More. You made me dig into my bag of tricks.

I could only find 3 at the moment, but fear I have more than that, so I decided to ohm them out. They all had the same 35C, 8 Sec stamped on the side, but 2 different part numbers.

W ~2.0 ohms. In other words a direct connection excluding some resistance in my connections.
G 2 were ~37 ohms, 1 was ~75 ohms. In other words one has a smaller heater in it.

I'm lucky they have enough mass to stay in cold state, it's 102F here today. :laugh:

No, it would not run all the time because the CSV/TTS only gets power when the key is in the crank position, not the run position.
So, the 8s marking on the switch really indicates its maximum interval time based on cranking time; if you crank less, you get less, is that it? Or, does the cranking energize the circuit for the eight seconds? That's never been fully explained in any of the Bosch FI stuff I read. Thank you.

How do you have three of these switches?? Never mind, hang onto them, they've gotten expensive!

"Heater" - I wasn't sure what you and others were talking about when you were referencing heater, now I know, I'd never seen that symbol before and I couldn't find it on any automotive symbols either.

I'm going to update the cold readings on the TTS in the morning, and then post the op temp I get after driving it. I still don't understand how W would be infinite ohms when the engine is hot and still be energizing the CSV.

I'm going to go read Siegel's book and see if I can understand this a bit better.

It's a maximum of 8 seconds if the conditions are cold enough. If you're in 20 below, it's 8 seconds. If you're at 70F, it might be a second or two. If you're in Phoenix in the summer it probably never comes on. But if you crank for a while, give it a brief rest, then crank again it's not supposed to come on again, it's supposed to stay hot so to speak.

I'm a building electrician with considerable experience in electronics down to component level too. So it just kind of comes natural to me.

Didn't make sense to me either, so, I may take readings from not just the base, as called for in Bentley, but actual negative ground, from the braids or the battery. In any event, I'm leaving it disconnected.

Morning Update: cold start, 63F. I did these tests with alligator clips on the spades, and ground direct to the battery and to the base of the switch (no differences noted).

Meter 1: G 6.24 kohms W infinite resistance [symbol on meter 1 .]

Meter 2: G 6.27 kohms W infinite resistance[symbol on meter 0.L]

Engine at op temp, ambient temp 68F, Tests conducted the same way..

Meter 1: G 3.78 kohms W infinite resistance [symbol on meter 1 .]

Meter 2: G 3.80 kohms W infinite resistance [symbol on meter 0.L]

Hot re-start was perfect, no other word to describe (cold start was a little hesitant: clearly this engine needs extra fuel when cold even at moderate temps). Admittedly a little cool today for a typical occurrence of this, I will continue to test in higher ambient temperatures.

Comparing these readings to 'the book' and converting to ohms for simplicity (x1000)

Cold, connector G (heater) shows resistance way way above spec of 40 ohms max: 6240 ohms. Correct? Connector W shows infinite ohms, rather than zero ohms, which is spec: an open circuit, rather than a path to ground. OK?

Hot, connector G (heater) shows resistance way way above spec of 80 ohms max: 3780 ohms. Correct? Connector W shows infinite ohms, which is correct. OK?

Connector is correct, matches wiring diagram and has never been tampered with, in perfect condition, rubber boot attached, wiring appears normal. (Just for my notes, I will re-test all the harness connectors to the ECU cold and hot.)

So, how does these readings translate into a hot re-start with the switch connected and not with the switch disconnected? What am I misinterpreting? Do the high resistance figures of the heater make the switch close? And doesn't the open circuit, infinite ohms, mean that the switch shouldn't be working at all when cold?? I'm stumped. Thank you, Rick

Agree... It makes no sense. If you get high resistance on the heater it means the heater is probably toast and there is just a little conductivity that changes with heat and that there is no real current to the heater that would make anything happen. A 1000+ ohm heater is a useless one.
And... If the switch side always measures high or infinite resistance it should be doing nothing, never grounding power from the CSI, never making the CSI active.

But... Is it possible they have added some diodes in this newer style TTS you mention to only allow current to flow in one direction ?? and you are testing for conductivity in the opposite ? Have you tried swapping leads? Have you tested any old TTS's you have for fun.

Another thing that would be interesting to try is make the connection between the switch side and the wire harness CTS lead with meter looking at amps and see if there is any significant current flow. If you know how to do that properly. That should match the current draw of the CSI.

I guess I'm assume everyone in the discussion realizes the CSI/TTS is ONLY active and has power while there is power to the starter solenoid. Both leads come from same point. So another quick test of your wiring would be to just measure each lead on the harness while you give the starter a bump. It should go to 12vDC but unplug the CSi and there should be 0 at the connector on the CSI side.

Some data on mine hot...

My heater side measures 64 ohms. Seems high based on the spec but still OK for a small heater. The switch side was about 128 ohms though !! That means I don't remember just what I was talking about above and the switch itself is more of a solid state device that still has some conductivity when hot. But realize 128 ohms resistance is high enough the CSI will not active. I will be curious now to do some more measurements for you cold and maybe even look at current on the CSI. Perhaps I'll disable the Main Relay and see how long it cranks cold and activates the CSI before the heater cuts it.

I've done a lot of this troubleshooting in the past on various BMW's but hard to clearly remember everything like resistance measurements really well.

Actual hIgh resistance should not cause/allow the CSV to spray. Your cold measurements say the TTS is out of spec and your hot measurements do not explain/correspond to the hot start problem. But your measurement apparatus with connector disconnected is not the same as the CSV being connected. Consider the possibility of either an evil (non-ohmic, time or vibrations sensitive) bad TTS internal contact or a harness pigtail position sensitive short to ground. Could be either or something else, but so far your good starts and out of spec resistance measurements suggest bad TTS. Even if the TTS contacts are dirty, the heater resistance should remain in spec. Multiple things wrong, possible contamination from topside seal or even coolant entry from below.

If an electrical part is bad from dirty contacts, it does not have to have a defined fixed resistance just so you can neatly mentally categorize it. If a contact was dirty inside the TTS, it does not have to present the same fixed number of ohms to several volts applied as it presents when 12 volts is applied by the CSV circuit. Also, the connector places some forces on the TTS spades and housing non-identical to test leads, if one of those connection spades is mechanically intermittent it could read one way and perform another. If the TTS case is cracked on the coolant side the insides could be reacting to coolant and cranking vibrations.

Use one meter set to measure ohms to measure the other set to measure DC volts, and vice-versa, red to red lead and black to black. Likely you will find they test ohms by applying less than 12 volts, typically 0.5 to 5V, range dependent. Sometimes when measuring dirt you can get way different ohms readings by switching ranges on manual range meters

With respect to having a definite ohms resistance relatively independent of applied voltage, clean metals are generally pretty consistent, resistors within their voltage and power limits are designed to present fairly consistent ohms, insulators can easily be both very voltage and humidity sensitive, semiconductors are often voltage, temperature, humidity, strain, vibration, and polarity sensitive, and dirt (corrosion products of metals on contacts) is worse than semiconductors (voltage and current sensitive, non-repeating measurement results because the test current changes the conduction paths by plating and vaporization and the test voltage bridges around/thru minute insulating gaps).

Pity the CSV is so inaccessible. When the TTS connector is plugged in, the CSV is testing the switch with 12V each time it presumably spoils a hot start, I think, unless harness is evil. But to confirm this you could measure the CSV current, measure the switch voltage pulling down CSV node to ground during crank, or devise an alternate 12V driven visually observable test load. Unfortunately all of these disturb the TTS connector and harness pigtail or require disassembling the rear connection boot.

Depending on your crimp/solder wiring ability you can rig a 12V tungsten test lamp (not LED) or relay or solenoid and see if the TTS switch, when hot or cold, can run your in series test load when tested with 12V applied. But be careful, don't end up shorting +12V direct to the switch or case due to miswiring or a slip. Don't try this if you are not confident wiring, checking your work and probing. You don't want a wire falling on the TTS, and doing a weld job on the threads making removal harder. The CSV is about 4 ohms so it draws 3 amps or less, keep tester current below this.

Really, it boils down to this switch, doesn't it? Here's the exact switch from Bosch Classic:

As you can see, this switch is markedly different from the switch installed on the E28, originally. The two P/Ns listed for this TTS in realoem, 13 62 1 362 599, which supersedes 13 61 1 274 630, both cross reference to Bosch F026 T03 100, listed on the Bosch site.

Now, I did find my old switch: it was in the new Bosch box in my spares; I never throw anything away either. I('ve verified that the P/N on the Bosch box matches the cross reference shown in the Bosch site.)

I reinstalled the old (OE) switch and took readings:

G 131 ohms (.131 kohms) W 63.5 ohms, not cold, coolant a little warm, not hot (temp in the blue zone)

Old switch showed continuity out of the (new) box.

Interesting, I hadn't considered the possibility that the new ones could be semiconductors. I used to often get usable readings with analog meters if I knew what I was supposed to be testing, but DMMs are useless on semiconductors. Judging from my readings the old TTS's were a simple heater with a simple switch, but I see the new ones are a completely different shape, further suggesting there could be a difference inside too. I agree, if you can measure current, that would be a far more definitive way of determining what's going on. I've definitely seen semiconductors show good, but short out under load.

I was dimly aware that modern cars had silicon chips in thermotime switches, but with some incorrect muddled thinking I thought that yours from two years ago was a heated bimetal design with the usual silver contacts inside. :oops: Your modern TTS probably just needs a firmware update to be compatible with some other modern replacement part you have installed, provided you are paid up on software subscription fees. :rofl:

Well, I feel like I'm the slow boy in class here. Too much info.

(I can only hope that BMW is stocking the correct TTS for these cars, because from the sounds of the conversation here. what is being sold by Bosch for our cars isn't the same part. Did I get that right?)

Right, I completely agree. However, what if the switch is so changed internally that it bears little resemblance to the originally specified switch? I looked at the spec sheet on the cars this is fitted to: virtually every L-Jet equipped vehicle ever made. Maybe, I just got a bad one?

I'm usually pretty good about overall cleanliness - I don't see anything here that would lead to think I have an issue. This is a pretty clean engine bay, original connectors, no disturbance, harness checks out okay at the ECU end. I don't say it's impossible though.

And I can crimp (I have the right tools to do OE-style crimps) but I solder badly. Make that awfully badly.

I do not know how to do this. The first part, I mean. And CSI = cold start valve, yes?

I'm a novice remember? Walk me through that, gently. In a few words. I can pick up on it easily, I just want to make sure I understand exactly what you mean so that I don't wind up scerwing up a component or frying an ECU.

I think I will just go drive the car tonight for a while. After I replace the curiously inconsistent "new" no-name ICV that I installed and replace it with a Bosch unit that likely works better, even used. More later...

My new measurements... AND retracting a few of my assumptions above that I based on limited measurements and the ETM !

Cold (well ambient today) heater side 32 ohms and switch side 0.2 ohms. Clearly switch closed, heater in spec too. Also 32 ohms between terminals.
Hot (after getting home) heater side up to 64 ohms and switch side 130 ohms. And between terminals also 64 ohms.

So there is a little more to this thing than the circuit as shown in the ETM. Maybe some old TTS units match the ETM but neither yours or mine does. Curious the heater resistance doubles hot and the resistance between switch terminal and ground also double that. But the hot values match your old TTS so I think your old one was fine.

I think I can explain it like this... Picture two small heaters in parallel at 64 ohms each. One is always grounded and the other is common to the ICV contact and then to the thermal switch. So when both heaters are grounded the resistance is only 1/2 or 32 ohms. But when the switch opens there is no ground on one side and resistance goes up to 64 ohms (one heater only). Now the ICV terminal is no longer grounded but still has a connection to ground but through both heaters in series for 2x64 ohms.

Does that make sense.

And yes I think it matches above and both of these 30+ year old TTS units are fine !

Makes sense to me and I like the two heater path model. You can further validate it in the hot, switch open condition by applying a test voltage between W and case ground (an ohmmeter or lab power supply will do) and using a separate voltmeter to observe about 1/2 the applied test voltage appearing at the voltage divider point G with respect to case ground. At the instant the TTS switch opens in normal use the inductive energy stored in the CSV coil magnetic field would dump into the 64 ohm path back to cranking +12V power node rather than arc the contact gap, enhancing the life of the switch contact.

This has got me thinking for the first time about diagnostic procedures and values being captured in documents like the ETM and Bentley and then replacement parts undergoing design changes and even alternative designs with similar function but completely different diagnostic electrical characteristics. Looking at the electronic TTS catalog pages, it is not clear how to measure/test that animal, say a replacement someone bought, before installing it and trying it with the CSV. Clearly it has to be powered on the G terminal while the W terminal is connected to a load resistor or inductor to +12V, to give the electronics reliable drive voltage that exists even when W pulls to near ground. If it has active electronics inside, measuring W with G open or grounded is likely wrong, and the catalog does not provide a test circuit and ohmic or non-ohmic values like max acceptable switch voltage drop at 3 amps load.

I think I follow you. I'm not an EE but I get the basics. The way I imagined it was a sandwich where the two pieces of bread are semiconductors with resistance that generate heat and in between is a piece of bologna that is the thermal switch.

Here is the reason I replaced this switch to begin with. This is my morning test, cold engine 65F, test condition below 86F 30C, original switch re-installed:

G 2.0 ohms W 35.7 ohms

(both the readings taken on the body with a large alligator clip pressed against the body. Direct attachment to battery ground showed a difference of .2 ohms and 1.4 ohms, respectively. Switch shows continuity between G & W. Harness connector G shows continuity to ground.)

Spec is G 25-40 ohms and W is zero (0.00) ohms

These readings would indicate logically that the switch should be replaced, based on the Bentley. This is why I replaced it initially. Interestingly, starting the car with the TTS disconnected yields a weak but immediate start, AFTER two long cranks (not beyond 4 seconds each). Starting with the TTS connected duplicates the hesitant, no-idle 'start' as always.

Back to Square 1. I'm going to drive the car for a day or two with the (old) TTS installed and disconnected. I don't think our weather here is going to be warm enough to really put this to the test, but I'll get some impressions anyway. Then I will connect it and see what difference it makes. My prediction is with the TTS plugged in, it will hesitate just as before. At that point, I can only assume that both switches are malfunctioning, minus any other evidence of malfunction, and assuming good hot re-start with the TTS unplugged.

In my thinking 1-2 ohms is more as less as good as dead short. If I put my meter leads together I get about 0.5 ohms, sometimes I subtract that. You might see as much as 1-2 ohms just across your leads.

But maybe we are missing other things. Look at the ETM page 1240-1 where it shows the CSV and TTS. There is also a lead to the DME pin 4 for the starting condition. Normally that will be grounded because the solenoid resistance is very low (2-3 ohms) when the start voltage is not present. But if you have a problem with that pin 4 lead and it is never grounded the ETM indicates it will cause the car to run rich. So if it were rich due to that and even richer due to activation of CSV you'd have some trouble even after it comes to life. Might not manifest off idle and maybe the DME compensates when closed loop but I would imagine on hot restart it is going too rich at first, just a thought.

However, you cannot simply ground pin 4 or you WILL have a short when you hit the starter solenoid with power if the Bl/Yl wire is in tact. But a quick check of Pin 4 to ground and you should get just a few ohms. It should go to 12v when you hit the starter though. So I guess the DME also enriches fuel while cranking and the CSV/TTS adds even more if cold enough.

So crazy idea... I've seen solenoids with two leads as shown in the ETM. What if your Bk/Yl wire is on the wrong lead at the coil ? I would think the starter might not even pull in but IDK. It's just an idea after looking at the ETM and an easy check would be diagnostic pin 11 does in fact go to 0vDC when the starter is not engaged.

But back to TTS... if your TTS W lead is at the 120-130 ohm range it should have NO Effect when you plug it back in on a hot restart unless there is some other thing going on. What happens if you start it hot unplugged and plug it back in once running. Does that make it stumble momentarily? If so is there power on either TTS lead once the car is running? They should also be 0.

I do not think I have a rich or even slightly rich condition while running or at speed, not now. One of the things I commonly check (and it's always been accurate, +/-), is the OBC avg mileage; last night I did a short 25 mile run up to some forgotten gas station here on the high plains, and I got 28.0 mpg reset. I've been checking this for years, but especially so in the last few as I've been chasing this problem, and it's never been this good. Now this was with minimal 'stop and go', country/county roads, temps in the 60s, speeds 5-55.. still, I haven't seen that kind of mileage in more than ten years. Maybe I'll run her to Castle Rock tonight, see what happens.

I'll pull the ECU harness and re-test everything. I saw no issues with either pins, connectors, corrosion, anything when I did it last week. I'm also going to go re-test the damn thing this morning, just to make sure, with a different meter. My meter clearly showed 2.0 OHMS, not M or K; still, I want to be certain.

I'm also going to find my test light and connect G to ground, observe on/off key, and spin the starter with my remote, so see if I'm getting power to the switch all the time or just when I'm supposed to, etc. Do you recommend I remove a relay to do this? Main relay?

I'm making the assumption that everything from S110 on the engine loom is correct. I've never disturbed this. The connector on the harness only fit the one way. IF BK/YL is attached to W, and BK/RD was attached to G, would that even be a circuit? It's funny you say this: inside the TTS harness connector, the two leads are crossed as they go to the pins, crossed as in the wires look twisted across each other, like an "X'. And given that I've never removed the boot off this connector, what I'm seeing would be "factory original" (and no one but me has laid a hand on this engine in 18 years). Since G would clearly illuminate a test light on 'start', if so, and assuming the connector/TTS plugs are connected properly (they only go one way!) I'd say we have a properly wired circuit.
But back to TTS... if your TTS W lead is at the 120-130 ohm range it should have NO Effect when you plug it back in on a hot restart unless there is some other thing going on. What happens if you start it hot unplugged and plug it back in once running. Does that make it stumble momentarily? If so is there power on either TTS lead once the car is running? They should also be 0.
I'll check this in a few. I'm stuck waiting for a package all day, might as well be useful..I 'll be back.

Not being at all familiar with the system used on these cars, I may be way off base here but have you ever done a fuel pressure test on this when its acting up? I'm wondering if maybe you have an injector that leaks down when hot, or maybe the fuel pump gets lazy when its hot and it takes an overly long time to build up fuel pressure. I've seen both of those issues on other things, but I can't say I've seen it temperature dependent.

Just a random thought from someone who knows nothing about what you're working on.

Reading that posted G=2 ohms W=35.7 ohms: I am wondering, G and W identification error or wiring error causing identification error or part really performed swapped pinout function? I know you wrote bad part per Bentley but I am also thinking something is reversed and could damage other stuff like wiring and/or replacement part. Or make our heads explode if we think about this much longer...

Is your old TTS, and the new modern one body marked as to G and W?

My original VDO TTS is marked G and W in the plastic sides just below the locking lugs, and the ohms correspond.
When polarization ribs point to 12 noon, G is at 9 o'clock and W is at 3 o'clock when looking down at the male spades of the TTS.

We don't want the switch function to be trying to pull down the starter energizing circuit 42 amps without the CSV 4 ohms in series!

So if the wiring is such that the reported W function (low ohms to ground when cold) connects thru near zero ohms G wiring direct to S110/Diagnostic 11, some sensor damage and maybe some harness wiring and wire insulation could have been damaged setting up later intermittent opens/shorts.There is no current limiting in that Ignition key circuit, only the briefness of turning the key to start.

Pressure was tested both running and not running by bypassing the relay; residual pressure was corrected; both fuel pumps are new, CSV new, dampers new, filter new, she holds pressure past the twenty minute mark. Hoses are new, clamps are new. FPR is new-ish and passes all tests. I've ruled out fuel pressure issues because any issues were resolved on the first go around, I also thought fuel pressure issues since it's hard to test the in-tank fuel pump and a hot re-start is a common symptom of a failing in-tank pump. I replaced all of these components with Genuine BMW or Bosch. The in-tank pump was a genuine NOS BMW unit.

The odd no-idle slow start happens when it's hot. We're focused on the TTS because disconnecting it has, for once, allowed a "normal" hot start, but we don't really know why. A Bosch replacement TTS is different in design and it's thought that the values in the Bentley don't apply; in any event it did not appear to solve any problems..

I would think the exact same thing. Having owned this car since 1995, and having done nothing to this that would create an issue that I can think of (no re-wiring, no add-ons, nothing untoward: anything I've done wiring or electrical-wise has post-dated the appearance of this issue, such as new Bosch fuel injector connectors) I can't image what a wiring issue could be. The harness connector only connects to the TTS one way; Bosch's cure for swapping wires. I am going to use a test light to verify that the G lead is actually delivering power when cranking, here shortly. The switch cold shows continuity. No one could have switched the pins in the connector, or at the ECU. We'd be in The Twilight Zone if that happened without my knowledge.

I wasn't able to drive it today and anyway it's really too cool outside for this to really show up; the car tends to need extra fuel below 65F to start smoothly from cold. I'm now going to get out the Ouija Board and my prayer beads... :rofl:

Keep in mind that if your test light only requires much less than 3 amps to light up bright, it would light up pretty good when powered thru the CSV W lead also. So physical position and wire color codes notwithstanding, use the ohmmeter at some point to figure up which of those wires is the direct connect to S110/Diagnostic 11, which goes to the CSV and verify the resistance of the CSV. It's fairly easy to swap two wires when assembling the connector at the factory I think. If the factory is good there is a computer controlled harness tester that sweeps thru not only every necessary connection verified present but also verifies no possible cross connections exist. But at the beginning of a production year the tester may not be quite ready, so they functionally test then ship. Hot starting function could easily be overlooked.

A couple of quick things:

Pin 11, Diagnostic connector, only lights in start.

On the loom to the TTS, using a test light, G lights ONLY in start, and goes out within seconds of the car running. I checked power using a remote start and main relay removed; both G and W have power when cranked.

I will drive the car with the TTS disconnected for a few days and verify that the problem is gone. Hopefully we'll get some days with warmer weather ahead so I can really see if it will start when when hot in higher ambient temperatures.

Have I missed anything?

Now THAT is food for thought. I had thought for decades that S110/D11 dropped IMMEDIATELY when key left start. But until the starter motor RPM spin down, the back EMF of the starter now operating as a generator is being dumped back into the S110 node maybe? And during those seconds if the timer in the TTS has not expired, CSV fuel spray can continue if TTS temperature warrants? Starter motor model inertial dependent enrichment?

So have you verified by ohms which is really G and which goes to the CSV?

I have reviewed every TTS reading you made from 8/4 to 8/8. Now that we know the new TTS is electronic we can set aside the reports of infinite ohms W. The G was reported as 52,52,59 all cold and then 3.8K hot 6.24K cold, 3.78K hot, hard to explain the abrupt change at 8/6 12:15 PM. Then old TTS was reinstalled (I presume it goes into a different rotational position on the block) and what look like reversed reading of the original design conforming to the tn535i two resistor model were reported.

Speculation: If it is just a reporting discrepancy there may be no reversal, no wire damage, no shorts, just two normal TTSs operating properly, connected correctly, one of which we can't diagnose properly with ohms readings, both of which enrich properly the mixture when they decide, which complicates the unwanted enrichment from a very small fuel drip into the manifold not just on the hottest days but everyday, compensated for by the ICV when lubricated and the needed extra air is within its air metering range. Combination of correct CSV and drip might exceed ICV range on ordinary day hot starts. Drip alone, no TTS/ CSV might still be within range of ICV to provide extra air, already demonstrated on some warm days but hot day performance yet untested.

So even on a normal temperature day, if connecting the TTS leads to that slow crawl upwards hot starts, it might be worth it to drive TTS disconnected, park hot and wait your favorite heat soak interval of time, pull the main relay and crank to air out the manifolds and cylinders, reconnect TTS and main relay, test for immediate hot start and RPM. No need to wait for a 90 degree day if everyday the TTS causes a startup RPM crawl. The TTSs might be good but point out something else is super-enriching when parked and hot soaking, even at moderate temperatures.

I believe you have tried one hot restart after pulling the main relay, no change, 8/5 7:52 PM, but I think the TTS was still connected and spraying residual fuel from the rail. I had warned about this 8/5 3:55 but I believe disconnecting the TTS began in the report 8/6 10:36. So may need to be tried with CSV disabled by unplugging TTS in addition to main relay during the airing out of the manifolds/cylinders.

wally, my understanding of the TTS is that it sprays until "an electric current .. warms the switch and opens the circuit after a few seconds" from the Bentley; my Bosch Fuel Injection Handbook agrees with your comment that it operates while the engine is "cranking". My "Bosch FI & Management" says about two seconds for coolant at shop temperature tested with a shop light - that's not what I appeared to see. On my test today, I disconnected the switch, plugged a test light in from G to ground, and observed the current via the light. The light glowed for a second or two after start-up, starter off, then went out. I'm going to do this test again tomorrow to verify what I saw. Also, I will disable the ignition and operate the starter for a few seconds; at shop temp, my reference says the test light should go on for two seconds and then go out. I'll confirm or deny that tomorrow.

Don't you mean comes from the CSV? When I look at the schematic, I show power to both wires, BK/YL and BK/RD, from S110. W is the switch and closes, completing the circuit, when G is active below 35C. Doesn't the CSV always have power to it, but is only energized when the heater closes the switch W, thereby allowing current to flow and completing the circuit?

This is what I see and have experienced: a new, updated Bosch design TTS that seemingly causes a difficult hot re-start. Mike W. seemed to have understood that better than myself. None of the readings from that switch make any sense, probably due to the fact that it's an updated design that isn't addressed by our Bentley Manual. Readings are off for a number of reasons, including changes in coolant temp and perhaps, more importantly, the switch itself is malfunctioning. It's certainly inconsistent and I cannot interpret what it's doing. I don't think it's a bad design or a incorrect part; I've verified the part number by box and markings on the switch, and it's cross-referenced to all of the PNs we used on our parts lists for this car. It's also spec'd for virtually every L-Jet and Motronic car ever made up to about '95. I think the new TTS is toast and could have been out of the box. As for the original TTS, which I put back in: I've never replaced this part, until last fall. For all I know, its original, or replaced before my ownership, pre-95. Its readings are consistent with the readings I got when I first suspected I had a malfunctioning TTS last September; in other words, they don't match the spec as written in the Bentley. So, it's either working when it's not supposed to, or something else is going on. For now, disconnecting this, and observing the cars hot restart characteristics will tell me whether or not this switch is the culprit. If the problem disappears when hot, and reappears when the switch is connected to the harness, then I have my answer, and a new switch from BMW would help confirm this. If the problem reappears with new switch, at that point I know I have other problems.

I don't think it's the wiring; I haven't changed the wiring or re-wired anything and the car ran perfectly, hot or cold start, for over twenty years. I'd rather completely rule out a component failure before tearing open a 32 year old harness.

I could, at op temp, test the W side of the TTS connector, the one that comes from (goes to) the CSV. A grounded test light, with ignition disabled, that lights the bulb would clearly show that W is a closed switch, when it shouldn't be. Correct?

Being not as savvy as many, I don't know how to do more advanced electrical testing, so for now, disconnecting the TTS, since it solved the issue by disabling the cold start system, seems to be logical. Remember, we did disconnect the TTS and got a more or less textbook hot restart.

I will, once again, confirm the wiring on the harness connector TO the TTS: if I disconnect the TTS connector, and the harness connector to the CSV is disconnected, this breaks the circuit (power from S110) at W, which would then have no power, and only G would have power. That would confirm G, correct?

Lastly, I'm going to confirm, as tn535i suggested, pin 4 of the ECU, start input. I'll need to review that though to make sure I don't fry an ECU. In theory if pin 4 has current, that means the CSV could always be energized, correct? And that would certainly lead to a richer-than-normal fuel load, and would really be quite obvious at hot re-start; exactly what Mike W. suggested.

I'll have the car on the road tomorrow all day so I'll get a chance to see how this works disconnected, temps in the mid to high 70s. I'll report back.
