Looking for part number for the pulse sensor that reads off the front damper. 88 M5
It's right above the AC compressor.
I looked a number of times and not found it.

Look on your motor.
It is mounted right next to the damper right above the AC compressor.
It must have the ability to read a magnet or ? Never really knew what it did.
Don't have a photo but can get one.

It actually does nothing.....

it runs directly to the diagnostic port and thats it.

OK, when you hook the car up to the mighty big BMW SUN Tester, only then it's usefull....

When you say 'front damper' are you referring to the timing chain tensioner?

This pulse generator reads a small magnet or stud on the outer edge of the front damper. The unit on my car has a number inked on the gray lead that reads 'BMW 1 361 8791' . I have tried a couple of permutations in RealOEM to make it a 7 or 11 digit number, but no joy. FWIW, the later S38 engines in the e34 M5 do have a front pulse generator listed in RealOEM under engine electrical - ignition (part # 12141312895) but they are quite different looking (sensor shape/mounting/harness shape etc.).

I know what you mean. My first thought, especially now that there is an EDC suspension in my garage, was that he meant the solenoids attached to a shock absorber. But no one would ever put that suspension on an e28?!?!?!?

I tired to check the wires but they disappear in the harness going under the throttle bodies. Or is that Ventura's or bufferflies or throats or ..................

And Ovide says is does nothing. I will trace those wires out to check.

As others have said it doesn't do anything and doesn't connect to anything of importance.

FWIW, These position sensors was used on several models and in RealOEM, the number supersedes to 12521279697 which is still available (check e24 M30 engines).

Wired into the engine harness then directly to the diagnostic connector.
