update 5/10/15 GAUGES ARE IN THE STATES, waiting for senders

NOW CLOSED at 35 interested people. I'll be following up with more information.

This came up in Jelmer's awesome thread: a digital temp/pressure gauge that fits into e28, e24 and e23 clusters.

This is the guy who makes them: http://www.claasi.de/tip001400.php

This is what you get:

These are only made in C/bar currently.

This is what it looks like installed:

Here's Jelmer's post with install details: http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?p=1308304#p1308304

I'm in contact with Roland, the manufacturer, and he's suggested the following price structure:
1-3 units 125 euro per set
4-9 units 115 euro per set
10-15 units 110 euro per set
over 16 units 105 euro per set
for the display unit, cluster front piece with C/bar written on it, the control unit and all mounting materials, but no senders. I have found the necessary senders (E30 M3 oil temp, VDO 1-10 bar pressure with pressure switch contact) and can bundle them at cost.

He's coming to California in May and can bring them over in bulk. I can ship them out after that, but need to know who's interested and can commit, so let's get a list going. I'm going to keep this open for a month to see how many we can get, and am crossposting to bigcoupe.com and r3vlimited.com.

1. kronus - 1 set, with senders
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

I'm going to talk to the guy about F/psi, but no promises. He already said it can't be done..

I'd imagine you'd quickly get used to recognizing what's "normal" values and it wouldn't really matter. I know temp wouldn't bother me, but I'd much prefer PSI over bar.

So with the senders, it's about $140 on the high end, or is that just the gauge? And is this shipped?

I'm in for two (2) sets, both with senders.

deg C and bar are fine with me.

Thanks!

How does it work with auto clusters? Just take out the PNRD?

The sensors are actually about $50 bucks by themselves. For a total price we're looking for $165 + shipping at current exchange rates, since it looks like we have enough people for the full discount! ($175 with SI units instead of metric)

Roland got in touch with me, and he says he can do F/psi if there's demand for at least 10 kits, and they'll be 10 euro more per kit due to the engineering expense, as well as a lead time of 3 months.

This is the list as I see it so far:

mye28:

1) kronus - 1 set with senders
2) Jon2830 - 1 set with senders
3) SmokeyJohn102 - 1 set with senders
4) cek - 1 set with senders
5) Chimi-Changa - 1 set with senders
6) Hffvdbl - 1 set
7) missmye21 - 1 set with senders
8) cgraff - 2 sets with senders

bigcoupe:

9) dwcains - 1 set with senders
10) Euro-M5 - 1 set with senders (maybe 2)
11) M6smitten - 1 set
12) clipper47 - 1 set with senders
13) tschulz - 1 or 2 sets with senders
(several people pending due to being in Australia)

Michael Star - yes, AFAIK you take out the PRND indicator and this thing fits in its place, but I'll confirm with Roland.

I'm interested but have a drawer-full of VDO pressure and temp senders. Any chance Roland would release the specs on what it needs before I buy senders I already own?

The oil temp sender needed is a stock e30 m3 oil temp sender. The oil pressure one is stock 1-10bar with warning contact switch.

Couple of stupid questions. What is normally in that slot that is now going to be taken up by the digital display? In other words, what warning light are we sacrificing in favor of gaining temp/pressure read outs?

Second question. The sendors, i.e. oil temperature and pressure sensors, where will they be installed? Is there an already dedicated place on the car to install them or is there much fabrication necessary to install the senders?

Third question: Can the digital display be dimmed the same way the cluster lights can?

Thanks,

Eamon

Automatic cars have the PRNDL indicator there. Manual cars don't have anything.

The oil pressure sender takes place of the oil pressure switch, and the oil temp sender can be tapped into the side of the oil filter housing. The pressure sender can also be put in the bottom drain of the oil filter canister. Some S38 and M106 cooler-type oil filter housings also have a M12x1.5 blockoff screw that closes a hole normally used for oil feed to the M106's turbo. It can function well for oil temp or pressure.

This is a good page with some documentation: http://home.mindspring.com/~scrappycrow ... nders.html

I've also gotten word from Roland that I shouldn't accept any more people into the group buy for now - he only has 35 PCBs on hand. So, please consider this GB closed. I'll be following up with total price and payment information.

Also, good news, Roland agreed to the following final price break:

100 euro ($110) for C/bar
110 euro ($120) for F/psi

Will it be reopened in the future? If so, sign me up for #1 on that list. F/psi with senders.

Put me down for one F/PSI with senders please.

Dumb question but where does the E30 M3 temp sensor fit on S38? I already have T connection on my S38 filter housing for OPSwitch and mechanical oil pressure gauge. Was considering placing temp sensor the bottom of oil filter canister housing in place of the drain cock?

Looks like the mech. oil pressure gauge can be replace by a oil pressure sender with switch which will leave a spare port, will that work for a temp. sender? The E30 M3 oil filter housing has a port for the oil temp. sender which gives plenty of oil around the sensor bulb.

Any comments?
