Right Overhaulin doesn't promise, that your car will be drivable for up to a year.
Now for the sake of completing the thought he goes on to say, having a "show quality car finished in 7 days" I would agree, it is not 100% show quality, but dam close. My 72 Challenger turns heads, has won several shows and lost a few too because it is not 100% show quality, plus it is not a trailer queen as alot of people are amazed, I use the car all the time to run errands and drive to shows. As we know that will cause some battle scars. The car would have been finsihed in 4 days, though they stretched it out because they had to do it infront of a live audience at Sema. On the show, Chip gets in and does a burn out in my car, yes 7 days to moment from when they stole my car. Because of the very legal system and everyone is sue happy, they take the car for a safety check, back to California and it can take 2 weeks to 4 months to go over the whole car. My car took 4 months and I will say the idiot they hired, was just that. The car was worst off, then when he got it. He got paid big bucks to safety check the car,but I had to fix things, he broke, not the show. I could have drove the car away from sema, but I am sure the shows insurance company demands someone else look at the car and sign off. Funny thing, I had to sign off, if there was anything wrong with the car, after the "safety" check I could not bring legal action.

Beautiful car! Congrats!

Can someone please put the exclusivity of this car into perspective for those of us (me) who don't know? how rare this car? Specs?

Greatly faster than an M5? Marginally? Comparable?

I don't know how many Hartge H5S there are in the country, but from my research, there are around 5, Adrians, Justins, Treys, mine, and there is one rumored in Texas. It has approximately 240hp, close ratio 5 speed, 3:25 LSD, and proprietary springs, sway bars, head, headers, stripes, wheels, spoilers, and instrument cluster on the dash parcel tray. I don't really know if it will beat an M5, but it will definately stay with it in every respect. For the guy who wants M5 performance and doesn't want the M5, it is a great alternative.

Thank all of you for your support and kind words about this car, I really appreciate the enthusiasm from this group...not to mention all of the help that was dedicated to getting the car on the road to Monterey (I will start a seperate thread on this).

I was also approached by a magazine editor at the show, so look for the car in an upcoming issue dedicated to BMWs! :D

Congratulations Ron on another "over the top" example of a VERY rare E28 !!

Following are some spec's for comparison.

Hartge H5S - US version
240 bhp @ 5900 upm
335 Nm bei @ 4100 upm
max speed 230 kph
0-60 mph 6.5 sec. (extrapolated)
0-100 kph 6.8 sec. (actual)

E28M5 - US version
252 bhp @ 6500 rpm
243 ft/lbs @ 4500 rpm
max speed 238 kph
0-60 mph 6.5 sec. (actual)
0-100 kph 6.8 sec. (extrapolated)

Bhp, max speed & 0-60 mph (0-100 kph) compare apples to apples. As you can see both engines appear very close to each other in these specs. Acceleration times are identical. Torque specs are in different measuring units (nm bei vs. ft/lbs) & will not make a valid comparision.

sources - 1985 Hartge specifications brochure, E28M5 Registry.

There is no comparision, a tuned M30 will make much more torque than the US M5 engine.

No, I did that long ago when our eyes locked on for quite an awkward time and then we were introduced.

Actually there is an excellent comparison: 335 Nm = 247 ft-lbs.

:alright: Congratulations to you Ron and your Team.

The amount of time/effort/patience placed toward this rare specimen is incredible. The outcome clearly shows this and the award received is well deserved.

Well done to everyone involved!

I swapped the Sony unit for a Blaupunkt that was in the e30 M3 I just finished the resto on. It works great, but still needs the antenna hooked up. I took out about a mile of wiring from previous stereo systems.

Don't forget the rear ashtrays in the door caps. BOTH 1st and 2nd place cars in the concours were sporting a leather dash, gauge pod, door caps AND leather ashtrays. You've got to be hardcore to place in events like these, and that's just the tip of the iceburg.

So, um, if I like put in a brand new BMW dash, that's not hardcore? I've got to cover everything in cow that wasn't in cow before to be hardcore?

Uh, like, yeah. That's kinda da point. If u b gots to be askin u b neva noin.

You'll be hardcore if you manage to get a dash installed by yourself without removing the steering wheel or windshield and without dropping a single f-bomb or calling it a POS. Oh, and you can't crack it again in the process. Leather is the way, plastic sux. :D
