What did you butcher (with a dull knife) to show off a little chunk of two speakers?

You just seriously reduced the structural rigidity that car.

I've cut holes 2-4x that size in the E28 trunk bulkheads and driven them for 50-60k miles afterwards....doesn't affect a thing.
Nice job.

Disregard the peoples douchery comments. You did not affect integrity of car or ruin it. People on this forum like to be a dick.

Agreed.
Now just get a 6 inch speaker cover and mount it over the hole, it will look a lot better. Or better yet take the rear shelf out and recover it in black, gray, or whatever color (probably sun faded anyway) and no one will see the hole there and your sub sound will pass right through

Is that a sealed or ported box?
You'll get better SQ by facing the subwoofers towards the rear of the car.

Good info. I always wondered about questions of placement of box/woofer in the trunk but never took the time to ask them. Good read, not long at all.

At least in Germany, ski bag was an regular BMW dealer´s option with E28´s, E23´s and E24´s. The cutouts look almost identical to the one depicted above.
Given the German authorities´ very high standards when it comes to road safety, I wonder if the cutting really can affect the car´s structural integrity in such a big way...

well i dont really need a cover, thats behind the rear seat and can only be seen when you pull aside the armrest rubber, and as for ported or sealed box ill have to check...
