Forthcoming Coonass project involving the ingredients listed above...
That's all I can say about that...lets just say I have accumulated 1/3 of the equation so far....
See Sia! Yet another Euro 525i E28 in North America...and this one has 70k miles! And a blown engine...
Flame on....

Sounds like a neat project Kyle. Keep us posted on your progress.
As they always say; there is no substitute for cubic inches.

Make that an LS9 and it'll be interesting. :-) Kyle, if you want contact info for a friend of mine who is most of the way through putting a Chebbie motor into an E34, PM me.

good luck with the project. I know when it is done it will be one hell of a ride.
my buddy and I recently finnished his project of putting an LS1 into a 1985 toyota celica (last year of RWD). It has the full t56 six speed. He just recently got it tuned and dynoed and put to the wheels 343HP and 357TQ. needless to say it gets up and goes.

Kyle, if'n you want me to fab the motor /tranny mounts and exhaust just let me know. It looks like I'll finally have a place to do that stuff. I promise it'll be very inexpensive. Just like to do it. Oil pan could be fabbed as well as I have the sources available to me (sheet metal shop, machine shop) for anything custom that might be needed. Will discuss later if you want.

Well, I dunno if Gary wants his e-mail/phone # plastered up on the web. He's putting an LS1 (I think) into an E34, using an E39 6-cyl. subframe since it clears the oil pan on the proper side and allows him to use the R&P steering, custom mounts, etc. Last I heard he has the motor in but hasn't finished with wiring it up, but he should be able to answer a lot of questions (assuming the E28 and E34 are similar enough up front).

I wasn't asking you to give us his phone number/email. I know that'd piss me off. (don't get any ideas Kyle)
Thanks for the more complete description of the project. The R&P conversion is another great idea. Definitely give us an update if he's successful with this project.

That's interesting...do you know if he had to modify the e39 subframe to make it fit? I wonder what further mods would be required to use it in an e28 (just wondering, not that I'm gonna run out and do it.)

Offhand, no. I can find out. I'll see what details I can dig up.

Actually, there is a guy who has done this, and I need to contact him. I may just do what he has done and put it in my 635csi...hmmmm....

I assume you put this thread in this forum because you plan to turbo/supercharge the thing when you're done, right?

Let me rephrase "runs"...
The engine isn't totally blown up...I think.

So, there are two lightweight 525i Euro cars here in the US? I thought the al525i car was the only one. What's the story on this? Pictures?

Oh, they aren't all lightweight? I sincerely doubt that BMW made two versions of the 525i in Europe, light and heavy. I think its lightweight because it has ZERO power options and less sound deadening and insulation...
Correct me if I am wrong...

Well, when I was reading about the one al525i had, he was discussing the lack of undercoating and zero sound deadening and insulation. Of course, his was a BMW test mule for different drivetrains, so it might be a bit different.

Does it need to be sunroof deleted to qualify as a lightweight ? I think Vance has one of these Euro's cars also. I know it's all manual ,single side mirror and I think no sunroof.

Al's car had a moonroof, so who knows? Of course, what I was reading was the word of a person trying to sell a car, not a BMW edict.
I'm still interested in seeing this car, though.

So, went back and read some messages from my friend's E34/LS1 swap.
I'm using an LS1 from a 2002 Camaro along with its 6 speed Tremec T-56 transmission. I bought it with the engine harness and controller, plus the Camaro instrument cluster, radiator, condenser and fans. There is a ton of
wiring in an E34 and a lot of interconnectivity between the sub-systems: check control, general module, climate control, light control and stuff. Plus my car started out as an automatic. I have a lot of figuring out to do and a lot of wiring to lose. I expect to dump the check control and OBC but
have a car PC with some interesting stuff hooked up to it.
I figure on using the BMW climate control system, then having the A/C "on" signal connect to the GM engine controller which handles the compressor control and cooling fans.
The GM controller will handle the Camaro instrument cluster. There are a few other details to work out. I think I've already noted previously that I'm using an E39 front subframe with rack and pinion steering and "pull-rod"
longitudinal thrust control.
Then add a pair of turbos with low boost, ported heads and a decent cam. Sort of duplicate what BMW is doing with the 335i but with 600 hp, maybe more.
I expect to have a nice 600 hp, 3400 lb 4 door sedan with A/C, power windows and a few additional accessories. A comfortable car but not necessarily one with the latest doo-dads. I'm looking for 25+ mpg highway and high teens in
stop and go traffic. ....
The front crossmember and rear steering of an E34 conspire to make the engine very difficult to fit, therefore I have added the complication of an E39 front subframe and suspension to my project. ... [T]his past weekend I finally got the E39 subframe all set with a mock-up assembly
to prove the Chevy engine mounts and E34 adapor plates fit. First thing in the morning I'm off to the welder to get all the aloonyum welded up.
Meanwhile am pulling the wire harness out to get the engine compartment painted before cold weather hits. Yow! E34 wiring is complicated compared to my Vega! Will use GM control for A/C and cooling fans integrated with the BMW wiring. BMW wiring for lights, windows, mirrors, etc. Will
eliminate the gay stuff like heated windshield washer nozzles (dumping the windshield washers completely), OBC and check control. Also pulling the ABS for now, may remount in the trunk at some future date. Airbag is also gone.
So that's a smattering from a few different messages over the past year. Basic view of the setup.

Wonder if Cindy would notice if her LS1 missing? hmmm...
Seriously the Z moves like a scalded cat... in a straight line at least. Feels like a bloated cow compared to the 5er in a turn. How much weight would that add up front? And what would that cost in fun?
Good luck Kyle (and BTW I want a ride) if this goes forward.

I think he has the project on hold, he actually has got the car running and driving. I don't think he has the heart to tear it apart.
