If you can't visualize where every piece went it is easier to leave them together, I happen to be a medical marvel and easily put things back together.
Re: New addition to the fleet
You should take them apart, don't listen to people that know more than you.

exhaust is "Stromung exhaust.
Re: New addition to the fleet
Doesn't look like it to me. The tips are similar but they weren't the only ones to use those.
Re: New addition to the fleet
That makes sense. Thanks for 'splaining. I took tons of pics. One reason I wanted to pull them apart now is I want to get a bunch of the fasteners plated with a mondo plating run in planning.bkbimmer wrote:If you can't visualize where every piece went it is easier to leave them together, I happen to be a medical marvel and easily put things back together.
They need to come completely apart anyway, I figured the pics will help reassembly.

Wish I could multi quote without opening another page and copy/pasting from the phone, but this page reads a little like "There's a Monster At The End of This Book" (to me).

That was a pretty cool car!
Looks like no intercooler on this one, thanks.

Re: New addition to the fleet
@plndr and @joel323 came by today to grab some parts. I put them to work.

We got the entire interior stripped, except for the steering column and pedals. Those will come out once I don't need to move the car anymore.

Collected tons of great parts, including the late-model beige carpet set. I'll be posting it in my FS thread asap. It's un-cut and un-torn. It should clean up nicely.

I'm taking all the wiring...I don't know what I need for the blue car, so I might as well have an extra set of everything. So far I've not cut a single OE wire in doing this. Getting the main harness through the firewall looks tricky. We were debating whether it will pull through from the inside or if you need to dismantle the fusebox. Anyone know? It seems odd that they would assemble the fuse box after the wiring was in the car...
The engine is ready to be pulled too. That will likely happen next weekend.

Pulling apart a car like this is really great experience. With the white 528e i parted I didn't really touch the interior because it was so full of mold and disgusting. But knowing how all this stuff attaches and connects will help immensely further down the road.

Moar fun as a dismantler today.

It's pretty clear that you can't get the harness out until the motor's out of the way. Good to know.

Never seen a picture of the inside of the roof? Either had it. Now you have too.

Not gonna be selling a whole 5-speed swap kit with this car, but I will be adding this to my for sale thread.

Then I started pulling the transmission. And wouldn't you know it? One of the upper bolts snapped. Half the head. Sigh. 6 one way, half-dozen another in pulling engine/tranny together or separately, but sucks that I've now done most of the work one way only to have to do it the other way any how.

Re: New addition to the fleet
Finished up everything that could be pulled from underneath and rolled the car out to pull the engine...

The sawzall definitely made the job easier.

This motor should make someone very happy. Still not sure how much I should ask for it. I'm assuming I'm better off selling it whole versus pulling the turbo stuff off and selling separately?

But, this really sucks. Torx bolt (lower starter hole) head sheared off. And, as happens 73.25% of the time when you attempt to use an easy-out the easy-out broke off too. Now I'm stumped.

What's the recipe for getting these bolts out now? I know I'm not the first one to have to deal with this.

Re: New addition to the fleet
Do you own a drill? Or a spinny-cutty dealie? Just need to get the head out of the way to pull the tranny and then you can use a vise-grip or similar.
Re: New addition to the fleet
Problem is the super-hard carbide easy-off is now in there and none of my drill bits seem to be able to cut through it.wkohler wrote:Do you own a drill? Or a spinny-cutty dealie? Just need to get the head out of the way to pull the tranny and then you can use a vise-grip or similar.
Re: New addition to the fleet
That's where the spinny-cutty dealie comes in handy. For that spot, I'd go with a Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel. That spot is too tight for anything bigger. Like Chris said, just cut the head off, pull the trans, then use a ViseGrip to get the rest of the bolt out of the block. Re: New addition to the fleet
Somehow it decided not to rain here today. I was able to wrench almost all day and got almost everything off the car. All that's left is the rear suspension and the ABS system (which is one of the things I really wanted from this car).

Nope, not BBK. I suppose someone will want these, regardless.

Anyone tell what kind of shocks these are?

Re: New addition to the fleet
With the boot color and zinc retaining nut, I'd say Bilstein of some sort.
Re: New addition to the fleet
Bilsteins are the only shocks that look like that. Pretty sure they're Bilstein Sports and Eibach springs if I remember correctly. I think they used to belong to ldsbeaker before he traded them to the PO of the car that was the parts car for your car for the Ground Control setup that was on that car back in 2009.
Re: New addition to the fleet
It's a crying shame that car ended up how it did. The PO obviously sunk a lot of $ in it, and did it correctly. I doubt they got their money's worth. Charley, you should have driven that one with a manner of "nofuxgiven". Glad to see it stripped to the bone at least, it will live on.

Re: New addition to the fleet
The body panel "Cover Panel" part number 41.11.1.881.422 is still available from the main stealers and I believe only comes with the ABS Pump brackets.
Ordered one for my 525e last week for £23.52 (US$35 ish) here in the UK.
Intend to retrofit ABS to my Bronzitbeige Eta during the body restoration so the brackets on the replacement "Cover Panel" will be most welcome.
Regards,
Mick

Re: New addition to the fleet
I figured this panel was still available and reasonably priced because the battery tray is as well (bought one last year). We'll see which route I go once we get down to brass tax on the build.Ordnator wrote:The body panel "Cover Panel" part number 41.11.1.881.422 is still available from the main stealers and I believe only comes with the ABS Pump brackets.

Re: New addition to the fleet
Picked up the cover today complete with ABS brackets.
I was also after a new battery tray but they are now out of stock and declared "No Longer Available".
I have seen this a lot in the last couple of years, once stock is exhausted now it is not made NLA.
It is becoming more and more challenging to keep E28's in good condition.

Really? I got over $100 for mine.cek wrote:Got $12.50 in scrap value.
Re: New addition to the fleet
That's about right. Scrap prices are in the $hitter. I scrapped a Mk3 Volkswagen Jetta shell this summer and got $16 for it - scrap is $30/gross ton. Last year, when I scrapped an E28 shell it was $160/gross ton.
