E39s have them too which is where I'm used to them. Lets them put it under the back seat and give a bigger trunk, a good thing IMO. Not as big as an E28 which does have it in the trunk, but there wouldn't be room for anything if it was trunk mounted.

Most new cars use saddle tanks forward of the rear axle. The real benefits are crash safety and maintaining handling balance as the fuel burns off.

Glad you made it home fine. But holy crap two level senders? And that fuel pump looks like it could be replaced with a simple Walbro or TRE pump. Did you get to keep the old parts.

Not necessarily, being a split tank, it incorporates an odd syphon suction device into the assembly to suck fuel out of the other tank. So it would have to be a pretty good fit more than just functionally.

Wow a split tank. I've been out of the new car world for so long I didn't notice BMW needed to split a gas tank. To make your X5 really unique install the tank selector out of a Piper Cherokee on the driver's door panel and a Walbro pump in each tank. It would dead on reliable then plus you could impress your friends by being able to select your tank.

New car... It was built in 08/2001, so compared to the e28 it's newer, but...

I've done more than my share of Monday morning quarterbacking on this deal; if it had happened at home I would've done things much differently (likely with something other than the original configuration; thought about an aftermarket pump on the old assembly), but with the situation as it was, I didn't have many options. It's back in action, it got us home, and that's the important thing.

FWIW, I've heard some good things about the Romanian eBay guy selling the BMW USB OBD Diagnostic cable INPA Ediabas Ncs Expert DIS v57 SSS v32 GT1 Progman, and I have a spare XP laptop sitting around, so I think I'll pull the trigger on that for reading/resetting codes and maybe some feature coding. I thought about getting one of the WiFi or Bluetooth ODB2 interfaces so I could use Rev or Torque on my iPhone, but the software solution seems like it would be more useful, and far more useful than one of the single-trick code readers.

FWIW, I've heard some good things about the Romanian eBay guy selling the BMW USB OBD Diagnostic cable INPA Ediabas Ncs Expert DIS v57 SSS v32 GT1 Progman, and I have a spare XP laptop sitting around, so I think I'll pull the trigger on that for reading/resetting codes and maybe some feature coding. I thought about getting one of the WiFi or Bluetooth ODB2 interfaces so I could use Rev or Torque on my iPhone, but the software solution seems like it would be more useful, and far more useful than one of the single-trick code readers.

That's a solution that has been talked about a lot on Xoutpost.com; many people very happy with the results. Another option is a guy in the NY/NJ area who does remote coding; https://www.facebook.com/Tripl3OCoding . People have been really happy with his work. But I figure you'll probably go with the DIY solution.

This is awesome to hear. Last I reasearched I needed a GT1 on a laptop or that expensive yellow box to code the car and read factory diagnosis.

Mind you the car hasn't been driven since December 2012. This will help when I do my timing chain rebuild on the 540i... I can clear the codes and make sure everything works 100%. I can also properly bleed the brakes and pulse the ABS module. WIN!
