Hey,

Not being the most computer savvy person around I am always looking for helpful Computer hints/tricks
and an employee was watching me type in a web address and taught me that you can just type in the name such as

"mye28"
and then hit contol then enter and it will fill in the rest of the web adress for you.... http://www.mye28.com

I thought that was pretty cool.....anyone else got a couple easy "tricks" to share......

I know this works for Windows but I don't know about other OS's...

Here are a couple:

- F11= "full screen" view in web browser.

- Highlight text with the cursor and then "Ctrl" c to copy or "Ctrl" x to cut and then "Ctrl" v to paste.

there are a ton of them, but the one i probably use the most is 'alt+tab' to switch between windows or applications you have open.

If you have multiple applications open at one time, hit alt-tab to quickly toggle between them.

To exit from Internet Explorer, hit control-W.

When you log in to mye28.com (or any other forum), you don't have to use the mouse to move from the 'sign in' blank to the 'password' blank to the check box that keeps you logged in - use the tab button instead, and when you reach the check box hit the space bar to make the check.

Kill your mouse:

Ctrl + A to select all.
Ctrl + C to copy.
Ctrl + X to cut.
Ctrl + V to paste.
Alt + Printscreen to take a complete screenshot.
Printscreen to take a shot of the foreground window or dialogue box.
Alt + Tab to switch to last opened window *OR* hold down Alt and keep hitting Tab and you can cycle through all open windows.
Tab to swtich between all fields on the open window that can be manipulated.
Alt + F4 to close the open window, or from the desktop, bring up the shutdown menu on your PC.

You can find some really cool stuff for Windows XP here.

They're free and add some neat features. My favorites are the "Alt-Tab Replacement" and the expanded calculator. Multiple Desktops are cool too, but I don't use them. What's cool about the Alt-Tab toy is that instead of just showing you an icon, it shows you an image of the screen - really useful if you have several IE windows open.

Doesn't work pre-Winblows XP

Ctrl+L highlights the address bar (in firefox anyway) so that you can change it easily. Firefox is full of awesome shortcuts and customizations if you like that kind of thing.

I think this has worked since at least IE4... and probably every other web browser past that time. You have to do CTRL+Enter--- not CTRL, then Enter.

Say you have selected an Icon on your Windows desktop. If you click your right mouse button (or left one if you have changed it to left handed) you get a menu.

Loose that mouse! Shift-F10 does the same thing. (That one is one most computer geeks don't know)

Why shift F10? who knows.

Opera browser lets you enlarge text size on the page you're looking at by hitting the "+" key.

Also has copy to note as a choice on the right click menu. Handy for datamining archived board info on a given topic.

That reminds me, what was that recipe for Jamaican Wash I found . . .

On the flip side, here are a couple of things that get up my nose:

Windows seems to have an uncanny knack for placing its cursor in the way of whatever you're trying to read.

Word seems designed to wreck your formatting any time you use delete or backspace.

When selecting stuff to copy/move in Word or Excel, the cursor movement speed goes into totally useless hyperdrive mode when you hit the edge of the screen.

If anyone has fixes for these, I'd love to hear about them.
