Some 1600s & 2002s had a bulging heater hose - don't know the purpose.

Maybe they act as expansion joints? Similar to boiler joints, but made of rubber.

Isn't it near/next to where one of the hose support brackets go? Might be to minimize movement of the hose with pressure surges in the coolant system. OK, I'm reaching here, but that's all I've got.
