The guilty party is Ford for not making a part, that doesn't enhance FOMOCO 's reputation. Automatic transmissions can be made to truly run forever. It isn't rocket surgery to overhaul them either. Or build a decent manual trans. It has been done. What is the problem? If you build a part that cannot even last the warranty, It never should have been considered as ready to be used. Every 30 yrs I buy a Ford to remind me why I dont like them. That said, the Rat and the 528e share some very similar parts. The purpose built Cologne 4.0 L V6 has some grunt. It is a 60' V and supposedly as smooth as an I6 The fuel injection bits would interchange.

I drove a 2017 Focus ST tonight. It was fine. Not buying it.

<shrug> Unless they were really, really early adopters, it's a Google search away. I love the design and the reviews about the new Alfa Romeo Giulia, but I know not to buy one because just a few months after launch, there are horror stories everywhere about overheating, random limp mode engagement, etc.

If someone bought an E65 and complained about maintenance costs, how much pity would you have? It sucks for someone who buys a lemon because they're getting the short end of the statistical stick. I feel less bad for someone who buys a product that is known to be shitty. And yes, ultimately the problem is Ford's terrible design, but it is a knowable thing.

I was so excited when Ford put a DSG in the Fiesta. I was so intrigued that I went and test drove one only to discover the transmission had no provisions whatsoever for manual gear selection. No paddles, no side gate on the gear selector, nothing. Not even as an option at any trim level. It drove ok enough, but that one oversight completely killed it for me.

I bought the e36 instead. I probably overpaid, but it had a fantastic service history and was well cared for. I wish I hadn't wrecked it, good or even decent e36 sedans are pretty tough to find now. My next car will likely be a wagon of some kind.

Sorry, but I'd have to agree with Adam on this. We are talking about a Fiesta, not a BMW, not a Giulia, and many buyers are not going to be that sophisticated to do the research. Most won't know what DSG is. They just know they don't have to shift and the car gets good gas mileage and is cheap. The majority of Fiesta buyers are not as "educated" as you...

Absolutfuckinglutely. They're not new tech. They were used in US WWII tanks. Semi's have been using them for decades, when was the last time you heard a garbage truck shift manually. Coping with power and longevity is not a problem, as long as it's designed for the use. 3HP/4HP22 trannys came out in the 70's and are better than most of the autos in rental cars I've driven. It's about real or perceived value. I bet there's more R and D just in the controls of todays climate controls (not that they work well IMO) than there is in A/Ts. They can build it as good as they want to. 150 torque rating, the engineers say the tranny is good for 155. Use it and most will be ok, some warranty repairs and most will go 100K in a 200K car. Build it to 225 foot pounds and the only time it'll break is if they drop shift it (which could be eliminated by software) or if they run it dry. But it'll cost another fifty bucks.
