Time to catch up on a few weeks worth of work.
Bodywise. Remove a few more bits on the road to prepping it to be painted. Takes a FED to come up with the idea of these sidelights. What a PITA to take them off.
Engine progress.
I decided to put the first coat on while the head & pan were still attached. Once those are removed, I'll go back for a second coat.
Removed the valve cover and head. The cam, rockers, etc., were in great shape. It will still go to the machine shop to be it hot tanked and pressure checked. I'll probably go forward with replacing the rockers, springs, valve and guides.
With the head off, I got a closer look at the cylinders and piston heads. Moisture is from my earlier cleaning. Looks nasty now but will clean up nicely.

Chain guides and rails. Yep, all those will be replaced.
Last task was to remove the oil pan. Did not find any metal shavings or contamination.

Minimal traces of sludge so I'm happy.
