a yellow expansion tank is a deal breaker.
Better info, but still nothing about the cars maintenance and modifications history, which is certainly more important then the generic info in the eBay ad, IMO.
On a related note, I was sent this '88 M5
movie by a friend, which cracked me up with its 'little rock chip in the fog light' and 'one tiny little rip' in the drivers seat.

I began reading through this thread before realizing it's an old one. Then I viewed the video and saw what you're talking about.
At about the 1:07 mark for future viewers. Turn up the volume.

That guy reviewed an E24 at one point, and IMO, seems like a retard. I hope it's not anybody here, but I would not want to buy a car fromt his guy...

That guy is a cross between Mr. Rogers and Rainman.
A very worthwhile bump.
