FS: 1986 735i Turbo MS2 5-speed - $3200

NEW PRICE Asking $3200

Overall
215k on odometer. M30B34, this is a 735i turbo, not a 745i. It's a fast, solid, reliable car. Where else are you going to get a roomy 5-speed RWD sedan with great dynamics and 350+HP for this price? Nowhere. Then throw a few hundred $$ at an intercooler setup, a blowoff valve, and spend some quality time with a laptop and this can be a 400HP car for under $5k.

The good
Old cartech kit with turbonetics turbo. Looks for all the world like a TCD kit and works great.
MS2 (V3 board) install with wasted spark GM coil setup. Tune to your heart's content. Runs strong and ping-free at 15psi on 91 octane.
60lb injectors.
Walbro 255 external fuel pump.
New Tial 38mm wastegate from TCD w/1bar spring.
3-gauge pod with A/F, boost, and oil temp. Oil temp is not wired up and no sender is present.
Innovate LM-1 wideband O2.
E34 A/C pusher fan.
16" electric puller fan with adjustable radiator probe. (not run by MS currently)
Newer radiator.
Custom 3" turbo-back mandrel-bent exhaust with magnaflow mufflers. Loud but good and no drone on the highway.
New blower motor.
Heat worked GREAT last winter, this was my winter car.
Heated seats work.
Rear sunshade works.
CD/MP3/SD/Bluetooth/2 amps/10" sub/etc. decent audio setup.
Adjustable swaybars.
Lowering springs. Not cut springs, actual blue-color lowering springs that look for all the world to have been actually intended for an E23.
Bilstein HD shocks/struts.
Go back and read the last 3. Where are you going to find a lowered E23 with adjustable sway bars if you don't buy this one? I'll tell you. Nowhere.
3.46:1 LSD (Or is it 3.64? Memory dyslexia here)
25 below zero and icy? 110 and sweltering? It starts and runs well. Much better than when on Motronic, actually.
Replaced all fuel lines, including all vent lines
Replaced odometer gears with odometergears.com upgraded gears.
COMPLETE HVAC box rebuild. New evaporator, heater core, expansion valve, blower motor, and vacuum pods. It works and it doesn't have vacuum leaks.

The bad
Some rust. Front corners of the rear wheel wells, bottom corners of one or two of the doors, one front wheel well edge, some underneath. Not devastating, but present.
No intercooler. You can have the Water/Air unit with the car, but I'll warn you it's too small to do much of anything at 15psi.
Power antenna doesn't work. Ran it up and unplugged it.
Trunk leaks a little water.
Sunroof is inop.
LSD works GREAT when turning left. When turning right, um...well, it spins the inside tire pretty mercilessly.

Does NOT come with BBS RS's. Sorry I'm keeping those for the Corvair. You can have a nice straight set of E31 turbines (Style 9) with no paint and no tires and drive it away on 14" bottlecaps with Firestone snow tires with lots of tread.

Yes, the headlight has been reinstalled

Come get it in Lincoln, NE for $3200. It's like buying a turbo kit and getting a pretty decent car for free. PM me if you're interested in talking more and I'll happily share my phone #. email is armen DOT badeer AT gmail DOT com.

A good chance they are Dinan springs. A big plus...

I can think of one car right off the bat...

GLWS...I just had to make the comments... :)

OK, that might have been just a bit hyperbolic. Not much, though. :) I had to throw something mildy entertaining into that giant block of text.

Anyone know if a car like this is emission / smog exempt?

In Texas it's exempt from SMOG.

Not a concern here in the northern plains.

I really need to keep my nose out of this section, especially after buying a car last week. :bawl:

Sioux Falls? Made a couple of trips up there (in other cars) over the last few weeks. Just a quick jaunt down the road! You know you want to! :)

I've decided to go ahead and fix some of the issues. Odo gears are replaced, and the heater box is currently removed for major surgery that should result in functional A/C. Fuel hose has arrived and so the fuel/vent lines will be replaced as well.

Did the car sell? Interested in selling the intercooler and sway bars? I also have stock sways to replace them.

Still have the car and it is still torn apart while I rebuild the heater box. Waiting for parts from germany now. I'd sell the intercooler but not the bars, they go with the car.

Just completed a bunch of work including a FULL HVAC REBUILD. See updated first post. I'm serious about selling this car, so let me know if you have questions.

While I was replacing the vent lines I took some detail shots of the underbody and the rusty areas for full disclosure.

Yay, another E23 with working HVAC. Hopefully some of that info I sent worked. :)

BTW, I would stab someone at a bar in Berlin for those sway bars.

It did help, thanks. What would have helped more is for the weather to have been in the double digits when I was working on it!

Bump for new price of $4200. Buy a turbo kit and MS2 and get an E23 for free! If I can get some time and a helper in the daylight, I'll take a video. This is a big, fast, angry, hellaciously fun car.

Probably 60. It was a ton of work and brutally cold which slowed me down. Mine was much more work than normal since I had to do significant repairs to the box itself.

I have posted a pile of info in the E23 sections on bimmerboard and bimmerforums under my same user name. A search will help, if you need more info PM me.

Also have a half finished HVAC write up for E23s I need to proof read and add photographs to also if it would help. The system uses eight vacuum actuators to control air flow. Quite easy, like W123/4/6s of the era. Hell...Behr built them too.

Who made the IC? Why aren't you running it?

Garrett made the intercooler. It's an OEM intercooler for a GMC Syclone.

Correct...and the reason I'm not running it is that the heat exchanger fittings broke. However, it also largely only functioned as an intake restriction at 15psi. MS2 logs showed that it wasn't really doing any cooling. With less boost or a bigger heat exchanger it should be a different story.

A few Corvair pics as requested:

Bump - just did a valve adjustment, replaced a questionable coolant hose that supplied the turbo, and did a quick compression test while I had the plugs out. This is on a STONE COLD engine (hadn't driven it in a week), which of course you're not supposed to do when doing a compression test.

1 - 150
2 - 145
3 - 148
4 - 145
5 - 130
6 - 150

A little wider range than might be ideal, but still healthy on a cold engine IMO. If you're concerned, I'll throw in an extra, complete M30B34 with the car that's been taking up space in the garage for too long. :)

Yes, I do. I had an offer last night to trade it for a PT Cruiser. I'm seriously considering it, since the PT Loser would be presumably easier to sell.

but then you'd have to live with having owned a PT Cruiser...

I am trying to finalize a deal on another e23, if that falls through, I'll buzz you.

I have eight cars now, and I already bought the 911 that replaces this car, so it's getting to be the time where I have to make some decisions
