Hey all, I'm coming over from the Volvo 240 side of things and I am looking to get an E28, I'm looking for a platform to do some fun cruising around but also driving some of the local mountain driving as well as maybe some future autocross stuff, I'm located in Denver and my budget is in the 2,000-3,900$ price range and I am potentially willing to travel to neighboring states, please let me know what you may have or if anyone finds anything let me know!

That's the one I'm leaning towards, anythoughts from some one besides me if we think the interior would clean nicely? Also any big concerns I should have looking at a 533?

Take a look at this: http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=39840

The ad says 138,xxx miles. If that's true, that would be good (note the word "if"). If he's just flipping it, how does he know? If the odo isn't working, it's anyones guess.

Paint: is that primer on the drivers side? Why?

IIRC, you can't chip most, if not all, 533i (chip was soldered, as I recall - someone call me out if I'm wrong). If this is something that you'd want to do, find a later 535i.

Go drive it, it's in your price range. The pics don't really show much, frankly. And hook up with FirstFiver, he has a car in TX, a 535i that was going to be his daily driver.. I've seen it, it's okay.

Paint from the driver side is supposedly from damage the PO attempted to fix, upon further request for pictures they were still spotty and hard to tell much about the car so I'm thinking i will pass on that one, However i got an email from someone replying to my ad about a 87 528e that they want to let go of for 2,000, car is said to have an lsd with 190k on it, no rust, clean interior, and everything works, just needs some paint (Maaco FTW) never the less i think that might be what I go for, being the ETA i am a little sad but I'm sure that the car will still be a fun canyon cruiser or a fun car to take out to cars and coffee and some other group drives! maybe a chip or something to help with performance! im going to take a look at the car on tuesday so i will keep you guys up to date!!

I'm still looking guys! I drove down to New Mexico to check a car out but that was a bust, we stayed the night in durnango and checked out a 86 528e while we were there that was also a no go, so I'm still looking if anyone has any other leads or sees anything...

Seems like a good starting point and close to your budget

1985 BMW 535i - $4000 (colorado Springs)

Image

1985 BMW E28 535i. 302,000 miles.Originally a west coast car from Seattle. I have owned this car for 17 years. Purchased it with 225,000 mile and has been used mainly as a third vehicle. It has16" BMW 840i wheels with 225-55-16 tires. The suspension is lowered by 1/2" in the front and 3/4" in the rear. The suspension is Bilstein Sports with H&R lowering springs and adjustable Suspension Techniques sway bars(1" in front/3/4" in the rear). A UUC short shifter kit makes shifts more precise. The headlights are Euro units.7" low beams.5 1/2" low beams. They give off exceptional light compared to originals.
Still handles very well with good highway performance. Paint is original and looks pretty good but it does have its share of small dents and scratches. The interior has held up pretty well with the exception of the dash. It has cracked about as much as a dash can crack.
The sunroof retracts but it doesn't tilt up in its resting position on the drivers rear corner. There is a pivot that is broken. The air conditioning has never worked. It is complete but will have to be replaced with a modern set up. I never cared about it.The windshield needs to be replaced
The motor and transmission work well. It does not burn oil and has always flown through emissions. The radiator and water pump are fairly new as well as the radiator.
This is a great looking 5 series and still gets a lot of compliments at car events.I always planned to keep it until the motor wore out then do a S50 M motor transplant.17 years later it is still going strong!

The CO Springs car looks good and the price is about right. I have a white one as well, I think the body on this is in better shape. The wheels are an upgrade, too. If you want a car, I'd go take a look at this. Mechanically, you can fix anything - it's the body that's difficult and hard (expensive) to fix. Have you looked at this yet?

I agree. The white 535i looks like a phenomenal buy. Yes, the engine has done some serious time, but that body! I have friends in CO Springs and considered having them close the deal for me, but my wife won't allow me the shipping and/or travel money to extend my modest budget.

I didn't see any reference to an E30 so pardon my ignorance. I'll stop trying to help.
