Love the progress so far. Pretty excited to see how you're doing the black and white theme.
I have part of mine shadow lined (Tail light trim, grill. Might finish the rest. I don't like chrome much) with a partial Euro bumper swap.
One thing I'm noticing is the C pillar vent is supposed to be painted to match your body paint, but I have to say, I'm really glad mine doesn't.

Good news is Tim the Mechanic is probably just as pumped to see this done as you are by this point.
I would say go standalone right off the bat. Motronic is kind of shoddy sometimes and you need to redo the harness Anyway. I've had at least three go through my car.

Don't condemn a proven, working system due to your inabilities.

I don't think the Motronics are that bad or unreliable. Standalone is fun if you know how to deal with it or if you have loads of money to let someone do it for you otherwise stay away from it.

Not interested in getting involved in this boys, however a ex BMW tech I know how now has an independent BMW shop mentioned to me a few weeks ago randomly that he was having problems with his 635csi, and one of his mates reminded him that when they were both younger dealing with these cars from new, the Ecu's used to fail in the soldering joints, hence the ECU's failed and either were replaced or re-soldered. We're talking 20+ years ago when it was an issue too!

Oh and the reason I saw him as he wanted a M30 ECU from my pile of spares, as the one his customer had had failed, they plugged mine in and away it went.

It's running, wheels are on, just waiting on the clutch line for its maiden voyage round the block. If you look back a page or two there's some pics of the wheels and a vid of it running :-)

The real wheels make it look like a car instead of an empty shell (unlike with the bottle caps). First drive hopefully this weekend, all depends if the body shop can repair the dent in the back/paint the new bonnet in time.

So I've finally woken up to the mechanics incompetence and taken it to someone who knows what they are doing and get the job finished. A few things left to tidy up, but I'll hopefully be driving it home sometime next week

Bumpers are on, throttle cable sorted and fixing all the little things, should be driving it home next Friday

You have some serious commitment to this project. Looking good! Are you going to install the side skirts?
