O2 mileage counter clicking under dash behind kick panel

I've got a 1986 staock automatic 528e.

There has been a clicking from behind the kick panel for some time now.  clearly a mileage counter as it clicks slow when driving slowly and speeds up with car speed.  I was under the impression that it was the O2 sensor mileage counter and the pushing the reset button on the black box under the kick panel would reset it and make the clicking stop.  There are no O2 sensor lights on the overhead display, which works, or on the dash. I pushed the white reset button, and it clicked but when I drive it still makes "counter" clicking sound.  I feel the clicking coming from the cylinder-shaped part to the right of the reset button.   Any ideas what's happening here and how to make the thing stop clicking?  Picture below for reference.

My car does not have the O2 light, but I hear a very light clicking from the instrument cluster that is def coming from the (functioning) odometer. Most noticeable when it's cold outside. I assumed its mostly normal.

You can make it stop clicking by unplugging it. 🙂

yeah, I ended up just unplugging it.  Got another unit from the junkyard.  But my understanding is that it doesn't do anything other than to trigger the O2 sensor light on the overhead display at a certain mileage count.  so i may not even replace it.
