wally, my understanding of the TTS is that it sprays until "an electric current .. warms the switch and opens the circuit after a few seconds" from the Bentley; my Bosch Fuel Injection Handbook agrees with your comment that it operates while the engine is "cranking". My "Bosch FI & Management" says about two seconds for coolant at shop temperature tested with a shop light - that's not what I appeared to see. On my test today, I disconnected the switch, plugged a test light in from G to ground, and observed the current via the light. The light glowed for a second or two after start-up, starter off, then went out.
I'm going to do this test again tomorrow to verify what I saw. Also, I will disable the ignition and operate the starter for a few seconds; at shop temp, my reference says the test light should go on for two seconds and then go out.
I'll confirm or deny that tomorrow.
So have you verified by ohms which is really G and which goes to the CSV?
Don't you mean comes from the CSV? When I look at the schematic, I show power to both wires, BK/YL and BK/RD, from S110. W is the switch and closes, completing the circuit, when G is active below 35C. Doesn't the CSV always have power to it, but is only energized when the heater closes the switch W, thereby allowing current to flow and completing the circuit?
This is what I see and have experienced: a new, updated Bosch design TTS that seemingly causes a difficult hot re-start. Mike W. seemed to have understood that better than myself. None of the readings from that switch make any sense, probably due to the fact that it's an updated design that isn't addressed by our Bentley Manual. Readings are off for a number of reasons, including changes in coolant temp and perhaps, more importantly, the switch itself is malfunctioning. It's certainly inconsistent and I cannot interpret what it's doing. I don't think it's a bad design or a incorrect part; I've verified the part number by box and markings on the switch, and it's cross-referenced to all of the PNs we used on our parts lists for this car. It's also spec'd for virtually every L-Jet and Motronic car ever made up to about '95. I think the new TTS is toast and could have been out of the box. As for the original TTS, which I put back in: I've never replaced this part, until last fall. For all I know, its original, or replaced before my ownership, pre-95. Its readings are consistent with the readings I got when I first suspected I had a malfunctioning TTS last September; in other words, they don't match the spec as written in the Bentley. So, it's either working when it's not supposed to, or something else is going on. For now, disconnecting this, and observing the cars hot restart characteristics will tell me whether or not this switch is the culprit. If the problem disappears when hot, and reappears when the switch is connected to the harness, then I have my answer, and a new switch from BMW would help confirm this. If the problem reappears with new switch, at that point I know I have other problems.
I don't think it's the wiring; I haven't changed the wiring or re-wired anything and the car ran perfectly, hot or cold start, for over twenty years. I'd rather completely rule out a component failure before tearing open a 32 year old harness.
I could, at op temp, test the W side of the TTS connector, the one that comes from (goes to) the CSV. A grounded test light, with ignition disabled, that lights the bulb would clearly show that W is a closed switch, when it shouldn't be. Correct?
Being not as savvy as many, I don't know how to do more advanced electrical testing, so for now, disconnecting the TTS, since it solved the issue by disabling the cold start system, seems to be logical. Remember, we did disconnect the TTS and got a more or less textbook hot restart.
I will, once again, confirm the wiring on the harness connector TO the TTS: if I disconnect the TTS connector, and the harness connector to the CSV is disconnected, this breaks the circuit (power from S110) at W, which would then have no power, and only G would have power. That would confirm G, correct?
Lastly, I'm going to confirm, as tn535i suggested, pin 4 of the ECU, start input. I'll need to review that though to make sure I don't fry an ECU. In theory if pin 4 has current, that means the CSV could always be energized, correct? And that would certainly lead to a richer-than-normal fuel load, and would really be quite obvious at hot re-start; exactly what Mike W. suggested.
I'll have the car on the road tomorrow all day so I'll get a chance to see how this works disconnected, temps in the mid to high 70s. I'll report back.
