This BMW was imported by a friend of ours from overseas and since we processed the importation documents as well as the title work, it is being sold under the name of our company. This is a very close clone of an M5. In fact, it has the S38 M5 engine as well as a dogleg manual 5-speed transmission, M-Sport seats, sport Bilstein suspension and a complete Euro-spec M5 body kit. The only thing that gives it away is the BMW plaque in the engine bay that says 525iA. The good: The S38 motor feels strong and sounds great. According to the person that did the swap, it has less than 100k miles on it; same with the transmission. The clutch feels nice and strong; the suspension is also tight. The body is nice and straight although the car has been repainted at some point. The quality of the paint is good, and the car has very few imperfections on the body, but there are a couple of small flaws (see photos). The Euro bumpers and headlights make the car look great. The interior is very nice. The seats, dash, door panels and the headliner are clean and free of major flaws. The car has a complete new exhaust with a Borla muffler. It is loud and sounds mean. The car is rust free. It spent all its life in a hot climate. The instrument cluster was swapped from a US car and it works fine with all gauges and control lights. The bad: Although the previous owner was apparently happy with the conversion and the motor swap, in my opinion the work was not quite complete in some areas. There are some sensors that are not connected (oil level, washer fluid, coolant, etc), the AC was not connected either. Although the car runs and drives, under the hood looks a bit chaotic. A few light bulbs are burned. Some will consider this car a turnkey and some will say it needs more work. The car will be sold with a clean Florida title and it can be registered in most states without problems. If you live in CA, please check your state pollution requirements. PLEASE CALL US AT 904-755-5890 WITH ANY QUESTIONS.
I'd pay $2000 for it sight unseen.njharrell wrote:jbyang413 wrote:1987 E28 525i w/ a 3.6L S38 - eBay

Any thoughts on what this one might be worth??
Ha, wow that's less than i expected. Assuming it's as described you think its worth $10k? I called the dealer on this one and he's asking $17,500, he's selling it for a friend who paid $20k to import it thinking it was a legit M5. The dealer is a really up front and good guy, but i just don't see paying $17.5k for it just because the guy before me overpaid. Just curious what some other folks who are in the know might be willing to pay.cek wrote:

You asked what it was worth. Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.njharrell wrote:Ha, wow that's less than i expected. Assuming it's as described you think its worth $10k? condition: excellent
cylinders: 6 cylinders
drive: rwd
fuel: gas
odometer: 177300
paint color: white
size: full-size
title status: clean
transmission: automatic
1987 BMW 535 IS
177k miles, AT, AC (works well)
Alpine White (really good) Nearly rust-free. California car. Garaged.
Recently re-conditioned steel-blue leather interior. Dashboard, leather, headliner, carpet near-perfect.
Rare 3-piece, 16"-BBS wheels.
Pampered since 1995 (my tenure) -- all repairs, maintenance and upgrades performed by expert mechanic (German Autocare of San Ramon, Ca.): new(ish) radiator, brakes, rear springs/shocks, various suspension parts -- bushings, bearings, belts and hoses.
Reinforced steering rack and AC bracketry (welded top and bottom).
Replaced PCBs behind dash.
Synthetic fluids -- engine, trans, differential.
Perfect 160psi engine compression across all 6-bores.
All controls function (except infamous-headrest mechanism).
Alpine stereo and 5CD changer (fine audio).
Good Yokohama tires, good HD (Delco) battery.
Near-perfectly intact, original tool kit and knock-off wrench. Clean boot. Manuals, Receipts, logbook.
I have had no major problems in 22 years of ownership and expect none in the future.
Recent Smog PASS (HC -- 0 ppm, CO - .04%, NO -- 400 ppm).
This is a really nice car, a classic (my wife's actually), and it needs to go to one who will appreciate and care for it well. This car hasn't been modified or hot-rodded or messed-with and has a long life ahead of it if properly cared for. . . It loves to run on Ca.I5 between SF and LA running brilliantly 85-90mph returning 20mpg (running 70/75mph will net 25mpg). It's comfortable, quiet, smooth, solid -- no squeaks, rattles, wind noise, perfect steering feel.
I have numerous photos (See - http://gglotus.org/MelsBMW/ ) and happy to take more of your choosing on request.
I live in the SF Bay Area, 30-mi east of Oakland.
Offered price is $9,350 obo
(I've recently spent $3000 on maintenance and in restoring the leather seats. The 3-pcs BBS wheels are special and are in excellent condition, easily worth $2k on their own. The mostly original paint is quite excellent -- not a crappy re-spray. Inspections are welcome).

What day? I may be in town.mrheatherroth wrote:I'm driving up next weekend to take look at that one, please no one steal it from me lol. The interior has been reupholstered though, I if any one wants more info about this let me know I'm in contact with the seller.
If it's fake it fooled me. Could be a wife writing an ad about her late husband's car, whom she killed for having an affair with the sister's, stepsister's girlfriend. And since she's mainly into mid century tapestries, she has no clue what Alpina means so she googled it.az533 wrote:Figured I'd put this E34 alpina B10 turbo out there, though it looks like a fake, with a wikipedia description and zero specifics:

EXTERIOR
Finished in beautiful and striking Henna Red, (Hennarot, Code 052), the glorious paintwork boasts a deep vibrant shine and uniform finish. All panels are beautifully preserved, as is the underside having benefitted from Ziebart treatment when new. A tiny ding to the boot lid is visible upon close scrutiny. The distinguished and unique Alpina body accessories, badges and stickers are fully intact and exactly as intended. Discreet in comparison to the more common bold Alpina decals, this example features a broad gold side stripe and matching pin stripe in excellent order. Supplying BMW dealer branded plates remain fitted. This very rare car is certain to delight the BMW Connoisseur.
INTERIOR
The driver-oriented ergonomically designed interior showcases exemplary craftsmanship. The cloth upholstery optional sports seats trimmed in Pearl Beige cloth, (Code 0158), are in superb order and are a testament to the fastidious ownership and very low mileage this example has enjoyed. A minuscule and very faint mark to the driver’s seat base is visible. The immaculate driver inclined dashboard proudly displays the Alpina Dash Board Plaque reminding the driver of engineering excellence. Additional Alpina features include the badged leather steering wheel and gearknob as well as the logo instruments. A complete toolkit with fuses and bulbs still in the foam holder is housed inside the boot lid, and the original jack, wheel brace and full first aid kit remain in the boot area. Even the genuine optional BMW boot tidy tray has been retained! The dealer fitted Sansui Acoustic Research Stereo and graphic equaliser are a delight to see! Two sets of tailored BMW carpet and rubber floor mats have preserved the original carpet beautifully. An exceptional classic BMW interior.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The standard M30 528i straight six cylinder engine was upgraded as part of the conversion with the Alpina B9 type exhaust system, and the power output measured an impressive 192bhp at 5800rpm. Alpina springs and Bilstein gas dampers were further advancements from the standard 528i specification. The engine bay is spotless and displays all factory stickers, plates and stampings, as well as identification plates for easy inspection. The standard five speed Getrag 260 overdrive gearbox is a joy to operate and the factory optional limited slip differential has regular documented oil changes in the history file to ensure optimum operation. The ultimate driving machine.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Specially developed light weight Alpina 16in rims are shod in matching and correct Goodyear Eagle F1 205/55 ZR16 tyres up front and 225/50 R16 tyres at the rear with masses of tread remaining. Only faints markings are visible and the black centre infills are as intended. The brakes incorporate 285mm discs all round, ventilated to front, to enable straight and steady stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
This exceptional example, one of only four of the remaining cars known to theALPINAregister.com, (Click here for details), has covered just 29,643 miles from new under dedicated enthusiast ownership. Built in September 1984, this example is one of the last Henna Red E28 cars to be produced prior to the introduction of Zinnober Red. First registered on 16th October 1984 by BMW Main Dealers, Almondbury Garage Ltd of Huddersfield, the Alpina B2.8 conversion carried out when new was done to correct Buchloe specification, Buchloe being the town and headquarters of Alpina in Bavaria. The genuine and exceptionally low mileage of 29,643 miles is verified in the comprehensive history file. The original BMW service record displays 15 stamps, the first six being the supplying dealer and specialists thereon, and the most recent entry being Main Dealer Sycamore BMW of Peterborough in February 2017. Even the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) sheet has been retained! The dealer supplied plastic clip wallet contains all handbooks, guides, stereo instructions and dealer staff business cards. The history file further consists of a larger folder containing many specialist invoices, receipts and MOT certificates to absolutely verify the low mileage covered. Two remote keys and a third spare are in addition to the original leather BMW key pouch holding the master and key code tag.
This example is certain to delight the classic BMW aficionado appreciative of the Alpina marque, seeking an unmolested and very rare showpiece.
MOT February 2018, HPI Clear.
