When you figure it out, let me know. I've always wanted to own an M5.

It's really easy. Just register any car on there. Pick a VIN that isn't there. Say it's yours. Not hard.

WBSDC9307J2791004 would put you at the top of the list.

I'm hiding about a third of the way down the list.

1004 would put me there actually. ;)

Yeah but not as clever as Roy W. or Tammer, somehow they've figured out how to own, or at least register, two (2) E28 M5s.
:bawl: That's just so unfair. :bawl:
How can we change that.

If Opus really owns this particular M5 it must be a royal pain to start cold and probably doesn't idle too well. It supposedly has an M88/3 Motronic, yet it's a US/NA spec M5. Considering the fact that the M88/3 Motronic doesn't support cold start enrichment nor have the circuitry to control an ICV, this thing must be a real hassle to deal with when it's cold. As far as idle is concerned I guess a person could simply adjust the idle stop. I also wonder how well it runs, considering the programming isn't well suited for the US S38 engine. Finally, I surely hope he doesn't have to pass SMOG where he's located. The M88/3 Motronic doesn't support an O2 sensor and the fuel maps are far to rich.

"If" ? seriously, I own the car, this is the 5th time it's been questioned...really, It's mine.

And yea, you definetly know a lot about it, it's a pain in the ass to drive when it's cold, that's why i planned on having it in the shop for months with a long list of fixes and modifications, don't want to waste my time in this cold ohio weather. And it's going straight into storage when the work is done, till this annoying snow stops falling and the weather heats up a bit. Even when it's warm out, i have to let it idle for a good 2 min or about 1 min if i rev it up a little.

Also you called the smog test issues, i don't have to get it tested here luckily, but the original owner told me a few tricks to make it BARELY pass....but i forgot what he said, i guess when the time comes i'll be back on these forums asking how I can A)bribe a smog tester or B) get it to pass.

But what do you suggest for fixing or at least improving the cold start and idling issues? Once it's warmed up the idling is perfect, but it gets bad durring stop and go traffic.

First thing determine what engine is installed. Easiest way, look at the location of the oil fill cap on the valve cover. If it's directly over the timing chain you have the S38b35 engine. If you have the S38b35 engine you should confirm the correct Motronic ECU is installed. There are subtle, yet significant differences between the two ECUs which will really mess with cold start, idle, emissions and drivability.

If you find you have a US/NA engine with a Euro ECU, replace the ECU. The reason you want the correct ECU is because the S38b35 engine does not have a cold start injector. The ECU controls this by lengthening the injector pulse width during cold start. The other reasons involve idle control, and emissions. The Euro ECU does not provide any control over either of these functions.

If you find a previous owner replaced the original engine with a Euro M88/3 engine. Then you'll need to have it professionally tuned, then learn to live with the cold blooded nature of the Euro engine.
