I signed up for the plus 100 $99.99 per year plan, found a $10.00 off promo code in ten seconds... I'm still in business.

I am not disagreeing with the factual points in the article nor his take on on-line ads in general, but it was written by PB's major rival and it is a bit biased in its' tone.Adam W in MN wrote:https://finance.yahoo.com/news/big-less ... 26772.html
As such it's hard not to see it as a plug for their own product (without them actually mentioning it).

I'll bet you $10 the author of that article doesn't even know Yahoo! acquired Flickr.vinceg101 wrote:I am not disagreeing with the factual points in the article nor his take on on-line ads in general, but it was written by PB's major rival and it is a bit biased in its' tone.Adam W in MN wrote:https://finance.yahoo.com/news/big-less ... 26772.html

The fundamental problem here is Photobucket (and others like it) built their business models on selling ads. In other-words, the user of the service is the product, the advertisers are the customers. Because you (the user) are the product, they don't really care about you. For a period of time, advertisers were stupid enough to pay for Photobucket's customers.
FWIW, Flickr has never been ad supported. Flickr has never been profitable either. I actually have no idea how it hasn't been killed. I suspect Verizon will figure out a way to eff that up (or kill it because of the costs).
Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
Exactly. While there are many very benevolent people on the 'net, sharing their wisdom or expertise at their expense, it doesn't work as a business model. While I don't know who said it, the quote, If you're not paying for something, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold. while perhaps not an absolute has more than a little wisdom to it. It's great if it's free, but don't expect it to last forever. Now Pbucket seems to be a special case in holding pictures for ransom, nobody should be surprised they stopped hotlinking.cek wrote:

Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
Got my bucket email. I'll get all my pics and be done with them.
Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
I've been using imgur successfully on other forums without issue. I read the thread linked earlier that they delete their photos if not viewed, but after searching I could not find anything recent that supports this claim. I think if you register/login and then upload you'll be fine.
Also for post that you would like archived you can submit them to https://archive.org/web/ I haven't used this before but just read about it on another forum.

You appear to be right. The FAQ that Imgur used to have that read:camplo wrote:I've been using imgur successfully on other forums without issue. ...is no longer on their site. They have a new FAQ for Forum users: https://help.imgur.com/hc/en-us/article ... rum-Users-http://imgur.com/faq#long
"As long as images are getting at least 1 view every 6 months, they will stick around forever. After that, your image may be removed to create more space for newer images."
This seems to make it pretty clear they love us Forum users. However, I wonder how they plan on covering costs/making money? They, are after-all funded by investors and currently appear to have an advertising based model.
My previous reservations about Imgur seem void. For now. Cool.
However, at the same time, it's pretty clear who the product is for Imagr: Millennial Males:
http://www.imgurads.com/
Read that and you'll get real insight into the world of online advertising....Imgur is one of the largest, most concentrated and engaged communities of Millennial Males found anywhere on the Internet.
Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
Fuk photobucket. They can stick their $400/year fee up their collective arses.
I think I'm going to use postimage for now. I've already transferred all my bmw related pics on there. They don't have any stupid "view it or lose it" policy, their 3rd party linking isn't restrictive and for now at least it's free.

If this somehow fails, I'll just setup my own image hosting platform on my domain. Oh crap, I don't have a domain yet.

Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
This site could easily continue to be "ad free" with donations and support hosting that would provide unlimited storage. If the Admins here would like any suggestions I'd be glad to help. You would also have to add a mod to this program or migrate to a different program that already has an image upload feature. They all do. On top of that, new programs are responsive (mobile friendly) which is hard to do without these days.
There would have to be a commitment from the members to provide enough donations to make it work but it wouldn't be hard depending on the percentage of members that participate. You guys know your numbers and I can help with the hosting and program numbers, just let me know.

Get one. I pay less than a hundo a year for mine, with hosting and email service.demetk wrote:Oh crap, I don't have a domain yet.

That seems reasonable. What are you using? Does it include a web server that you can install pic hosting software?e28Sean wrote:Get one. I pay less than a hundo a year for mine, with hosting and email service.demetk wrote:Oh crap, I don't have a domain yet.
Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
I know it must be possible to host images on a site like this for very little money because I'm a member of another forum with a similarly active userbase that's been around since 2002, and for the last 5 years at least, integrated image hosting has been a thing on there. The images are just limited to 4000 x 4000 pixels, or 8 MB each. The site is supported mainly out of pocket by the owner, who is by no means a rich person, plus the occasional meager donations of some members.
Some may say forums are becoming a thing of the past, but I'd argue that image hosting sites are on the way out much faster... Internet real estate is much cheaper nowadays and with that analogy, it makes more sense to buy than rent.

Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
Not meaning to revive this thread from the dead, but I got this email from Flickr today and it was germane to this thread:
Flickr loves you
We’re excited to announce that Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers.
SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community. With SmugMug, we’ll continue to focus on you, the Flickr members who inspire us all with your work.
Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. You will still access Flickr with your current login credentials and you will have the same Flickr experience as you do now. We will continue to work to make your Flickr experience even better.
We think you are going to love Flickr under SmugMug ownership, but you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018.
If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy.
Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.
We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family.
Thanks,
The Flickr Team
Not sure what it means for all the current Flickr account holders and their embedded photos (if anything). I guess this answer's Charlie's question about how they are managing to stay in business (read: they're not).

And I'll gladly donate money to the effort. I have time as well, though I'm not sure that I have the technical chops to make anything happen.cek wrote:I will gladly donate time and money to get mye28.com to have a proper photo hosting solution.
Seriously, what would it take to "endow" photo hosting for a site like this?
Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
I say BS. When I received that email I promptly deleted my account.vinceg101 wrote:Flickr loves you
Re: FotoPhucket Phooey
I hadn't received an email about that, but I'm just a lowly free Flickr subscriber. As I read the FAQ on the acquisition, it sounded like the free accounts on Flickr will remain as they are for the foreseeable future; Flickr Pro accounts can be merged into SmugMug accounts if you choose to do so, but it doesn't sound like it's mandatory. I was curious about the free accounts, and it sounds like they will stick around.

But I suppose like any "free" service, they can pull the plug on it at any time. And like they say, with a service like Flickr, free account holders are not the company's clients, we are the product that they sell to their clients. What will happen to my Flickr account? What will happen to my Smugmug account?
Absolutely nothing. Flickr and SmugMug will continue to operate separately, just as both have been. Your SmugMug and Flickr accounts will remain separate and independent for the foreseeable future.
Both Flickr and SmugMug users will continue to log in with their current credentials and you will have the same experience you are used to. If things do change in the future for Flickr, we’ll be as transparent as possible about the process and give you as much notice as we can about the issues that will matter to you.
Will Flickr continue to offer a free version? Will Flickr’s price change?
Absolutely. Flickr’s free accounts are foundational to its community of influential and engaged photographers. We are not making any changes to Flickr plans or rates at this time. We’ll let Flickr Pro customers know if that changes.
