I thought I'd ad my two cents as an E46 M3 owner and E28 afficionado.

Although I drive an E46 M3, I still have a great affinity for the E28, particularly the M5 and tuner cars. I haven't owned one yet, but I have come close on several occasions. I am currently shopping the E28 M5 market as well as considering other interesting E28s, including a local Harge H5 clone for sale on this board. For me, the E28 is from a golden era of BMW.

Admittedly, I am perhaps not the typical E46 M3 owner, but I will say that there are quite a few E46 M3s in my BMW CCA chapter and the surrounding chapters regularly seen at the track events.

A friend of mine is the head mechanic at a porsche dealership and loves my car. He has pretty much driven everything except for the new Ford GT. In his words he said he "needs to wait till someone trades one in and show that whore who is the boss". Anyway, he was saying he remembered when the e28 M5s came out and the handling and performance was wayy ahead of its time. But I think you have to remember that BMW is a company that requires sales to stay around. So yea they probably sell M3 to dicks, but I'm sure when the e28 was brand new a few dicks bought it and then sold it to people like us. For some people a car is a car, for others it's a status symbol, and for me it's whole lot of things. So yea when you get a rude stare like that from another driver, just pull a James Bond and throw out the oil slick or rocket launchers.

I do biomed research at a private medical institution, and I got to the track whenever I can afford to (which isn't often enough). I have met many cool E46 M3 drivers at the track, and they're just like every other Bimmerhead, out there trying to drive the wheels off their cars. But on campus, I see a bunch of 19-y-o silver-spooners with their slammed M3 competition packages and 'verts, or Audi S4s, or (a new one this month on my commute by the student apartments) a Charger SRT-8 ... and I'm thinking, the folks at the track *are* the minority. Most drivers of all cars at that price point/level of flashiness--not just BMWs--just aren't that cool. They want to look cool, and they think a cool car will get them attention, but whatever. I'm glad there are people around here who have late-model M3s and know what do do with them!

So tonight I drove the E12 to make a run to Blockbuster video. Of course I took the long way to get a 15 minute drive in. On the way back heading to the movie place, I spot a black E46 M3 convertible, the top is down, and it has the 19" factory wheel option. There's a guy, probably late 40's or early 50's, heavy-set, with what appears to his two teenage daughters in the car with him. It was a nice, low 60-degree Fall day today and it was about an hour before sundown.

I pull up next to him at a light and give him a very pronounced nod, from one M-car guy to the next, right? Blank stare, almost a "You LOOKIN' at ME?" stare. I pull up a bit more and see him checking out my car in the rearview (or sizing it up).

We proceed on the green signal but then we get caught a few lights later, only this time right next to each other. I look over (he's on my right) and he won't look at me through a fairly long light. Fine, I get the hint. He makes a right coming up and I notice we have the same "///M" license plate bracket even.

So the question is, did he think I was giving the nod at his daughters and took offense? Was my old, tired BMW not worthy of his $60K M3 convertible? Was he just too bored to care?

I guess this is the inevitable consequence of M-car production where BMW makes and sells as many as it possibly can, even offering incentives and leases to move them. You would think if you got an M3 you would know what 333hp under your right foot was all about and the M brand at least. But I suppose there are those that just bought it because it was the most expensive.

If you had some balls and actually went WOT in your car every now and then he may have given you some respect.

Of course I know you C.R. You were my instructor in the NSX at O-Fast in 2003. I am on the board and we share the same profession.

I almost bought Jerry's M5. I had it in my possession for a week, but he wouldn't move on the price after I had the car inspected and it needed a bit of work, so I passed. I think he sold it to someone else, as it is no longer on Autotrader, but I don't know for sure.

I may wait until Spring to start looking an E28 M5s again, as it just doesn't make much sense to buy one now to store over the winter.

Dunno if you're shopping for a very good, clean driver or a low-mile pristine garage queen. If it's the former, check the For Sale board for my car. If it's the latter, post pics when you get it! ;-)

I have seen your ad and your car is a possibility. The distance makes for some logistical difficulty in viewing/driving/inspecting the car. If I do decide to pursue an E28 this fall, I may well contact you about your car.

When I deem that the oil temps have reached operating temperature, I do flog the M535i more than is usually legal on the roads around here. I was really pushing the old girl while exiting the highway on a nicely banked, long offramp a few weeks ago. The problem was with my friend in the passenger seat, the springs on the 2nd lowest perch in the rear, and the big 245's out back I got some nice rubbing up inside the fender wells from the exercise (and the associated smell of burnt rubber). I need stiffer springs apparently to run the car this low.

If I had posted about doing a standing burnout next to the E46 M3 convertible driver (I hate the term "vert" by the way) some people probably would have criticized me as a punk trying to instigate a race.

Why don't you tell me what I should do next time that would meet with your approval, Todd?

sunday, after a much needed drive from san diego to the arizona border ( italianis tune-uppitus)..........i chanced upon a spanking brand new, plateless 335i piloted by what seems to appears to have been the poster child from gq magazine.

i was sincere in the thumbs up i gave the driver of this new techno wonder,...........apparently by the "bile in my mouth" look he gave my old 535 in return,........i had obviously offended his sense of yuppiness.

undaunted,..i turned up ac/dc's back in black and just grinned. this must have surely rankled this well to do " i drive a newwwwwww bmw" corporate pretty boy.

so much so...that i distinctly heard the muted whooooooosh, whooooooooosh of his challenging rev's being thrown at me.

considering this challenge briefly,.......well a nano second or so..........
i looked at/around and thru the intersection that lead onto the freeway onramp,..insuring that it was clear for the intended response.

corporate/yuppie/gq scumbag glanced once again at my old five....smiling with pre-victory confidence.( haaaaaaa,..arrogant fool)

blipping the old 5ers gas pedal..i cleared its throat...and slowly brought the revs up to about 6000rpm............

yuppie boy began paying attention.

watching the opposing lights..i anticipated the impending change to green and slooooooowly began releasing the clutch.

green light......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

firewall the pedal,....ride the fivers clutch,.........the 255s already hazing with tortured bfgoodrich molecules............

5er walking sideways as the revs stay planted at 6800rpm.........grab 2nd...........pedal still firewalled.

yuppie boy has suddenly realized what a "holeshot" is..........
new 335i spooling up and beginning to pull..........

3rd gear, still firewalled....................335is back 4 lengths

4th gear...........maaaaaaaaaaaan,,these big sixes sound sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet at redline

well onto the deserted freeway, i glance at the speedo..........deep enough into triple digits that jailtime looms in my brain.

i stab the clutch and let the 5er coast..........
yuppie boy,..now well into his boost finally blows past my now coasting 20 year old aerodynamic as a shoebox 535.........

i grin at him and wave...thumbs up for the run he gave me.

yuppie boy must not have agreed......................a one finger salute in return and off at the next ramp was his reply.

oh well.......................

Jim, I just love that you used to be a cop.

There was a 335i with temp plates on it at VIR in September, and it was quick ... and it broke. Didn't get the story but it definitely did not finish the school intact.

I'd bought a silver '87 535is on ebay just before O'Fast '03 and drove it for a scant month or so (you may recall I hadn't had any time to prep it to be on track) before stashing it in my barn for the winter. Then, in the spring, an old Northern Ohio Chapter pal of mine came up with Da Red Dog. I rolled Da Silverfish (Lachs, get it?) out on a 3-day ebay auction and moved it (no loss; no gain - perfect) to a guy who loves it and I bought the car I really wanted. 'End of season' buys can be really good here, y'know.

P.S.: Tell Joy to call me next time he's in town because he isn't gonna get a 'Big Penny' from The Penquin Drive-In. I'm doin' the bankruptcy ...

It was a nice car, but I wasn't willing to pay more than $11,500 for it given the mileage and mechanical issues. Nothing major, but few things are cheap on an E28 M5.
