Made some improvements to the cooling system as it wasn't optimized and the car ran warmer than I wanted when it's 85+F.

Installed a 2nd electric fan, built a shroud for the top and bottom and installed a proper expansion tank. The shroud is temporary and will be replaced with something more elegant during a trip to Sweeney's.

I have also decided to leave the boost level alone. 7-7.5psi is plenty (~475rwhp). I am going to play around with power delivery with the boost controller, a smaller exh housing if necessary and possibly 373lsd instead of the 346lsd.

I need a little more low end tq.

That's sucks man but you got to keep the engine sorta
reliable. Can't be pushing limits on an expensive build.

There is less than $1750 in the entire motor and the shortblock can be replaced for $7-800 easily.

I have decided to refine the entire package instead of just cranking up the boost.

In my experience; turning up boost was easily accomplished within the first 2 months, refining the package has been an 6 year ongoing process.

I agree but the chassis is already sorted out. The tune on the engine is really good. Mostly need to refine the power delivery which should not be that difficult.

Update

Thankfully moving back to Milwaukee in 4 weeks! Cannot wait to get back to the land of nice people, good football, great beer, great weather and convenient drag strip.

Drove to TedFest. Was a great event as usual. Gave Ted a ride in the car which resulted in a noisy rod.

Not a complete surprise considering the engine went abt 45 seconds without oil pressure during one of the first drives. Don't know what caused it and it never happened again but obviously caused bearing damage.

Faced with a big $$ tow back to NYC, I treated the car nicely and drove it home. Couldn't hear any knocking with the windows down at 70mph.

Some good news. Cooling system is working great! Temps never exceeded 195F while waiting 20+ minutes at the border. MPG was 26.7 for the hwy portion of the trip.

I spent a week researching what to do for another motor and decided on something a little different. Shortblock was ordered yesterday.

aluminum block
manley oil pump
83mm crank
99mm bore
forged pistons
9.5CR

313ci of high revving V8. Peak HP will be abt 6500rpm with a 7000rpm redline.

Also going to have my heads rebuilt and CNC ported. Install scheduled for late Sept.

Thats good news, is your wife retiring?

45 seconds!!!! You really need to find that issue as if it happens again, another toasted engine. My engine did not like Ted Fest either.....think it is those guys that their heads bobble when they talk.

Made a final trip to Sweeney's today where we gutted an instrument cluster and made a panel to accept new gauges. Still finish work to do but the important stuff is done.

i did one for my 81 633 with autometer ultralite's, since then they have better fuel gauge's that can adapt to the sender in the car, don't be tempted by the ford unit if you see one listed, the range is almost perfect for the bmw sender at 12-75 ohm but from 50 on it reads empty on a ford gauge where the bmw unit reads the whole range
id post a pic of it but the hosting site its on has been down a week or two, tach and speedo on the outside and 4 in the middle in a square, make sure you have a large enough bulb to trigger the field in the alternator as a battery light, i used a small dome light assy taped up and outta sight behind the cluster parallel with the indicator (so all of the indicator lights would match and i wouldn't have one huge one)
