dmv trips are always with butterflies in my tummy.
the plate shredder part
i went last week to get the historic plate after talking to many
negative people one nice employee took me seriously and help me apply for the plates.
btw just out of curiousity i also took some blue plates i found at a yard and they all said blue plates only go back to cars pre- 1972
sucha stupid rule.
if the historic plates wont come i had planned to put up blue plates anything to keep away from the boring white ones.
well see

Good luck with that. As an option, you can always get the newly re-issued blue plate specials with new character sequence. It's the best you're going to get if you want an older style plate. BTW they're wrong about the date cut-off of for blue plates: they were issued all the way through 1987. Perhaps you had a 6 character plate, then they would have been correct.bunty wrote:dmv trips are always with butterflies in my tummy.

I wouldn't worry too much about not getting your Historic Vehicle plates, they didn't even question my application.
Congrats on the plates Chris; yes outings the DMV/MVD are always a riot (especially if you like masochism). Glad to see progress is being made. Like I said before, can't wait to see it in person. (Maybe next month...?)

Haha. I guess I didn't pick up on her signals. Struck me as apathy. Could be the same thing, perhaps.
In somewhat interesting news, I have started the project of baselining this car. It's been well-maintained over the years, but some things are needed. A brake booster for sure. I have practiced on the red car and managed not to kill myself or anyone else as a result, so I think I can take that experience towards making the M535i better. Of course, I started wondering if I should do the bomb and everything. I realized I should, so we will do all of that, too. It's going to get a cooling system and plugs, too. The radiator is a Nissens. I think I'll keep it for now. The whole system was done in 2001, about 3,000 miles ago.
I'm going to go through the brakes. Pads and rotors are good, but I'm going to pull the calipers and clean them out. To be safe, I'll do repair kits on them, but on the 528i, I just cleaned the dust boot and the old seal and reused them. No reason I couldn't do that here. Still, that wasn't planned and while I'm in there...
The steering box mount needs fixing. Unfortunately, the MWrench fix is kinda tough since the undertray affixes to a spot adjacent to it and consequently, the speednut will not fit there. I've figured a solution to that, though. I could ether make a slot in the subframe to slip the speed nut through from the other direction, or I could find a grommet that fits in that hole that will accept a screw to hold up that corner of the tray.
Either way, I'm going to spend some more time tomorrow taking things apart, and likely getting the booster in. I'll order the rest of the parts for this stage on Monday.

Over the last couple of days, in the meager amount of time I've had to work on the car, we've accomplished the following:
-Rebuilt brake booster installed
-New brake bomb and pressure switches
-All hydroboost return hoses replaced and new canister filter
-Replaced all cooling hoses (everything was replaced 3000 miles ago, so I left the radiator, fan clutch, overflow bottle and the heater valve insert. T-stat was newer than that too (71°), but I changed it as well.
-Oil change, air filter, etc
-New plugs (Bosch W8DC equivalent) replacing WR9LS plugs (cap and rotor 3k miles old)
-New belts
-New fuel hoses under the hood
-New muffler hangers
-UUC stainless brake lines
-New seals in all four calipers.
-MWrench steering box mount repair/reinforcement
Once I re-bled the brakes with the engine running and lifting the front and rear of the car separately, I took it out for a short test drive. I decided to put the RS212s on it and see how it looked. At night. I took a photo with my phone. Then I went home and made a call with my camera.

Sadly, the phone camera simply cannot do the wheels justice.

Great work. That was a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I have been hoping to see a different car in July, but I think I would be okay with this one too.
After seeing those RS 212s in person, I can say that the picture does not do them justice. They are one of the most beautiful sets of wheels I have ever seen. They look much bigger with light on them.
Well done.

The bigger one to the left is the factory alarm system(?) Shame they stuck there on the door, but I guess it makes as much sense there as anywhere else.cek wrote:Chris,
What's the deal with the driver's door locks? It looks like there are two?
(I would post a picture out of the options catalog, but I can't seem to find it at the moment...)
It is the stock location for it. The tell-tale is located next to the license plate. On E23s and E24s, the lock is next to the plate and the tell-tale is by the drivers door handle. The alarm works. Tried it out the other day. There's a magnetic key you use to arm/disarm. I will post a couple photos of that.
I've seen the setup on the E24, just haven't yet on an E28 (at least not in person). Still kind of an eye-sore, stock or not.wkohler wrote:It is the stock location for it. Entered the M535i (and the B7) in our local CCA chapter "concours" today. Thanks to George (boastless) for driving the M535i out there and back for me.

From left to right: My friend Roger's 535is, the M535i and my B7 Turbo.

Had a nice selection of other cars, several E24s, a couple E21s, some highly modified E30s, a nice roundie '02 and PEARRAMP was there with his very nice 535i. I didn't start taking photos until after he left, though, so no photo. Of course, as usual, I kept getting distracted, so not many photos.
The M535i received an award for second place in the Classic (1996 and older) category. Not bad for it's first time out!
After we got back today, I had to drive the car some myself, so I took a few shots of the car with the RSs while it was light out.

I really like this car. Like, I, like totally, like really, like this car.

Chris:
The car looks just great. I really like it with the RS wheels - the throwing stars are just a bit too modern for this car, IMO. I'd like to find a nice M535i one of these days. I've swapped some emails with Ivo about his. Perhaps that will work out. Enjoy yours!
BTW, how did the B7 do in the concours?

Thanks Mike! In person from certain angles, these wheels look just fantastic on this car. That said, despite the throwing stars being a bit more modern, I find they suit the M-tech kit pretty well, as we've seen on Jim's car, Duke's car, etc. More likely than not, they will be the regular wheels on the M535i. If I want to go drive on some twisty roads, these likely won't be on the car. I guess we could call these dress shoes.gray635 wrote:Chris:

The B7 Turbo did well in the concours, winning the Classic category. We narrowly missed the People's choice/President's award to an E46 M3. One vote, they said when they presented the award. I drove away with two trophies, so I'm not complaining one bit. Both cars got a lot of attention, which was surprising given that our CCA chapter is more centered around the current offerings (that's why the "classic" category is 1996 and earlier). I had to miss this event last year as it was rescheduled due to rain to a weekend I was out of town. Glad I could make it this year.
Chris, it was a blast to drive the M535; thanks for giving me the opportunity. Congrats on the 1st and 2nd place finishes in the classic category. I'm still shaking my head over that one vote for President's/People's choice.
I was also a little too distracted to take a lot of pics but here are the one's that are decent enough to share:

Ditto on all of that. Beautiful cars. The new "classic" definitions really bug me. Heck, I am even offended that my E34 is eligible for the Vintage. Great job Chris.gray635 wrote:That's two fine looking old BMWs! Congratulations on both wins. But if an E46 M3 won the event overall, you need to start hanging around with a better class of folks!Like us!
If they think "Classic" is 1996, they must be lots younger than me.
