JGoodwill,
Excellent information to have on hand re: picture resolution. Given your line of work, I nominate you as our print consultant

Personally, I couldn't care less if my personal e28 is in the calendar. There are well-known, pristine examples in the e28 community that could be nominated or if available photos could be posted in the "calendar thread" (sticky). Many of these cars have been showcased as exemplars at 5erFests.
In fact, there may be high-res photos available of many of these cars because they were displayed. Just a suggestion... :dunno:

Best,

I did a calendar for the local chevy club about 4 years ago.

With all the pics I had to choose from I decided to put smaller inset pics in a panel along side of the main pic. The verticle panel alongside the main pic doubles as info space for owners name and car data. The small pic can be a of car not chosen for the main pic of a month, this way more cars and owners can get their car onto the calendar.

Just think.....12 months and 24 cars to gawk at!

This will be awesome... Off hand I can think of a few that I've seen in the Eye Candy forum that should make the cut, the one's that just made me drool....

I personally hope the price doesn't exceed $10, because I am also living in the 60's like daka even though I wasn't even an inkling of a thought in that era.... I am definately a poor struggling college student who is excited when I see a cheap price though.... I would still buy it for $20 though just because I think it'd be worth it!!

I just gave all Bfons (Brians) info to Booker, so he's going to get in contact and see what we can do to iron out the logistics and get the ball rolling. Brian's been putting together the E24 calendars for years and they look great + make a profit for the Sharkfests. IIRC they run 20.00.

Some things to consider.....

The design, layout and retouches will take a couple of weeks after the images are chosen. Considering Holiday vacations, scheduling and production could take another couple of weeks- easily. Also, time needs to be given for pre-orders.

Due to these factors, a photo entry/pre-order deadline should be posted asap. Pre-orders will be a great help in determining the final production quantities- it also would not be a bad idea to require a minimum quantity of pre-orders before any (press) production begins- this would secure any required deposit and/or keep any particular person from being responsible for the bill.

Considering the above, we could be looking at the end of Jan. before the calendars would be in-hand if the photo deadlines were set for 12/18. It's very short notice, but it would give everyone a chance to get some shots over the weekend. Pre-orders could be received as late as 12/29- this would give some time for the retouches and layout to be finished.

These guestimates are based on my experience with offset printing- digital is a different story.

OK, guys. I have spoken with Brian, and we may be able to get this thing off the ground. User submissions go in this thread in eye candy. Please carefully read the instructions.

Now we need a show of hands of who will buy them. Pricing will be around $20.

What are the deadlines and the final size of the calendar? Does the image need to be 300dpi @ 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, etc.- this makes a huge difference in the finished piece- moreso than unwanted background objects- those can be 'shopped (Patrick McHugh's car below). The file sizes for these images are gonna be (or should be) much larger than 5 megs- probably 20 and up- too large to email or post on a thread. An ftp site would be ideal for the hi-res versions- a low res copy should be posted in the thread along with the specs of the hi-res.

From a production standpoint- what is the printing method, how are they bound (Wiro, saddle, etc.), what is the stock weight (80#, 100#, etc.), aqueous or uv coated??? These are all significant pricing factors. Just curious....

Brian handles the printing. He has done a few of these, so he knows what he is doing. There is a link in one of his posts showing his work.

We just need to supply him with 12-13 good photos.

Deadlines are still being worked on. This is what, the second day this idea has been around?

Mines not great, but thought I'd throw it out there, hope I don't violate any of the rules including - Shot at at least 300dpi, At least 5 meg in size, Good lighting and focus, and Good composition but I am not a pro and don't know what half that stuff means or what will exactly qualify.. Let me know if it should be posted on the sticky!!

Image

And the one below could be a cool little picture to have in a corner of a page... That is if the idea for 2 pictures per each page/month is enacted...

I know its not a glourious shot, I just love how it looks like the only cars in an every day scenario are e28's

Yeah; well, I didn't compose that shot!
The second picture is much better and might take to some cropping.
Image

I s'pose the corner workers might not mind having a tree mysteriously fall in front of 'em. Or maybe we could Photoshop a rapt expression onto Jeremy so it doesn't look as much like he's counting his shoelaces.

I liked these two mostly because of the attitude of the car and, frankly, until you pointed it out, I'd never noticed I had 'passengers' in that first one. I know I never saw the 'lounger'. The second one, with the few stickons and the number in the window make clear what was going on and I think I like it better for that reason. It has some other things I'd probably edit out if I were trying to make it 'perfect'. There's a cable to my temp sensor hanging under the airdam. There are tape/adhesive scraps in my windshield from racetrack parking passes. There are white shoulder markers on my tire (I use them!). One could even wipe the stickers from the fenders with a few color grafts, but then it isn't 'real'. All these things make it a competition action shot and I think it's a good one.

Of course, I'm a big racing fan and participant. I've got an SCCA calendar hanging next to my desk and virtually all of the shots in it show similar 'errors' of composition or background (January has a BMW 'impaled' in the roof by a Sunoco arrow!), but that's how competition shots must be made. They can't be posed. If it's purely a beauty contest, then I agree with you and Da Red Dog would never make even the first cut. But if the consensus is that we'd like to see E28s doing all the things they do so well, then this (or something like it) would be my pick - for at least one lousy month of the year. ;)

Yeah, I agree with you CR. You can't really choose your backgrounds for these action-type pictures. It really depends on the person making the editing decisions. For posed pictures, mistakes really can't be tolerated. Actions shots with a car in a non-goofy looking moment are always fun to look at. My auto-x pictures at the Tirerack are much better compared to '05 at the Zentrum, which the great majority are cluttered and capture odd moments.

Narrowed my shots down to about 50 possible pictures but even then half of those really aren't up to my standards. Going through some of the pictures, I do wish people would clean their windows, remove electronic toll devices, radar detector suction mounts, etc. Amazing how many cars have streaked and smeared windshields. Dirty glass drives me nuts. Especially since the camera captures all!

I'm not questioning anyones knowledge or capability, just curious about the specs- as most end-users are.

There is a link in one of his posts showing his work.
No disrespect, but you can't judge the print quality on a monitor.

We just need to supply him with 12-13 good photos. Deadlines are still being worked on. This is what, the second day this idea has been around?
Yes, and it is already Dec 15. Generally the printer provides those deadlines- you work backwards from the delivery date. I do this everyday- plan, design, and oversee the production and distribution of printed materials for a major men's apparel designer, Image so I know the process all-too-well.

Sorry... just tryin' to lend a free hand in a couple of areas that I'm familiar with.

I am in as well. I sent Brian some high res pics for his last attempt and never heard back from him. I know he gets swamped from time to time, but if this can get off the ground I have some great professional photos of my car that we took for Bimmer and Roundel that were not used.

Here is one:

Here's a thought if getting a 2007 calendar ready is going to take awhile.

Start by getting as many quality pics together, then do a 15 or 16 month calendar for 2008 and have them ready for distribution by August 2007.

That should give you plenty of time to get enough hi-res pics to use. Plus, it'll give those living in snowy climates time to take pics in spring and still make the calendar. I am sure some have stored their cars for the winter.

Put me on the list of orders for at least one calendar, possibly more. I have a few E24 friends that I am trying to talk them into getting an E28.....right Brian (bfons)?

I too like the idea of having a ~18-month calendar for our initial "mye28.com" calendar.

Not sure if this has been posted up above...didn't take the time to look...but the e38.org guys on Bimmerboard made up a calendar for 2007...cost is $24.95 each which, to be honest, is a little more than I like to spend on my calendars. However, to put it into perspective, these are low production printings which drives up the cost. Also, fwiw, the factory Porsche calendar (with medallion) is something likr $75USD now from what I recall.

Cheers and TIA,

Cool idea.

I will buy a calender and will pay right now if it helps get it off the ground.

Roy-W has given an idea which i think is good..

Dont limit the photos to Just photos of E28 cars.

Nice under the Hood shots...even immaclute interiors or Turbo Engines IMHO are a good mix and would work very well.

Prehaps even Months were there is photos of all 3 from the same car if applicable.

That top pic is excellent - sorry I haven't been on this thread - once 5erFest is in the bag I believe we'll have even more pics to go through.

Apologies for neglecting the effort; the Help-a-Brother Drive, getting ready for 5erFest, and the business have kept me hopping. :nopity:

This summer we should all be able to focus our collective efforts on putting a polished calendar together - and I'm talking about a SUPERIOR product.

We'll get it done - thanks!
