I think the HB (yes, many etas had em) would make scraping noises rather than thumping noises. Not to mention he mentioned middle-rear, not up toward the front (where the driveshaft would meet the output of the tranny).
Whatever, YMMV. When the balancer went on my E28, it made a thumping noise. No scraping. When the thumping is intermittent, it's hard to tell where it's coming from.

You said five bolts, that's just for the diff mount. Bentley says also remove the front and side bolts and disconnect the sensor - I understand you didn't do that, and the sky didn't come crashing down?
Trying this (five bolt) version now, hope it works.
Update: Yes, it works. And yes, it's the diff mount this time. Thanks everyone for words of wisdom.
