This is my first shot at refurbishing a set of rims. They really needed it and I think that they came out ok. The car is ready to be primed and finish painted, and I hope to be reassembling within a month or so. Not really sure that these are the right rims for my 16 year old daughter. I foreseen massive curb rash. I my milling over putting on a different set of wheels to delay the carnage or dumping these for a 16" set that can be repaired with paint.





This is a few photos of car and parts ready for primer. Boy I had forgot just how much work goes into painting. Hoping all goes well it has been 12 years since I last pulled the trigger on a paint gun.

The nice work that you are putting in the car for your daughter, is telling me that she is responsible and careful. I think she will be mindful of the curbs. Btw, the rims looks awesome.

That is looking great! That car is going to be a car that most 16 year olds wouldn't appreciate but I've got the feeling your daughter is not an average girl. We just did the same to an E30 for my 16 year old son that I had a thread about on here a couple of months ago. The encouragement from folks on here was awesome and helped us see it through. Please tell about how you refinished the style 5's. I have heard that you have to warm them in an oven to seperate the barrels from the centers after you remove the bolts. Is that true? Also, did you clear the barrels after you polished them?

I did not have to heat them to separate them, just wood block and hammer. So far I have not clear coated the barrels, the centers and the bolt heads have been cleared. As far as refinishing i used a file and sand paper, 220,400,600,1200, and then metal polish on a buff.

Looks great! That refinish looks fantastic! Nice to see a set refinished to an OEM type finish instead of gold or periwinkle centers lol

Not to have a pessimistic outlook (hey, I'm an optimist with experience!) but with a wife, teen & post-teen sons, I give those wheels 1 month before they meet a curb. Nice work!

and those are really easy to bend

I did with my 3 piece RS wheels. I don't know how much it helped or not because these are the only ones I've done.

I have a bent lip that I didn't notice until after it was polished. It might have been that way or maybe I did it with the dead blow hammer or else the polisher did it.

They look great, I think that the 3 section rims might need the heat to soften up the sealant between the barrels, the style 5's do not have sealant or adhesive on the center section, just some oxidation that needs to be Broken to free them from the barrels.

it is going to be Lachssilber or Salmon Silver. This was the original color. Just started block sanding the primer.
