Silver's Neomax N for E28

Maybe it's just me, but this does bother me a lot. The E28 is not the most common enthusiast's car, I know, but also far from rare. I don't understand why budget coilover options are so limited.
BC Racing - used to be my go-to, when they were 800EUR. Now they are 1200-1300 for a taiwan made budget coilover.
HnR - good quality but not even adjustable, for 1300-1400EUR is crazy amount of money
K-Sport - essentially BC racing/D2 racing with TÜV for 1500EUR.
And MTS, which may be the best bang for buck but check this out.

https://mtstechnik.com/de/products/gewi ... 40724.html
https://mtstechnik.com/de/products/gewi ... 45902.html

26% more for what?

Also no ST coilover or anything. Raab (kw v3) is like 2500-300 euros.
TLDR Barely anyone makes reasonable priced coilovers with reasonable performance for these cars. I am debating of modyfind true coilover E46 units to fit mine as I need to weld anyway, might as well same 400-500 euros for the same performance

Or what are your experiences? Is there a hidden gem waiting for me around the 1000EUR mark?

I've seen people in Europe using GAZ coil overs, but don't know how pricing or quality compares to others.  It appears they're had a sale that just ended today.  https://gazcoilovers.com/bmw-e28-gaz-co ... 1504-p.asp

The aftermarket for these cars dried up 20 years ago. Anything new is definitely small batch production with associated additional costs.

I am now debating getting E46 coilovers. Easy to adapt (relative, for me it is) as the car has a similar weight and distribution, and similar damper motion ratios. There are much more options and all I need to do is get a new rear spring, a spring collar and redrill the top mount

You could try Lowtec (Germany) - they have listings for e28 and ship to Hungary.
We're running Lowtec springs and shocks on the e34 and at some point plan to go to coilovers (down the road)

i had a set on an e30 years ago. worst suspension ever. the equivalent of riding on a pogo stick, no matter how much i fiddled with the dampening control.

Has anyone used the MTS/MTech coilover set up?

I see they're offered in "street" and "stance" versions. Stance appears to have slightly higher spring rates. Also offered in gold or silver (silver higher $) versions, but cant tell what's different between them.  Also, they're offered for front axle  "Suspension strut diameter" of either 52 mm or 55mm. Does e28 strut diameter vary by model years?

Here are the gold vrs silver street set for 52mm strut dia...

Silver is inox as stated on the website, which means they are made from stainless steel. The gold ones are yellow zinc plated carbon-steel.

Regarding the front strut, I'm not sure. Maybe this is an ABS or No-ABS thing.
On the E34, I am 100% there were two designs for shocks, which also changed the top mounts, for example, so it's definitely possible.

I am looking hard for the best value in a coilover kit for my '83 533i.  This thread got me interested in the MTS offerings for the E28.  Last night, I measured the strut housing on my car.  I believe them to be original to the car, which has a born-on-date of February 1983.  The struts measure 52.0x mm.  My car does not have ABS.  I have a spare set of strut housings for an ABS car and they too measure 52.0x mm. Just thought I'd add a data-point to the mystery 55mm E28 struts.

@szacsi72 - Have you made any decisions about your coilover kit?

Cheers,
Z

I have a set of these on my 997.2 and they aren’t bad, the ride quality isn’t terrible at all. You can call them and change springs to swift springs, have them adjust the damping range and adjust the spring rates to suit your driving style.

Not bad, but these not available in EU as I see. Well, I tried to search on their website and only get options from E34 up:

Regarding the Silver's try this link: https://silvers-suspension.shop/catalog ... /?q=SB1037

Yesterday, I was all set to pull the trigger on the MTS kit, but then I was rudely reminded of the @#$% tariffs that our illustrious, grand "tax & spend" leader has ruined global trade with, which makes the MTS kit not the value leader it was (in my mind, anyway).   As far as I can tell, no one keeps the E28 MTS kit in stock in the USA, so all orders are drop-shipped from Poland, thus exposing it to the !#$% tariff costs. 🤬

MTS is overpriced anyway. A couple years ago they used to go for 550-600 euros, now they are 900+.

But thanks for the link for the Silvers!! Shipping is only 25eur and no extra tax. This really makes me think about it. Do you happen to know the difference between neomax vs neomax-S? Apart from the level of adjusting and the shock oil?

Silver's Neomax N for E28

@tuxkilla

Thanks for your help. I pulled the trigger on a set of Silver's Neomax N. I will turn this thread into a Silver's Neomax info thread for others to see.

I ordered from the website provided Zeuropa, and paid 1100~ EUR with shipping to Hungary. It is just a bit cheaper than BC
I went with 6k front, 6.5k rear.

I believe the 7k/6k they offer normally is not a good bias. A lot of people assume the motion ratio is 1:1 front and rear which is not true. The front is ~0.98-0.99, the rear is 0.93. That is because the strut mount is more inboard than the rim. If you look at it from the side, yes, the align - but the semi trailing arm angle is 15deg --> The distance between the axle of rotation and the strut mount, vs the center of the wheel is NOT the same.
Since wheel rate is motion ratio ^2, wheel rate in the rear is 0.85*spring rate.
This would give me
68N/mm front, 50N/mm rear --> Huge oversteer bias, my car is only 53%FR

I went with the lowest difference, to give me flat ride:
6k/6.5k resulting in 57N/mm front, 54N/mm rear, natural freq. of 2.11Hz front, 2.19Hz rear, just enough for flat-ride.

I am currently runnig 18/13mm original "small bars" (pre-84).
If it's too oversteery, I plan to upgrade to bigger front sway bars, it should help with turn-in too. 19, 20, 22, 23, 25mm bars are readily available and I can even modfiy a stock bar to be "shorter" = stiffer.

I will update the thread the minute I get my hands on the set (they state shipped in <2 weeks)

Update!
I almost forgot.
I talked to them before and they gave me the damper dyno results, super nice. This is what made my buy them. They are not the best but are pretty good for their price point, digressive! I calculated the damper forces with my preferred damping ratios and everything is perfectly within rules of thumb

Thats awesome! I was able to do the same thing on the 997.2, I was able to get dyno sheets and specify spring rates. Hopefully you find them firm but compliant.

Thanks
Rob

I installed KW coilovers and have been very happy with the results. Have them on full soft, and it's pretty perfect. Handles much better, planted but isn't too rough or bouncy for city drives. But do with their were better options for these cars. Saw some 997.2 references. I chose Nitron R3's with front lift kit for the 997.2 RS. They are fantastic

Hello all,

I have some updates for you.
It took 6 weeks to get the coiloers which is, a lot, since I live in EU and they ship from EU. They stated 2 weeks.
Anyway, I recieved them!

Quality looks superb! Much better than BC/D2 and similar taiwanese coilovers in this price category.

I got the -N, which is the street version. It has a rubber top hat. I like it - it's a street car. It's still much stiffer than the original and should help with road comfort. If you want to track the car, get the -S version at least.
One thing I really dislike tho, is that the top hats are not adjustable at all. At least its a simple construction, so I have already designed a custom offset plate. On my car 1mm offset =~ 0.1 degree camber. The maximum offset I can do it 15mm, and I currently have 0.6. So, I will go with the maximum amount to move me to 2.1 degrees. If anyone decided to get these silvers coilovers and wants some camber, let me know, I can help.

I welded the front struts 10mm from the casting. You don't need to guess anything, the sway bar end link mount is pre-welded, so I just put the Neomax next to the original struts and went from there.
Compared to my previous rideheight, I can go -20mm (which is... low.. the car would hit the ground and -40mm...) all the way up to +80mm, which is close to OEM+ territory. If you want them really high, you can weld them higher, of course. But the range is really nice. The threaded body is 175mm, I left 50mm from the original strut, and would not want less than 50mm sticking out --> 75mm of adjustment.

The rear has 90mm travel, which is 100mm of wheel travel (MR = 0.9).
I preloaded the springs 20mm. This gave me 30mm droop travel, 33%. I would not go with less, the bump stop is 25mm and I don't want to ride on them all the time.

In the front, you have a bit more, 115mm travel. MR = 1. I did 15mm preload, to give me 40mm droop. That's 35%. The bump stop, is the same, 25mm. I left a bit more droop due to the added travel up front.

Please, never do the often recommended "tighten only that the spring stays in place" method; always dial in your damper height!

the 24 clicks is a wide range, you can really feel the difference. 0 is quite soft, at 24, it's hard to push the car with my hands.
Can't wait to test them on the road.

Thanks for the update and sharing your setup.  Your camber plates look very nice - way better than the options I've seen on the market.  I look forward to seeing some pics on the car and your experience driving these Silvers once you have them dialed in.

Cheers
