Hi guys, im new to the site and just picked up a 1986 524 td. Im having an issue when starting the car. I constantly have to pump the pedal to get it to start and then when trying to shut it off it takes 10 to 15 seconds or so to finally shut off. I opened the hood and saw this contraption. I've been trying to do some research on the m21 engine and noticed that the injector pump rig I have doesn't look stock like what I've been seeing online and on the forum. I've attached some photos for anyone's input. Im guessing the solenoid that shuts off the fuel is an afterthought as you can tell with the fabrication of the metal bracket and springs installed to give it that little help to shut off the car. Other then that it drives great and the engine runs fine with no leaks or smoke at all. I remember my dad having a 86 524 td (hence the reason I got one) back in the 90's and when the pedal was pushed hard the black smoke it would spew out was intense. this car on the other hand has no smoke what's so ever. didn't know if it was because of all the additives in todays diesel fuel or not. If anyone can give some feedback as to what they see and what I might need to do to fix it is appreciated. thanks in advance.

That pump looks like the base is the normal VE pump. Maybe the original was replaced by a pump from a different car that didn't have the correct bracket. The shutoff solenoid is normally on the driver's side of the pump with a single wire coming off of it.

About your smoke question, it sounds like your current car is running properly. Diesel engines aren't supposed to belch black smoke ever. If you see anything more than a light gray haze, the engine isn't operating as it should. Too much fuel causes very high combustion and exhaust temperatures in addition to putting a ton of particulates into your oil; it can also melt pistons.

Thanks for the reply altus. Thats good news. The only problem i have is My temp gauge is erratic. Sometimes it jumps from cold into the red and sometimes it stays steady a little below the halfway mark. I do notice though when im on the highway and start accelerating the gauge starts climbing almost making it to the red when its steady. I ordered a thermostat and looking to replace the radiator as well. Thx again for the reply
