MY E28 KEY GOT LOCKED IN TRUNK

Hi there Guys,

Im in a dillema and i'd like to pick your brains in regards to the situation.....

I was doing some work on the e28 today and had my trunk open for access to the tool kit, I finished the work and locked up the tool kit and closed the trunk. My keys happen to be in the trunk, my only set of keys actually.... Luckily my doors were unlocked. I tried everything and no luck. As we all know, removal of the seats brings no access to the trunk.

Anyway, here's my idea..... The glove box lock. Can anyone confirm with me if the key to the glove box would open up the trunk? I read somewhere it does. I'd just like to confirm that. If that's the case, I can bring the glove box lock to a lock smith and they can replicate a key from that and I can use that key to open the trunk and retrieve my master key. Fucked situation

Let me know. Open to suggestions. Thank you for your time.

Get your friendly local BMW dealer to go into the BMW database and get the key code for your VIN. The lock shop can use the code to cut a new key for you.

I have 2 other ways, but one requires sacrifice of a tail light, and the other drilling a small hole in the body just above the lock. The drill technique is easier and far less destructive.

Yeah, so my local BMW Dealer doesn't have the code to cut the key in their database which is strange. I tried looking for the code in my cars handbook but no luck.

Looks like I'm going to go the drilling route. If you have a link to a tutorial on that, feel free to drop it. I'll be looking for one my self

Thanks !

If your going to drill a hole, why not drill a hole with a hole saw, big enough for your arm in the thin metal behind the rear seats. It would be a lot less ugly. And you just paint it to prevent rust and call it a day

Maybe find a locksmith that is willing to pick a wafer lock?
Or maybe do it yourself:

I must be missing something, but how do you lock an E28 boot (trunk) without the key?

I don't know how it happened to the OP, but I have experienced it myself. The keyway is straight but the locking mechanism rests between positions and, when you close the lid, the bits shift to the locked position and activate the central locking.

I think you might be able to use a keyless entry to send a pulse signal to the central lock control unit behind the passenger front speaker...

Yes, but it got locked in the boot!

Question: whats a keyless entry?

PS: Are we still up for a beer Federico?

Well, my brother and his wife moved to London this year, so there's a real chance of me visiting the UK after this covid mess is over

Something like this wired into the locking unit: https://www.amazon.com/Docooler-Central ... 4644&psc=1

I don't think adding a keyless entry system is necessary, as you could simply sit inside the car with the doors closed and do the same by moving the front locks up or down.

I'm guessing the OP already did this but the trunk lock somehow was put in the bypass/valet position so you need a master key.

To add to that if it's not clear, you can in essence disable the central locking action on the trunk by using the key and rotating it past normal position. Once done only the master key can rotate it back into normal position where central locking locks and unlocks the trunk.

Consider it like the double lock mechanism on the DD that disables ability to unlock the car from pass side or trunk.

This is a link to a technique to open a locked e28 trunk. I have used it 5 times, back when you could still find intact e28's in salvage yards. I used it once on my own e28 many years ago while we were on a trip and my daughter locked the only key we had with us in the trunk. I used a drill bollowed from the motel's maintenance man.

The drill diameter is not critical; just stiff enough to press the latch. I usually used a 1/8 as smaller ones are usually too short, but a long 1/16 would likely work.

These locked trunk threads typically gather a few wild ass ideas that no one seems to have actually used. Anone actually used a hole saw to cout an arm sized hole behind their rear seat?

BTW, I can also pop open an e28 hood with no access to the car interior in 10 seconds without leaving a mark on the car.😊

Did you try getting in the car, locking the driver's door, then unlocking it? Or is your trunk lock set to stay locked when you unlock the car?

Actually I cut a leg-sized holed, only because I locked my shoes back there by accident.

As per Instagram, the OP used a hole saw and got his keys. Now he has a bass port
