If the main is off, the line can't be backfed, and the panel can't be double fed.
But hey, transfer switches have their place if its a common occurence.
That's OK, it likely won't be you or your family that gets lit up, just someone else.

Well. Um, . . .yeah. That is quite a little storm surge we got going here at the beach today. High lunar tide a little while ago didn't help much either. You guys in NYC are in for a mess.

No one can get lit up. The main breaker is off. that means no one can get lit up. By turning the main off, my generator CAN NOT back feed the utility. It is the same thing as a transfer switch. I am an electrician, I do PGE tie ins all the time. I don't want to see anyone hurt, I wouldn't put someone in harms way.
:brickwall:

/hijack, sorry.

Anyhow, good luck to you folks out there, hope everyone makes it through ok!

+1, That's just stupid to see some one risk the crews lives by sailing that into a Hurricane. :x

Predicted rainfall amounts for my area have been cut in half since yesterday. The wind is here and will likely cause problems, and the storm surge along Long Island Sound and NJ is still looking to be horrendous.

Exactly. Even a lockout is much better. You do use them don't you?

We just lost power. It's flickered on and off a couple times. Hopefully it doesn't stay off too long...

Sandy is going to mess up Halloween trick or treat festivities here in Southern Ontario.

Halloween is my favorite time of the year and even tops Christmas. :(

Power is back on. We were without for almost 1.5 hours. We nearly didn't make it. Shannon was about to have me start cleaning!

Dude, you're newlyweds, with a whole house full of rooms to christen.

Oldskool is going to be so disappointed in you.

It's getting pretty breezy here. It's not going to be a rain event for us. My cousin has a small house on the sound in City Island (Bronx) across from Kings Point. It's going to flood for sure. Hopefully it doesn't get swept into the sound. :bawl:

I was willing to give them the benifit of the doubt because sometimes you just get caught out when the nasty shit hits. From what I've read these guys were in port in Connecticut when the hurricane was over Cuba and decided to leave for Florida anyway. I woud have jumped ship I think.

I'm surprised that there was already enough surge to snap that finger off.
At least the boat wasn't damaged or worse that you were out in open ocean. There's no more miserable place than a small boat in heavy seas and high wind.
I'm sorry I mislead you all, it's not gone, it's just under water. If it was gone my boat would be all kinds of goofed up
So how do you judge how much slack to leave so your boat doesn't get dragged down or snap the ropes? Do you have to go back as soon as the surge subsides to tighten the lines or will the marina do that?
I just loosen them all more than usual and I rearrange them so they run at low angles from front to back, that way whey can move up and down more. I think the marina will adjust them if they get way crazy, I saw them adding lines to another boat yesterday.
I tie the line on the piling up as high as I cam, then adjust the lines until the boat can't be pulled within 2' of any dock or piling. Depending on which way the wind will be coming from, I'll run 1 or 2 exra spring lines. We'll have lines on every cleat and winch on the damn boat. 1 Hurricane and numerous tropical storms and frontal passages, no problems.

It's nice that your marina tends to others boats. I see some boats at our marina where the owners do nothing. Those are the boats that damage other boats when they get free. Happened in Katrina to a friend that lost his perfect Freres 38 to his neighbors boat being unsuitably moored. Sucks. Our neighbors boat was unsuitably moored for Isaac, but he only hurt himself. The bow plowing into a concrete pier for hours is not pretty. I thought I had a picture of it. I'll keep looking.

I've heard there are spike of birth rates approximately 9 months after hurricanes.

Never have needed to. I don't get to do much comm'l work, and residences its unnecessary. Everything gets treated as if it's hot. I've even found myself checking wires when the service is laying on the ground awaiting install and the pge wires are capped off on the roof.

If I'm worried about it, I'll pull the wire off the breaker.

Bummer.

The body of one of two missing crewmembers, Claudene Christian, was found Monday evening, the Coast Guard reported. The 63-year-old captain, Robin Walbridge, is still missing.

Sad story. A brave captain. Aside from even being out there, he didn't abandon the ship before the others. Unlike a certain Italian captain. Lets hope he survives.
