Sprawling fields of contraband - VW diesels

I am very unhappy with VW about ruining the reputation of the diesel (again, after GM did it decades ago). I'm convinced the diesel is the best engine for efficient long distance cruising, with the strong torque characteristics. Now, we have only the Chevy Cruze and Mazda (when it is available for the Chevy and if it ever gets here for the Mazda) when it comes to affordable cars.
