I love the 524td don't get me wrong!

I just wanted something exceptional, thats why I'm building a 540d.

Engine is the 245HP 4.0 V8 bi-turbo 32V engine out of a '99 740d

Project is far from ready, I'll keep posting progress on the board.

Wow.

I'm jealous. I'd really like to get my hands on an M51 or M57.

Where in Netherland do you live? I should be studying in Utrecht, come spring. I'd love to see that thing! I bet it'll drive like a beast!

I'm using the original 5 speed automatic with step up/down shifting.

This engine puts out 413 ft·lb....so to keep the transmission in one piece I figured I was better of with the stock auto which by the way really makes this engine a pleasure to drive.

As far as for the electronics I'm using all of the original 740d ECU's and will wire it into the E28 (I'm into electronics so it's not a big deal)

Hope my monster will drive in the end of August.

As for specs, the 740d does 0 to 60 in 7,8 sec @ 4400 LB weight, so dropping about 1000 LB by putting that engine in an E28 body, one should think that acceleration would be about 6 sec's ?

Top speed in the 7 series was 242 KM/H (150Mph) so I think with my nice square rigged boxy E28 I still should hit 165 Mph somewhere....

I'll keep you updated!

That is a fantastic and very creative project, :alright:

The torque from that thing's going to be able to pull the world out of orbit..

Kijk eens!!!

i always wanted one of those engines and a 6 speed to back it up, maybe find someone to cook up some performance engine software and see what those vg turbos can handle :D

with chip tuning that should be in the 300bhp mark...possibly over 500lb-ft torque???

that should be enough to change the world alittle

Why would you even consider buying the engine from Finland when you can get a whole car with less money. With 2 mins of searching I found 2 cars from Sweden under 10000eur. First: 740da -00 w. Navi, beige leather interior... ~7500eur. Second: 740da -00 w.beige leather interior, navi, tv, heated seats (front and back), electrically adjusted seats w. memory, xenon-headlights... ~9800eur.

Even if you took the engine and gearbox with wiring harnesses etc, there would still be a lot of parts to sell (and get back some cash).
