gotta acquire a block and build it into that, couple ears missing from a other wise cherry b36, i could almost tap the filter boss for fittings and run a remote filter, motor has 91k miles and had perfect leak down #s, scored it for $1750 delivered a while back as a project and thought about modifying a m30 block but haven't gotten around to seeing if its possible to add the drain in the side without too much effort, the cost of having it punched out to the s38 bore would likely get half way to buying a real block but all of the ones ive found the bores are screwed

been back together for a little while but haven't had time to post about it. only really noteworthy thing aside from a normal gasket swap is i added a crack pad to the valve cover channel to knock some of the oil from the vapor


if anybody needs to see pictures of the head apart i can post em, if not ill save space
this evening i finally got around to permanently installing a wideband, when i did the initial tune i ran a dyno style stereo system with a sensor in each head pipe which revealed the odd tendency for one bank to run one afr off from the other, if one was at 14.5 the other could be 13.5, at WOT they could read the same but at cruise they would drift. at that point i just kinda said fuck it and tuned so the lean bank was safe and pretty much haven't plugged the laptop in for almost the last year or so, to solve imbalance and average reading i cut the o2 bung out of a m20 head pipe and welded that between the pipes

was a little bit of a pain in the ass to cut the windows between the pipes but a combo of body saw and dremmel got it done

Those recaros look like the ones out of the old VWs. Some guy just popped up on r3v with a stash and I bought a set.. dunno when his next will be ready.

Nice to see some progress on your engine. I really like that you think outside the box to make the engine that much more better.
Can you give me some more details on what you've done to the cam cover? What is that cleaning pad made of, copper?
And the piece between the pipes, is that so you can add a wideband O2 sensor at that location or just to act as a crossflow between the 2 pipes (or both)?
Also, what sort of tuning will you do (or have you done) to remedy the imbalance situation you found?

its a copper pot scrubber separated into a couple pieces sized to fit in the channel under the plate, one of the first things i did for oil control was to put a piece of the scrubber inside of the tube from the valve cover to the plenum and it killed the high rpm downshift cloud, i've gone from a quart in 500 miles with nothing to a quart in 2000 (i think the oil is done at about that time as it takes another qt in the remaining 1k of a 3k change) with the tube packing and pipe to dump vapor in the bottom of the plenum instead of between the trumpets, i only have about 1 tank of fuel since the last change and install of packing in VC and i just finally have the car running a o2 sensor so it may keep the oil cleaner
its for a aem wideband that is sending a narrowband signal to the computer and showing me the mixture on the display (its my 3rd aem unit in service and they work great, no bullshit like both of the lc1's i had)
i've done just about all i can to equalize and my best guess is at low flow/high return times the fuel rail is favoring one bank over the other, thinking about unplugging the sealed off (i plugged it) cold start injector port and splitting the feed so the rail has two sources

haven't gotten under it but the quarter pulled the frame rail up about 1.5" and the right side trunk gap gets big while the trunk is fairly square at the leading edge so the ass is pushed over too
golf shirt wearing dick whistler that required a mild threat to fuck off, first words out of his mouth "maaan i almost missed you" then proceeds to try to get me to take his insurance card so he could leave, many times, and being told the cops are called every time continued trying till some anger was injected into my reply
was going maybe 40 in typical friday evening traffic starting to slow for brake lights ahead and i get maybe a quarter second glimpse in rv mirror and enough time to think O... he passed the shit out of me so it would've been bad if it was a square hit

Does he have insurance? When someone tries to give you their insurance card so they can leave, it makes me wonder how legit that is.

seemed legit, we'll find out how bad i get hosed once the adjuster looks it over i guess, i have many pictures of its rebuild so that may be worth something, or they'll tell me to fuck myself its a 29 year old pos and to consider my pittance lucky

AEM makes a really cool module for their stand alone ECU. #EPM "engine position module" it would be easy to adapt to the front of the head where the distributor cap and rotor are located. http://www.aemelectronics.com/?q=produc ... module-epm it gives two separate signals a 24 count pulse signal per revolution (12 per crank revolution) and a single TDC pulse per revolution. it is small and easy to work with and a lot less work than modifying the damper and coming up with your own cam sensor. I know this might not work with the stock ECU but with the current availability of aftermarket ECU's I'm not sure I would spend the time and effort trying to use a Motronic ecu as they are not very easy to tune.
BTW I have a Miller WAR chip and AFM on my M5 but have a AEM ECU on my 2002 (Individual throttle bodies, 13:1 Compression ratio, Direct fire coils, Dry Sump, 220hp) The AEM ECU was less expensive than the WAR chip and AFM and a TON more tunable (it data logs, allows real time monitoring and will let you use AFM, MAP or TPS for load sensors) I have also spent a lot of time tuning modern EFI systems on OBDII engines that allow re-flash tuning. The Bosch Motronic is the most limited system of them all.

nothings happened yet, my plan is to start over with another shell but that will be a good while from now as i don't have a handy place to do it any more since i quit german auto, about a week before the crunch i signed the papers on the property next to my home of 25 years and now have a place to build a shop so i guess the m635 project will be the christening project.
if i am to build this bitch again ill nasty up the cheap s38b36 i scored a while back as a investment/project and sell off the m88/3 as its worth more intact/unmolested, time will tell how nasty but at least cams and more compression, boost or nawzzzz are the only things ill count out but i see a couple years before i have shop built and ready to use and plans change (not even done applying a chainsaw to property yet)
