can a Triflo exhaust be cut up and have 3" pipping adapted to it? to make it more clear, i have a natutally asperated 535iS that has a Triflo exhaust on it. when it comes time for the turbo build and exhaust replacement, can i just have my Triflo cut up at the muffler and adapt 3" pipping to it? if you're asking why would i do this, it's because i like the sound of the Triflo very much and did not want to loose that oh soo sweet rumble. is what i'm asking ok? does it make any sense? am i crazy? what can you suggest. i'm confused so please help me out. thanks.

What are the inlet sizes of the tri-flow?

I am guessing the Triflow is dual inlet and dual outlet. What are the inlet and outlet diameters? Check to make sure the cross sectional area of the Triflow is not actually greater than that of one 3" pipe. If thats the case, you could just run a 3" downpipe and branch that into a dual outlet that mates up to your existing triflow exhaust and don'e modify it at all. You do realize that the turbo will drastically change the exhaust note. My 3" Magnaflow is actually very quiet by "turbo car standards". It's much quieter than my previous 2.5" magnaflow NA exhaust.

I got a 3" pipe with no cat running into a euro m535i muffler. The diameter for the dual input pipes to the muffler is around 49 mm, and I love the sound. I’ll have the car up in the air this weekend fighting with the rear sub-frame mounts; I’ll take some pics and show you how the exhaust shop did it.

Thats correct, I just have no idea what diameter the Triflow pipes are for comparison.

Nothing, but I don't really think even a fairly powerful turbo m30 needs much more than dual 2.25" exhaust or a single 3" exhaust. While I have no way to quantify it, the increase in diamter will reduce the overall velocity of the exhaust flow but I don't think it will in any way hurt performance. Backpressure is a much bigger problem remedied by a larger, more free flowing exhaust.

The turbo will take care of that. Do it right and run 3". Sell the tri flow complete, don't cut it up.

It will totally change the sound. My 3" turbo back Magnaflow setup is a LOT quieter than my 2.5" NA Magnaflow exhaust.

Triflo makes all kinds of mufflers. I wouldn't hack it. You're better off selling it ( or not even buying the system) and if you insist on using a triflo muffler, then you can order from them a proper sized muffler with a single 3" inlet ( I believe with whatever outlet you like)

I'm a BIG fan of the Magnaflow muffler. It doesnt get much better than that.

I too am a believer in Magnaflow products. They sound very nice, are quality and are reasonably priced for what you get.

Chim, I too have considered what you are questioning. My idea would be to not hack up the tri-flow & have a pro-shop custom make a y-pipe that would bolt up directly in front of the tri-flow. So much for my 1-off idea! This should provide for a unique setup & exhaust tone also.

So you broke the bank for a turbo kit & are keeping the e28?

nah, the bank is still intact. my question was for a future possible e28 turbo car, a different car though. my car is still for sale. i was just asking if it was possible to do this with the triflo. if it would've been possible, i would've tried to negotiate a better price for my car without the exhaust. thanks for your help guys. one more question though, what about a dual 3" exhaust for a turbo car?

Absoulte overkill on a turbo e28. Maybe for a 1000+hp drag supra.

Modifying the Tri-Flo makes no sense. You will destroy the system and it will never be optimal. It works great on NA cars, leave it for the non-turbo guys. Get a single 3" system for a turbo car and you will be fine....

do your cars use the expansion fittings with the metal ring things betwwen two expanded ends? Im trying to find a muffler shop to make me an adapter that will bolt on to my tri-flo from a single 3in. pipe. They have been nothing but trouble and nobody will even look at my setup around here......i hate SD.

Is there any place on line i can order a y pipe that is only split a few inches? Im really having trouble with the exhaust, its the one thing holding me back.

BTW, i think my pipes are 2in stock.

I hate that it's this way but finding a shop to do anything unusual is tough. Finding one to do what you want is even tougher. Try to find a local Hot Rod shop and see if they do this stuff or find out where they get it done. My .02
