Hey y’all - I’m James.

Been looking at E28s for over a decade and finally pulled the trigger. Picked up an 88 M5 project that needs a lot more than TLC.

Already benefitting from the community here and very grateful for your collective contributions.

When I figure out image sharing, I’ll post some pics.

Welcome to the group!

Posting pictures is easy, but they have to be hosted elsewhere. Here's a write up on it. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=147488

Thank you and thanks for this. Clearly I completely skipped over that part of FAQ in the forum guide.

Mike is good for that. Probably has a doc he just pastes when he posts that.

That car looks to be black paint dipped with the bumper covers and bumpers appearing to be painted.

Looks very nice but you say needs lots more than TLC, gonna fill us in?

A place with a pile of dead links and a pile of good links to projects as well as the Electrical Troubleshooting Manuals, middle of the left column: www.e38.org/e28 if you need info on some projects that aren't here on my. And then Rod's pages here on my, lots of good projects.

Welcome.

Gonna drift this thing?

Pretty sure I’d crash the servers by the sheer amount of text required to document everything. /S

The car arrived the day before I was headed out of town so I’m still working through a full assessment.

A few things off the top:
  • Alternator and battery need to be replaced
  • Electrical system needs a once over, I suspect some fuses/fuse box may be problematic
  • Proper repaint to address some minor corrosion, dents and just age
  • Brake system needs to be overhauled and at a minimum, rear driver’s side caliper needs to be rebuilt
  • Interior is a bit of a mess — cracked dash (of course), missing door handles, driver’s side rear window is stuck open, glovebox hinge is broken, etc.
  • Front windshield needs to be replaced
Those resources are amazing! Going to be super helpful. This will be my first restoration, the scope of which is likely an exercise in stupidity and a sign of significant hubris on my part. And, who knows? I’ll either figure things out or give up in a fit of humbling rage and pay to finish what I can’t.

Drifting? Nah but I have already purchased a Fast and Furious wrap to demonstrate to the world the speed contained within.

Congrats and welcome. My son and I are on a “lil more than TLC” run for the last 2 years on our M5 project (there’s a thread over on the m5 section). Have fun with it and take lots of pictures. They will help you and others.

Fun fact, our car came from Houston(by way of Greenwich CT). We might have some Texas state flag roundel decals if you’re interested :D

Thanks for the welcome and love your thread! Great inspiration and I may have a question or two for you.

If you do have a Texas roundel to spare, I'd certainly be interested.

Hey, remember me? How’s the project M5 going? Did you get the windshield installed?

In honor of Jim's memory
those decals deserve to live on.
