being an engineering student myself, I am intrigued as to how one becomes a director of engineering. What kind of schooling/experience do you have, and do you have any words of wisdom for an aspiring automotive engineer?

Good luck with the new job! I'd stick my chest out all day with a title like that. ;)

Rex,

Congrats on your new position.

Get your MBA, preferably paid for by your employer. In the modern corporate world, just about everybody with director in their title is watching financials vs doing any engineering work. In many cases becoming the Director of Engineering is nothing more than being a bean counter with an engineering degree.

Another thing that seems to be common these days is changing titles. My old position / title at a large corporation that manufactures medical imaging equipment was Area Service Manager. Basically I managed a $12M P&L with 20 Field Engineers as direct reports. Shortly after I left the company my old position was renamed. It became Director of Service, same job, same responsibilities, just a different title.

Just my $.02.
