Since a couple of people have asked about it

So, as it turns out, wifey asked the right question in the shower, so I had to fess up. She took it well, so I (and you) can post whatever you want.

About the finger- I was helping my dad hoist his skidloader engine after I got it running properly for him. He was using a backhoe to move the motor and we had a chain around the 400 odd pound beast. I said up slowly, he cracked the valve, and the damn thing leapt 4 feet in the air and came back down with the nose of the crank in the air. Unfortunately, my right index finger found it's way in between the chain and the falling engine's crank pulley. It sheared off roughly 3/8" of the tip of my finger (about half the bone of the first joint.) This was August 8th and my finger will be bandaged for a couple more months at least. Should be OK, just a bit shorter (and no nail.)

Don't understand the initial edits and such, though.

Ouch.

I had a finger get between a VW bus transaxle reduction gear unit and a folded over pipe one time many years ago that hurt enough it had me hyperventilating, but as much as that hurt it pales in comparison.

Dang, I'm sorry to hear of your injury -- it's been close for me a few times!

Now, here are a couple of stories from co-workers that might make you cringe and/or think how "lucky" you got off:

1) I noticed one of the guys I worked around (but not with) was missing half of his left (?) index finger. One day when we were talking about cars, he related how this happened. He was helping a friend change a cam in a Mopar, down in the basement of a 3-floor townhome. The friend had to take his young (sick) child upstairs to do diapers/medicine/feeding, etc., and in the meantime my co-worker kept working on the car. Somehow, as he was installing the timing chain, he hit the bump starter, pulling his finger into the cam sprocket/chain. He yelled for his friend for help, but he was two floors away and it was 30+ minutes until his friend made it back down to the garage. Even without the delay, that section of his finger would have been unsavable.

2) I'd never noticed that a gal I worked around was missing her left index finger, but she was joking around with guy #1 and said how she had him beat because she was stumpier! She was on a treadmill and the belt was going sideways, so she tried to bump it with her hand, and guess what -- yep, it got pulled into the slot at the front. She panicked and yanked, pulling her index finger right off! She now can't drink alcohol because her phantom index finger itches like crazy!

Of course, there's the story about the hiker who had to cut off his arm when it was stuck under the boulder...

I have to invent a plausable story for my missing right moob. Breast cancer just isnt macho enough.
Ted shot down my idea that it was chewed off in a bar fight.
So I'm gonna go with that it was bitten off by a shark when I rescued a drowning baby.
Years ago, my buddy Jeff showed up minus his chestnut ponytail . Braided it fell just shy of his belt. Seems it got wrapped up in his 10" table saw and was pulling him in when he just managed to hit the switch.
I have a school chum, that every time I see him ,he is missing another part. It started shortly after graduation with a his left leg below the knee. He was helping a lady change a tire on the roadside and a drunk rammed his truck .

Are you kidding? Rod Roddy was clearly macho enough (you have to be epically macho to go out wearing suits like this every day). :D

No inventing is necessary.

That is unfortunate, what happened to your finger. I think about losing a digit everyday, as I am a carpenter and work with power tools. A worker for a competitior of mine was using a chop (miter) saw just last week to cut a long board, and the board "jumped" in the saw (probably not using sawhorse on "floppy" end), and as he pushed the board back down to finish the cut, he took three fingers off with it on a diagonal. Just like that, these things can happen so fast.

Be careful out there.

jeez man, it made me cringe just reading this. I'm really sorry to hear that, I'm glad it wasn't worse than it was though. :(

Youch! That hurts just reading about it! How long ago did it happen? And your wife is just now getting around to asking "the right question"? Don't wanna know about the shower bit; TMI.

I've got my own story... Broke my ankle a few years back rescuing orphans from a burning building. Not just any building, mind you; a sweat shop factory where they were no better than slaves. Yup. Broke the ol' ankle helping those poor unfortunates.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. ;)

Being a Special Ed. Teacher, I just want to know if you are having any problems with counting?

Happened on August 8th. I have a plastic guard that I wear over the tip to prevent further injury, so it was difficult for her to spot (I did guard it from her carefully.) Unfortunately, I left said guard at work one weekend and she became suspicious when we were out to dinner with some friends of ours and one of them said "jeebus, did you lose the whole first joint of your finger? It looks really short." Still took her 2 weeks to ask about it.

I can count just fine. All the way to 9.789535613.

lol. Your little finger is like a ti.

Sorry. I've read this thread for every reply, but that just popped into my head.

I'll have to tell wifey that one. Whenever I park ththe 325ti in a tiny spot I always say something like "bless this stubby little car."

So instead of ti being trunk impaired, my finger is tip impaired?

I wonder when the "phantom" itch will begin. It usually manifests itself where ever the missing piece was most familiar with. I'm no M.D. but is your nose itching?

Ouch, that does sound painful.

All these stories about missing digits reminds me of a landlord I rented a building from years ago. He had an auto repair business and had an old codger pull up one day and wanted him to check his brakes. He said the wheel had a pretty good open slot in it and he stuck his finger up inside there too feel how much pad he had left. Well the old guy drove off and left the guys finger laying there on the road. He went into the hospital and they had to page a doctor in, the doc had been out golfing and reeked of alcohol so the guy refused him and they had to get yet another doctor. He has his finger sewn back on but it is crooked as hell now. He took the old guy to court and won, but never did find out what the hell he was thinking when he drove off...

My dad got the tip of his index finger cut clean off in our table saw when I was about four. I got a nice long vocabulary lesson that morning.

A coworker of mine decided his finger needed to check what was going on between his motorcycle's chain and sproket, that was good for half of a finger.

And since he hasn't put his x-ray pics up yet, I'll volunteer one of my CAT scans, which may explain why I'm such a happy guy.
