Inexpensive Idle Control Valves

Post by krazydog27262 »

Have any of you replaced your ICV on a M30 with one of those inexpensive ones listed on ebay and other sites? Thanks!

They work but don't have long lifespans. Do yourself a favor and buy a known good used original or pop for a new unit. Going new is pricey but probably the last one you'd need.

In sping 2019 I purchased and installed an ICV manufactured by Löwe Automobil, p/n 53509. Back then I've paid 60 Euro + freight.
It is a quality copy of the original Bosch unit:

I have been using it for 15k+ miles and it (still) works perfect.

Don't judge a book by its cover.

When I had my M30B35 swap done (at a fairly reputable shop) one thing that was left by the wayside was the idle.  It was a constant rev up/fall, rev up/fall from 1000 to 1500rpm.  It was frankly an embarrassment to drive around like that.  So, I did the following:

- Replaced the ICV with a Bosch unit bought used from Ebay - "known good"... wonder known good "to whom" cuz it wasn't good at all
- Replaced it with the same Löwe Automobil, $65 ("OEM replacement) ICV that @RobertRO mentioned.  It looked solid, except neither box or part had a "Made in_____" identifier.  You know anyone making things "in Germany" likes to make it known things are "made in Germany", or in Eastern Europe, or in Turkey... who knows where it's made.   The Löwe part didn't work either.
- Decided to roll the dice on a $35 Ebay part from a brand called ISUMO.  My logic was, "let's see if it works, it's just $35".  $35 part  has worked flawlessly for 2 years now.

As of today, the only "OEM" part carried by reputable parts sellers (Turner, ECS Tuning, Pelican Parts) is is by someone called "HAMBURG TECHNIC" and it is approx. $150 - I haven't tried that one yet.

I had some spare time today, and I tried revisiting the issue:  I put the used Bosch part again and the Löwe Automobil part again, "just in case".  The moment I installed them, the idle started being rough and volatile and as embarrassing as I remembered it to be way back when.  Took those out and went back to the $35 Ebay ISUMO part, and the idle stabilized at a solid 1000rpm as if I commanded it to stay there.  Not an ideal 700rpm, but not jumping around either.

Either I got really really lucky, or it's been a sobering day of reckoning about "cheap Chinese parts from Ebay".  Guess sometimes they just work as they should... Knocking on wood like crazy as I type these lines

If anyone has tried the Hamburg Technic part and it stabilizes at a solid 600-700rpm come what it may, I'd very interested in one.  Please share your experiences, thanks.
