So, i Finally got 'round to installing the voltmeter! It looks great (could easily be mistaken for an OEM part), and works fantastically well.
Instillation is fairly routine for anyone that knows an inline fuse from a hole in wall, and took me about an hour (not counting a trip to the hardware store for a ratchet to replace the one I'd lost. Oh, yeah... guess what I found when I got home from the hardware store?).
You will need a few bits 'n bobs that are not included with the meter, such as wire taps (or, if you are anal like me, solder, a soldering iron, and some heat shrink tubing -- I chose to tap the ACC line on my Pioneer head unit harness, rather than 30 year old German wiring), and an inline fuse (safety third!).
Anyway, here is what it looks like installed:
... and with the engine idling, I get a healthy four bars (~13v):
This is an awesome product. It looks great in the e28 blending right into the interior, and seamlessly adds the one instrument that should have been in the car from the factory.
(this is not doing my back any good. I have got to get a new hobby.)
