Kind of a weird situation here, I bought a beater euro 535i in non-running ("needs a fuel pump and a battery") condition, in proxy last night. I asked for a picture of the title signed over to my name, which I received. The odometer of the car is broken at 86k. The title, however, is partially filled out and lists the "actual" mileage at 159260. Does this sound like a gauge cluster swap, odometer rollback? He insists that 86k is the actual mileage, and I guess will be sending me some pictures to verify that today, whatever that might entail.

I'm not too concerned at any rate, but if it's registered properly and service records indicate that it's indeed a sub 100k car I would consider restoring it as opposed to using it as parts for my other car. If so, I'm not sure how I'm going to handle that when I go to register it. Thoughts?

unfortunately without some sort of records its a complete guess when you're dealing with old cars and broken odometers. The one in my Continental was dead when I got it, the digital display said "ERROR". I fixed it and found it had near 190k. The car doesn't look like its got that much mileage and the date stickers on the cluster didn't make me suspect it was changed but I really don't know. The title says 190k because I had to put something on there.

I ended up calling a dealer with the VIN to get a little more information on the car, and I found that the car was originally Cosmosblau with a blue interior. The car I purchased was Diamondschwarz as noted on the shock tower, with a black/tan interior. So the history on it is pretty sketchy and given the condition I think it will definitely be a parts car. But such is life when you buy a $500 car to fix your $1200 car...
