It's aquarium filter foam. I got it at an actual aquarium shop, but it should be available online. I would still try to adapt a sanden before fixing this style compressor: https://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=157492


On the other hand, this would make a nice material for making filters for the firewall air intakes. Flows well, can keep the big chunks out and water won't affect it. It could even work at the evaporator intake to keep lint from stuffing the coils.
Thanks for the info, this could really help to keep our evaporators clean. I will keep it in mind while servicing my 325e air conditioning.
