"Quick" Intro - '87 EU 520i

Replacing Waterpump and doing Timing Belt on the M20 ist like a late-summer Sunday afternoon stroll, took me about two hours, with half an hour spent getting those damn crank pulley bolts started - was the first time I was actually glad to "only" have an M20 and not an M30
 
I’ve also added 5 mm spacers (not shown in the picture yet) so the wheels sit a bit more flush in the arches and some read blins as you might be able to see from the picture,  
Next week it’s off to the German TÜV to get all the weels and spacers registered in combination with the suspension, and then I should be done with the bigger jobs for this season (hopefully)

Paperwork is finally done done. It was a PITA since the inspector was really strict but I’m back on the road legally now.With the weather being really good at the moment, I went to the first general classic car meets of the season last Sunday and again today.Last week, as usual, I was the only E28 there (though there were E23, E24, E26, and of course several E30s — so the family was complete).

 


Today, however, I was genuinely surprised as there was a total of five E28s, which is pretty crazy considering the E28 isn’t really popular here in Germany

...and while im at it - i also finally constructed (recycled from other CC licensed parts) a holder for a magsafe Phone Mount (UGREEN https://www.amazon.de/UGREEN-Handyhalte ... B0FH1RBYK5 - but it should fit any ballmount phone holder with approx. 17-18mm ball diameter)

What Hp did it put down? Hard to tell in the video...

Run 1 was at 138,2PS at 6392 rpm with 171,9Nm at 5185 rpm, 
Run 2 was at 137,6PS at 6332 rpm with 173,0Nm at 5129 rpm. 

whp was around 96PS peak.

Stock is 129PS/165Nm, so quite happy with the ecu mapping and the car overall

Not bad!  So your only engine power modification is the chip from your German source?

If the chip makes the car feel more lively all over there must be improvement along the curve, and not just the peak?

Yeah, up until now I only had the chip installed, everything else was stock. The engine just starts pulling a bit earlier and not only at 4200 rpm anymore, more like around 3800 rpm, and that already made a huge difference.

But i just got home from a 12-hour garage session though. I swapped the stock ZF gearbox for a Getrag 240 from an E34 because the synchros were worn out. While I was at it, I also installed a slightly lighter flywheel (5.2 kg) together with the shifter from a Z3 2.9/3.0. That improved the driving feel massively - especially now I can do really crisp downshifts and immediately be back in the right rev range so the car actually pulls properly again.But yeah… B20 is still a B20. If I ever find a good B25 for a decent price, that thing is going in immediately.

I really need to turn off the push notifications for my saved searches in my Kleinanzeigen/marketplace app... drove forever again last week for an original rear spoiler, but at least at €100 it was a really good deal

Also gave the car a full 3-stage polish and ceramic coating.
Looked great, but since I don't have a garage and the coating still needs to cure, the car looks like crap right now. Curious how it'll look after the first wash
 


 

Next up is probably the dashboard since I was at a few meets again over the long weekends in May and was the only sucker with a cracked one every time. Plan is to fill the cracks and then wrap the whole dashboard in vinyl w/o seams. We'll see how that goes.

I stuck mine on the rear window slightly crooked and it drives me nuts. Happy to cover everything plus tip.
We originally planned to marry here in Germany with the E28 as the wedding car, but ended up switching to a wedding in the US last minute, so that never happened. At least the sticker keeps a bit of that connection on the car, this time on straight.

I gotta say, the e28 is quite a great RV, tho its lacking quite a bit power when going up the austrian alps fully loaded
