As an experienced aircraft mechanic I've seen those "landing lights" (in the navy they are "taxi lights"). THEY ARE BRIGHT AS HELL!! You're going to do a number of things:

a. blind the shit out of someone
b. be a prime target for drunk drivers
c. roast your electrical system
d. turn your grills into butter
e. the Navy called, they want there F-14 taxi lights back....

f. see into people's souls
g. leave shadows of all of Europe and most of Asia on the Great Wall when driving east

Hmm, 500 watts of lights at 12 volts.

500 / 12 = 41.66 Amps on at the best 90 amp alternator.

As long as he doesn't have a big stereo going as well as heated seats, rear defroster, and the heater on high he should be ok.

I had 800 watts of stereo in my car and the alternator took it just fine. Mind you I had a 1 farad capacitor to eat any spikes.

Those lights are going to draw a crap load of current when they are starting up. As long as the wiring is the gauge he says it is he should do alright.

I would have wired it through a pair of 30 amp relays connected to the high beam circuit though.

Oh, make sure your grounds are in PERFECT order or the lams wont last very long.

One last thought, make sure you are doing at least 50 MPH when using them or else they are probably going to melt your grills from the heat.

When they are installed into airplanes they are installed into metal casings for a reason.

Alright well i tried to get good pics but for some reason the camera wasnt up to it.
Anyway, you can see the lights on a flat road about 3 miles away starting and the beam projects its light throw about a mile in length, about 40 feet high, and is like a giant beam right in front of the car.
These pics suck but its good how it shows only the brightest light. Again not the best pics but ill try to get some where it shows all the lighting available.
Now to get HIDs for the H4 housings....

I thought I'd weigh in on this... Coming from Northern Alberta, where during the fall/winter seasons its -10 to -40celcius
and there are:

Deer, Elk, Moose, Bison, Cows, horses, moutaingoats, and that rabbit from monty python on the road...

I'd love a set of these for my 8 hour long drives in the dead of night to northern alberta and through some of the most desolate highways you've ever seen Light is your friend.


Problem is I now live in a city of a million people, and i can already see the police helicopter landing on my car, dropping a hook and airlifting me to prison after I fire those 250watt bastards at some slowpoke on the deerfoot.

I love these lights though and I wanna know where you got them.. I already have the 140amp alternator, and the electrical wiring skills. I would think that you would want to use TWO heavy duty relays, one for each light?

*edit* i just saw your diagram good stuff. One thing I would want to do is find a way to install breakers on the B+ wires that head over to the batt... That's just me being fire-safe though. I'm not sure. Yeah. They make breakers that would work.

Perhaps hes switching the relay from his fog light circuit... but as the fogs are relayed it'll be receiving a large current from the fogs and melt the relay...

Nope. The relay won't be "receiving a large current" as it won't be drawing a large current on the coil.

You jsut have to make sure the high current part of the relay is rated appropriately and you'll be fine..

I actually just sold Slash02 the lights from my car when i posted these on the other board. Should be there by Tuesday, Wednesday!

I used two relays rated for 50A each, along with 10 gauge wiring, and 4 gauge from the battery straight to the standalone fuseblock, and crimp connectors. Had i the skill and the gun, i would have soldered the connectors instead of using the crappy crimp ones

UPDATE!

Installed a set of 450w general electric landing lamps, as many of my fans (you guys) know i had installed a set of 250w ones last year and made their debut at 5erfest.


I wired them up using the same 50A relays, the same standalone fuse block and 30A relays, 6 gauge wiring for power in, switch, ground, and power out, as well as grounding the lamps. 4 gauge for the battery to fuseblock.

With all four lights on im drawing a respectable 82~ amps

Will get better pics tomorrow as my batteries died and need adjust the lamps, which is impossible unless the lamps have been off as you can feel the head of the lamp about 50 feet away

You can see how they outshine the 100w lowbeam H4s and make them look not even visible, and light up the entire garage door.

As you can tell, my photography skills have increased ten fold since last time!
