I hear you and perhaps there needs to be alternative ways of reporting the news.pleasefixitup wrote:news means north east west south. to inform the public on the happenings of the world should not be a money making scheme.wkohler wrote:I didn't realize news was about money. Thank you for setting me straight on that.
I don't necessarily have a problem with someone making a profit from publishing a newspaper, but the problem is when profits supersede every other consideration. At bottom, it's a moral question. It's not money that's at the root of all evil, but the love of it. The photographer loved it more than the life of a man. The Post loved it more than decency.
Perhaps you should start your own non-profit news organization and donate your time.pleasefixitup wrote:news means north east west south. to inform the public on the happenings of the world should not be a money making scheme.wkohler wrote:I didn't realize news was about money. People annoy me when they think that no one should be paid for the time, effort, or education. General Contracting has gotten very difficult because people don't want to pay a fee for the service. If you think it's so easy, go ahead and try to run the project yourself.

I already donate my time to the local elementary school as a wrestling coach.tsmall07 wrote:Perhaps you should start your own non-profit news organization and donate your time.pleasefixitup wrote:news means north east west south. to inform the public on the happenings of the world should not be a money making scheme.wkohler wrote:I didn't realize news was about money. My father told me once, "you don't get paid for what you do, you get paid for what you know." This always stuck with me.
so a photographer isn't really paid to snap photos, but he's paid for his/her knowledge of the camera, correct aperture and shutter speed settings, how to develop film or modify pictures in photoshop etc...
same with a mechanic, he/she not paid to turn a wrench. But they're paid for properly diagnosing a problem and knowing how to fix such problem.
there isn't enough money in the world that anyone could pay me to watch a man die and stand as a spectator to his death.
Your original comment was about the news media in general. Not sure how you arrived at all that in your last post from what I said.pleasefixitup wrote:I already donate my time to the local elementary school as a wrestling coach.tsmall07 wrote:Perhaps you should start your own non-profit news organization and donate your time.pleasefixitup wrote:news means north east west south. to inform the public on the happenings of the world should not be a money making scheme.wkohler wrote:I didn't realize news was about money. As a photographer, I know plenty of people who KNOW NOTHING and have taken jobs from me because they have a camera and can push a button when someone stumbles in front of it. If I bring a car to a mechanic and tell him to change the brake pads and rotors, s/he's getting paid to change the pads and rotors, not sit there like the great thinker wondering why the car needs pads and rotors changed. They don't get paid by hours of knowledge, rather hours of doing a particular job.
Media stays in business by selling ads. They can get more money if they have higher ratings or greater circulation. I bet there are many people who bought a copy of the NY Post simply because its controversial.

Of course, you shouldn't pay someone else to change your pads and rotors. It's a ridiculous ripoff.

I don't know how to properly explain it. Yes, the news makes way too much money--but for that man to take money to watch a person die--he may have to go to court.
I don't know if anyone on this board remembers the northbrook illinois powerpuff football scandal...my friend filmed girls getting beat up.
if he took money for the movie, he would have had to go to court. but if he "gave" the movie to the news station--he didn't have to go to court.

Amen and well said. There's not enough money in the world to watch that and think I stand to make a few bucks by snapping his photo.pleasefixitup wrote: I already donate my time to the local elementary school as a wrestling coach.

Over the past few years, I've been through a sort of metamorphosis on the question of money. In short, I've come to conclusion that the less of it that I need to live on means more freedom. Less of a desire for more things means less temptation to do the sorts of things that desperate or greedy people do---like take photos of dying people to sell for profit, buy a house I really can't afford, sell drugs, be like Madoff and etc. Nearly every societal ill can be directly traced to the love of money or the things it can buy.

Not having money makes me go crazy. Living paycheck to paycheck, just barely making bills...having to count dollars instead of hudreds...not being able to afford vacation, let alone gas or anything recreationally fun...GKLCPA wrote: Over the past few years, I've been through a sort of metamorphosis on the question of money. having money in the bank is peace of mind for me. knowing I have it to spend keeps me sane, but it's like rat that will chew it's way out of anything. I don't want to be that rat.
BUT there is a huge limit to the things I will do for money. My main goal is sleeping at night. I will not perform any action that will cause me to stay up and question my lack of nobility. So I'll make money honorably, so I can be proud and also content.

Yes you can and companies do it all the time.pleasefixitup wrote:you can't put a price on a human life.
Take the airlines, they have decision matrices that put a price on the passengers all being lost in a crash vs. having to modify the complete aircraft fleet for some sort of safety modification. Cheaper to pay out the lawsuits of the lost aircraft than modify the fleet.
Me too and yes money in the bank is peace of mind. However, accomplishing that is often a choice between consumption or foregoing it. I'm of the latter mindset after having spent time being of the former. I just think that the limits of what one will do for money are often of function of positioning oneself to have a different sort of relationship with money as far as why you need it. Our photographer friend had no such honorable intentions and for whatever he got, I can't imagine that he's content---at least he won't be in the long-termpleasefixitup wrote:Not having money makes me go crazy. Let me clarify something I said. When I say less is more, I mean spend less. My goal isn't to make less per se, but it certainly is to spend less and need less.pleasefixitup wrote:Not having money makes me go crazy. Actually, you can lie between the tracks and have the train go over you. No, I wouldn't want to test this to find out but Wesley Autrey did.Mike W. wrote:I've long heard you can lie between the tracks and not be injured, but a subway with a third rail probably not.
It's the same in the NYC Subway.tsmall07 wrote:In DC's metro system, the third rail is outside of the 2 and is on the far side from the platform.BDK wrote: I don't know where the 3rd rail is located in reference to two rails.

the thing about my father is....well he's a scary human being.
Telling him that he made a mistake could get a wrench thrown at you.
He's a great man, but a scary man. I did break one of his jackstands this month...my excuse was, "it was a piece of crap dad!" it still works, just one of the pistons sticks.

How much time elapsed between the guy getting getting pushed off the platform and the train hitting him? Was there time for the crowd to come to his aid? 2 guys could have had him lifted up and out in 2secs.
