VIN WBSDC9301J2791453 has become the ninth known North American spec E28 M5 that will be completely destroyed in July 2012. 2791453 was listed sometime ago by the previous owner and the new owner, who seems to be well intentioned, is attempting to sell the car again. I cannot recall a single month where as many M5 examples have been destroyed since I began tracking them all.

I hope these parts are transferred to an North American spec M5 chassis and NOT into another BMW model for a "project."
Best,

Price might be a bit high considering it's an automatic, but it looks well cared for.

Here's an e12 that just popped up in my neck of the woods. A friend is thinking about it, but he's not exactly known for making quick decisions. At that price I'd love to buy it, but given my current stock of old cars, I'd probably be sleeping in it, so it's not happening. :sigh:

Did they really sell these cars with an optional right-side mirror?
http://sd.craigslist.org/cto/3169112756.html
My buddy lives across the street from the seller and has talked with him about the car a bit; says the seller told him it leaks a little around the sunroof (plugged drains?) and has some "other issues" but runs and drives.1979 BMW 528i - $1500 (Sioux Falls,SD)

The BMW 8 Series (chassis code BMW E31) is a V8 or V12-engined 2-door 2+2 coupe built by BMW from 1989 to 1999 with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h), although with the limiters removed top speed was estimated at 186 mph (299 km/h). A common misconception is that the 8 Series was developed as a successor to the original BMW 6 Series in 1989; it was actually an entirely new class aimed at a different market with a substantially higher price point. A new 8 Series cost around US$100,000.
Worldwide production ceased May 12, 1999, with a total of 30,621 built during the 10 year production run.
Design and Research History of the BMW 8-Series
Design of the 8-Series began in 1984, with construction starting in 1986. The 8-Series debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in early September 1989. The 8 Series was designed to move beyond the market of the original 6 Series. The 8 and 6 Series cars were distinctly different in design and performance; while the 6 Series was a solid Grand Touring car, the 8 Series was designed as a direct competitor to the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. The 8-Series was BMW's flagship car while in production.
Over 1.5 billion Deutschmark was spent on total development (2005 USD $2.2 billion). BMW used CAD tools, still unusual at the time, to design the car's all-new body. Combined with wind tunnel testing, the resulting car had a drag coefficient of 0.29, a major improvement from the previous BMW M6/635CSi's 0.39.
The 8-Series offered the first V12 engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox on a road car. It was also the first vehicle with an electronic "fly-by-wire" throttle. The 8-Series was one of BMW's first cars, together with the Z1, to use a a multi-link rear axle.
While CAD modeling allowed the car's unibody to be 8 lb (3 kg) lighter than that of its predecessor, the car was significantly heavier when completed due to the large engine and added luxury items--a source of criticism from those who wanted BMW to concentrate on the driving experience.
Sales of the 8-Series were affected by the global recession of the early 1990s, the Persian Gulf War, and energy price spikes. BMW pulled the 8-Series out of the North American market in 1997, selling only 7,232 cars over seven years. BMW continued production for Europe until 1999, though only as the 840Ci. The ultimate worldwide production total was 30,621.

All I can say is it's a good thing the red car isn't the one with the 6-speed or I'd be mortgaging my house to buy it. That is one sexy car, and with three pedals it would be near irresistable. This very rare BMW was an ultra low factory production vehicle that is fully loaded and has the newly improved (in 1996) and more desirable ultra-smooth M62 4.4 liter, 282 hp V8 engine which had both better fuel economy and more torque than the previous 1994 and 1995 model year 840ci's and with none of the downsides associated with the factory recalls with the earlier model years, specifically having to do with the defect in the old (1994 and 1995) M60 Nikasil coated V8 engines and which was resolved in the 1996 and 1997 model years with the introduction of the new and improved M62 Alusil coated V8 engines.
This 1997 BMW 840ci also includes the very rare and highly desirable 5 speed steptronic (+ or - shifting) automatic transmission that can be driven either as an automatic or shifted auto-manually when you happen to be in the mood for a change of driving pace.
The car is completely stock with the exception of the 19" Stern Hyper Silver ST-2 Sport Wheels and a Xenon HID Headlight Upgrade.
The top speed is an electronically factory limited 155 mph with no modification but still gets an honest and economical 24 MPG on the highway when cruising at 65 mph.
Only rarely will you ever actually see an 8 Series model on the street anywhere in the entire USA. So in addition to how much fun the 840ci is to drive, this is one of those special exotic sport coupes that, because of it's rarity, always gets a lot of attention via looks, questions, and admiring comments wherever you happen to go. This can be one of the enjoyable and intriguing parts about owning such a beautiful and rare specimen of an automobile like the 840ci !

If you wish, you can click on the link below to learn a little more about this very rare and interesting collector BMW - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_8_Series
The following is a small sampling of information that can be found on the Wikipedia web page that is devoted exclusively to the BMW 8-Series coupe.
The BMW 8 Series was BMW's flagship car while in production. Accounting for inflation, a new model cost above $110,000 and had an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Although with the limiters removed, the top speed was estimated at 186 mph (299 km/h). Worldwide production ceased on May 12, 1999, with 30,621 built. And of this total there were only 4,782 of the (V12) 850i, 850ci, 850csi models and just 2,450 of the (V8 ) 840ci models were delivered to North America.
If you should have any specific questions or concern, just send me a quick email or give me a phone call.
