Re: 2020 Calendars Now Available!
Here we are, 15 days into the new year (how did that happen so quickly?
) and I'm pretty much sold out. I just got an order for two more (thanks, Brian in Los Gatos!), and realized that I'm down to the bottom of the box! In all the years I've done this calendar, I think this is the first time I've run out without resorting to discounting the price or giving away a bunch, so a HUGE shout-out to everybody who bought calendars, and again to everybody who contributed photos. You all make it worth the effort.
And a special thanks to those who pre-ordered calendars and to my silent corporate sponsor; placing a print order for 125 calendars isn't cheap, and having some of that cost fronted by you all makes a HUGE difference! Still it's a bit of a leap of faith. The calendars have never been a huge money maker for me; mostly I'm just happy to cover my costs, and what little profit I see from sales usually ends up getting spent on parts for my car. So my car thanks you all as well.
The 28th of this month will mark my 11th year as part of this august group of geeks. I don't post as much here as I once did, but still pop in and see what's new. But when it comes to this calendar project, you guys are my main resource, and my primary motivation. I was this close to just skipping the calendar this year, but got some much needed encouragement from a couple of people on mye28.com; you know who you are, so thanks!

Re: 2020 Calendars SOLD OUT!
Wait, you said "pretty much" sold out. Where I come from that means there's at least one left for a slacker such as myself. Right?

I second this after doug.doug wrote:Wait, you said "pretty much" sold out. Where I come from that means there's at least one left for a slacker such as myself. Right?
Re: 2020 Calendars SOLD OUT!
Yeah, it's sold out. I've got one copy on the wall at work (it's mine!) and a couple more that have already been promised to friends. So sold out.
Sorry fellas; ya snooze, ya lose.

Bummer. Will do better next year!
Re: 2020 Calendars SOLD OUT!
Great job on the calendar. I received before Xmas...
Re: 2020 Calendars SOLD OUT!
Out of curiosity and if you don't mind, how many calendar orders did you fill? I ask because it's an indicator of the size of the motivated E28 community.
Anybody care to estimate the number of E28 enthusiasts remaining? Are we talking dozens, hundreds, a few thousand?

Re: 2020 Calendars SOLD OUT!
Even though I kept pretty fastidious records, answering that is a little difficult. There were 125 calendars ordered and delivered to me. All but three were either sent out or sold/given locally. Some were sent out gratis to those who submitted photos that were used in the calendar, and two were lost in the mail (which was the first time that's happened in all the years I've done this.) In total, there were 56 paying customers; most of them purchased single calendars for their own use, and some purchased multiples, and had them sent to different locations.HayekFan wrote:Out of curiosity and if you don't mind, how many calendar orders did you fill? Most of the calendars ended up in the US, with several in Canada, several in the UK, several in Japan, a few in Australia, and one in Belgium. Most of the orders originated from mye28.com members, but a good number came from the ad I placed on the BMW e28 forum on Facebook.
Judging from the people I see here and on FB, I'd say the enthusiasts number in the hundreds. The "motivated e28 community", those who will splurge on things like calendars is a subset of the former, but still in the hundreds. For what it's worth, the number of calendars I've ordered has increased over time; I've ordered 125 for the last three years, but in years past I've had to resort to discounting the price and giving some away after the first of the year, but this year was the first time I actually sold out. I count that as a sign that the "motivated e28 community" is perhaps on the rise.HayekFan wrote:Anybody care to estimate the number of E28 enthusiasts remaining? Re: 2020 Calendars SOLD OUT!
Interesting -- thanks. Your estimates of the number of enthusiasts seem on target to me. Regarding this year's increase in calendar orders, it could just be noise but I notice it's happening at a time when E28 prices seem to be on the rise. For me it reinforces the notion that the cars are shifting from being just old cars to something more like classic or vintage (and therefore more special and calendar worthy). I recently faced the question of whether to paint my daily driver E28 or put the $$ into a more practical newer car. I went with paint but lots of people would have gone the other way. At this point we're probably pretty deep into the handoff from owners who mainly just want to drive these cars to ones who see them as worthy of restoration and increasingly serious maintenance effort. Every time that happens you gain an enthusiast who's more likely to be the motivated, calendar buying type.davintosh wrote:Even though I kept pretty fastidious records, answering that is a little difficult. Re: 2020 Calendars SOLD OUT!
Well, I, for one, wish to thank Dave once again for creating this beautiful E28 calendar!!
Being that it's April 1st, I got to feel proud of my little E28 as I flipped the calendar to the current month, which graces the month. As April is predicted to be a horrible month, at least here in the Big City, it's nice to be able to look over at the calendar in my kitchen and see my beautiful car, when I took it to Wyoming and Montana in 2019. Boy, am I glad I did my 51-day roadtrip in 2019...
I may keep it 420 all year long...
