How about Mason Williams & Classical Gas? I'd forgotten that one until I stumbled across a recording on the 'Tube tonight.

I know there's not a lot of love around here for music with a twang to it, but even so, Chet Atkins deserves some credit. The album he did with Les Paul -- Guitar Monsters -- is pretty fun to listen to.

Dave, don't get me wrong, I love JB adn think he has all the talent in the world.
But when I listen to him play, I just find it missing something, and I can only attribute that to a lack of deep down understanding.
Think back to when blues was young, and think about the situation those young black men were in.
Blues was born of suffering, and if you haven't really suffered, it's hard to actually 'master' it.
Maybe he needs ot head down to the crossroads, fall down on his knees, and ask the devil for some suffering.

OK. So I never paid much attention to Bonamassa. Tonight, I am channel surfing and on PBS there is a special "Jon Bonamassa - Muddywolf at Red Rock". I watched it for a while. A fine player but I now know what you mean. No blues in that heart. Anyone who knows anything about Muddy Waters or Howling Wolf knows that they hated each other. To shorten their names to Muddywolf and perform a tribute at Red Rock rather than one of the great blues venues in Chicago certainly means he does not get it. Seemed like one long boring "look at me" guitar solo instead of a tribute to the bluesmen whose names he coopted. Hope PBS makes a bunch of money from it.

Nah, just YouTube. Poke around for guitar solos long enough (I've been doing it for days now; since April 21 to be exact ) and his name pops up. He made appearances on other shows as well; The Odd Couple was one of them that involved guitar work, but he also showed off with the violin on that one too (since you're from Down South, you might know that as the fiddle. )

Here's one of my recent favorites with the incomparable Tom Morello (from Rage Against the Machine) with Jim James also tearing it up in this duo of an awesome Springsteen song that was originally done by the Boss in more of a folk style, but this version is rocked up big time. Be patient... it starts out slow and builds, but wait until the ending...it'll blow you away! Crank it up!!!

That was damn good stuff. I love how Springsteen looks almost skeptical at first but clearly loves it by the end. I've come around on Jim James, I used to find him exhausting, but I've realized he's got a deep love and respect for music and it comes out in his stuff.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this one the other day. The White stripes from under blackpool lights. Probably my all time favorite live performance. If you can watch the whole concert it's something like 2 hours of Jack White just tearing shit up.

Chet Atkins was a serious player. Everyone who spends time at Darins house ends up watching some Hee Haw, and while you have to supress plenty of groans, you can watch his fingers dance over a guitar or banjo, and realize he is no joke.

Eric Johnson's 'Cliffs of Dover' is a serious bit of guitar playing, but I prefer Steves Boogie.

I've always felt that guys like Clapton are only allowed to continue living becasue he's had so much suffering in his life, his flame while bright has been tempered and nearly blown out numerous times, vs. guys like Jimi or Robert Johnson who were like a solar flare, then were gone.

Thanks for mentioning him Davintosh! Probably the most talented guitarist to live even if his music has not been mainstream.

Then I'm with Jeremy that the solo usually has to be part of a something else for me to really like it. And for that my all time favorite has got to be Steve Lukather who has been the studio guitar on so many many things I really liked. Not sure he was mentioned yet and no way to single out but most of the best were with Toto.

Then another one just for fun, Joe Walsh. Songs like Life's Been Good are just fun to listen to.

I don't understand how every song Dire Straits did was great - and I mean every song. There wasn't an album that you skip a track on. Even when I wanted to skip half of "On Every Street," it ended up being great. Even the ExtendedancEplay EP. Then somehow all of the Mark Knopfler solo stuff is just kinda meh.

Times like this when I wish I had headphones. There's a lot to digest in here. I'm too mainstream in my music appreciation to suggest anything, but I'll definitely go along with SRV, Clapton, Johnson, Hendrix, etc.
I clearly need to 'get out more' when it comes to music. I love it, I just don't have the time.
